The United States Navy began using the island in 1942 during World War II. It is 2012, and the Navy is ready to leave. Parts of the Navy area are bombed out, and other parts are relatively pristine.

Indigenous Doma (ID)

Although technically in the US Navy area, these people live in this remnant of their ancestral homeland. ID’s representative:

Doma in Exile (DIE)

This group of Doma consists of descendents of indigenous Doma who emigrated from Isla Nena to New York City in 1910. The DIE wish to return to Isla Nena now that the US Navy is leaving. DIE’s representative:

Isla Nena: European-Descended Residents (EDR)

Of mostly Spanish descent from the 16th century, these people live in the Civilian Area. EDR’s representative:

Amigos de la Isla Nena (Amigos)

This grassroots activist group dedicated to environmental and social justice is based in Isabel II and for many years campaigned to rid the island of the US Navy. Amigos’ representative:

Pests of Pests (POP)

This Canadian (Toronto) corporation produces pesticides. With the permission of the US Navy, POP tested pesticides in some undisclosed locations in the US Navy area from 1965 to 1985. There is speculation that these locations are still polluted today. POP’s representative:

Biodiversity Action Network (BAN)

This United States (Seattle) based environmental group is campaigning to make the US Navy area into a biodiversity reserve. BAN’s representatives:

Best at Tourism (BAT)

This United States (Los Angeles) based group of developers is seeking to develop a number of premier tourist getaway resorts on Isla Nena. BAT’s representatives:

Liberating Earth’s Free Trade (LEFT)

This multinational corporation (Chicago, London, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur) is seeking to provide start-up resources to create a free-trade zone for clothing and sports equipment production on Isla Nena. LEFT’s representative:

This environmental justice network group is trying to assist Amigos de la Isla Nena and mediate between this group, BAN, and others. Greenpeace’s representative:

Isla Nena: US Navy (USN)

President Barak Obama has authorized the United States Navy (USN) to make the final decision about the fate of Isla Nena. The fate of BAN’s, BAT’s, LEFT’s, Amigos’, and Greenpeace’s proposals, as well as the fate of the Doma, the DIE, and the EDR people, as well as the culpability of POP, all rest with these two USN admirals (not pictured in uniform):
