CASAGRAS Goal

CASAGRASCoordination And Support Actionfor Global RFID-related Activities and Standardisation

With particular reference to the Internet of ThingsGoal of CASAGRAS has focused on understanding the nature and requirements for the Internet of Things• How it is defined• How it relates to objects and interfacing with the Physical world• How it aligns with developments in the Internet• The nature of the supporting infrastructure and architecture• The various dimensions of consideration for applications• The various dimensions of international cooperation required

CASAGRAS – Making sense of the concept!

A Global concept requiring Global cooperation

CASAGRAS working with

European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)

Supply Chain Innovation Centre (Hong Kong, China)

YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory (Japan)

Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI, Korea)

FEIG Electronics GmbH (Germany)

QED (USA – company specialising in international standardisation)

AIM (UK) and European Centre for AIDC

Also collaborating with GRIFS (Global RFID Interoperability Forum for Standards, EPoSS (European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration and a number of sub-contractors)

CASAGRAS work packages

1. Standards and Procedures for International Standardisation in relation to RFID, including applications and conformance standards

2. Regulatory issues in respect of RFID standards

3. Global coding systems in relation to RFID standards

4. RFID in relation to Ubiquitous Computing and Networks

5. Functional, including sensory, developments in RFID and Associated Standards

6. Areas of Application, existing and future, and associated Standards

7. Socio-economic components of RFID Usage

Emphasis on work packages 3-6

Internet of Things in 2020 – declares that the definition of Internet of Things “has still some fuzziness” – “Things having identities and virtual personalities operating in smart spaces using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social, environmental and user contexts” - Functionality & Identity focus

“Interconnected objects having an active role in what might be called the Future Internet”- Seamless integration

“A world-wide network of interconnected objects uniquely addressable, based on standard communication protocols” – Semantic

Caveat lector – Let the reader beware – beware too the hype

CASAGRAS Definition

CASAGRAS Meeting – 1st December 2008 – Shanghai

Internet of Things – CASAGRAS Definition

A global network infrastructure, linking physical and virtual objects through the exploitation of data capture and communication capabilities. This infrastructure includes existing and evolving Internet and network developments. It will offer specific object-identification, sensor and connection capability as the basis for the development of independent federated services and applications. These will be characterised by a high degree of autonomous data capture, transfer event network connectivity and interoperability.

CASAGRAS Meeting – 1st December – Shanghai

Internet of Things – CASAGRAS Vision statement

A world where things can automatically communicate to computers and each other providing services for the benefits of human kind.

1. Based upon a profound understanding of object space

2. Embracing a fully inclusive range of ‘edge’ technologies

3. Tackling the global coding problem and linking with IP

4. Exploiting existing and evolving communications and mobility structures

5. Exploiting developments in computing and network ubiquity

6. Integration with the evolving Internet – Web2 and the Semantic web

7. Service oriented architecture and the applications’ space

8. Recognising the need for appropriate Governance

CASAGRAS Inclusive Model

1. Based upon a profound understanding of object space and networking potential – impacts upon architectural and functional needs:

How and why objects should be grouped and networked

Object grouping as a basis for applications and services

Basis for business, object-based processes Object-connectivity and data transfer

considerations

CASAGRAS Inclusive Model

2. Embracing a fully inclusive range of ‘edge’ technologies, including RFID, for interfacing with the physical world:

Need for migration strategy

Smart Cards

Bar Code

NFC

2D Codes

RTLS

GPS

Sensors

3. Exploiting UIID, URI and object identifier and name space resolver considerations in tackling global coding:

Unique Item

Identifier(UII)

Discovery Services

Object Space Identifiers

Data carrier ID + data payload and cost considerations

4. Exploiting existing and evolving communications and mobility structures:

Wireless platforms for sensor systems and mobility

Personal, local, metropolitan and extended wireless networks

5. Exploiting developments in computing and network ubiquity, particularly with respect to:

Embedded processing and communication platforms Intelligent processing ‘Intelligent’ sensors and sensor networks Heterogeneous network integration

CASAGRAS Inclusive Model

6. Integration with the evolving Internet – Web2 and the Semantic web

Exploiting the Internet protocol (IP) and the use of IPv6 – established, stable, highly scalable communication technology

Accommodating edge technologies since IP is not able to completely accommodate such needs directly (see 3)

Prospect of new domains (wow.) and associated service support structures and service oriented architecture (SOA)

CASAGRAS Inclusive Model

7. Service oriented architecture and the applications’ space:

Exploiting developments in service oriented architecture (SOA)

Exploiting the capability of ‘Internet’ connectivity and reach in in services and applications, eg:

Exploiting developments in object-connected ICT and opportunities for multiple identification and network supported functionality in business processes (Extended Process Functionality)

CASAGRAS Inclusive Model

8. Governance, security and socio-economic factors:

Central – De-central debate

Revenue models

Registration and control

Integration & Internet

Security, safety, domestic and public interaction, waste and the environment

Object-associated personal privacy issues

And there is of course Standards, Standards and Standards!
