First Light Shelter For Homeless Women and Children
DID YOU KNOW that the Cathedral of St. Paul is one of the founding churches of First Light Shelter and has been providing dinner and overnight volunteers since it first opened in 1983? We currently have over 60 people who serve for one week every two months throughout the year, but are always in need of more! Please consider joining an evening meal team or our group of trained over-night volunteers! Our upcoming weeks to serve are Dec. 8-14, Feb. 9-15, Apr. 12-18, and June 14-20. LENTEN FASTING AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Pregnant women and others for whom fasting would be perilous to their health are exempted. Those fast-ing are permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning absti-nence from meat are binding for all from age 14 onwards. Broths made from meat (as long as there are no pieces of meat in it) are permissible according to the letter of the law, though perhaps not fully coherent with its spirit. Vegetarians do well on days of absti-nence to give up a certain food or dish that they regularly enjoy, since they already give up meat, not for penitential reasons, but as a way of life.

Why Lent? Our lives are busy. We often are focused on ourselves, our wants, our feelings, hopes,
amusements, disappointments, and complaints. These are not necessarily bad things, but they do distract us from
the “big questions”: What is the truth about ourselves and the world? What are our sins and what can we do about
them? What about the Four Last Things (Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell)? We need to remove the distractions –
not for a few minutes or even for a day or two. The forty days of Lent are an invitation to “go to the desert” as Jesus
did before he began his earthly ministry. Lent can be a privileged time of reflection on these big questions – a time of
prayer, sacrifice, and alms-giving – in which we can find forgiveness, healing, hope, and stronger faith. Like an athlete
in training, we can become more spiritually fit so that we can fully experience and enjoy the great Feast of Easter.
How does that happen? Through prayer, sacrifice, and the disciplines of the Church, we can have a holy
season of penance, a Holy Lent. We receive forgiveness of our sins; we gain honesty about the pride that fuels sin-
full-ness – the willfulness, the self-centeredness that wants it all “my way.” We can find reconciliation, healing our
individual brokenness and broken relationships with God and other people. Spiritually renewed, we can respond not
from fear of losing what we have or not gaining what we want, but rather from unconditional faith.
How do we do it well? The tried and true formula is prayer, fasting, and giving alms. Through
this series, we hope to provide you with reminders and perhaps some new ideas of how to have a Holy
Lent. As some ideas, consider:
• Prayer in the setting of “Lectio Divina,” reading first the Gospel or other Scripture of the day, from
Magnificat, Laudate, or the website of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, then reflecting for some time
on that story and your place in it, asking God to open your heart and mind. End with a resolution of how to
put what you receive into action in your life. (For more detail, see Into the Deep by our fellow parishioner
Dan Burke.) Go to daily Mass. Every Friday afternoon during Lent, consider attending Stations of the Cross
at St. Paul’s, as we pray and reflect together. Pray for and write our seminarians.
• Fasting as a sacrifice of some comfort, convenience, or pleasure in order to join the sufferings of Christ and
to be reminded of our own mortality. This year, let it be more than chocolate!
• Giving alms, which can mean making additional financial contributions to the Church, to the poor, or to
other purposes. It also can mean donating your time and talent. Could you help the Altar Sodality, the
Fraternity Poor of Jesus Christ Friars and Sisters or another apostolate? How about helping with RCIA meals
or the reception? Is it time to join the Knights of Columbus in order to serve your parish and community?

What are we about to do? After Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”), when we celebrate for one last time with a
party, maybe a pancake supper, or even a parade, we move to Ash Wednesday, the official start of Lent.
Why Ashes? From ancient times, placing ashes on the head has been the sign of a penitent sinner seeking
forgiveness. We read of putting on sackcloth and ashes in the books of the Old Testament, and Jesus refers to it (Mt
11:21). In the early centuries of the Church, ashes continued to be a sign of penitence. On Ash Wednesday the ashes
are the residue of the burned branches from last year’s Palm Sunday, a powerful reminder of fickle, changeable
human behavior. We can identify with the people who cried “Hosanna to the Son of David!” one day, and then
“Crucify Him!” a few days later. In addition to penance, the words of the priest remind us that we are mortal, that we
are but dust, “and to dust you shall return.”
What positive practices this Lent?
Consider:
Rising earlier to have adequate time for Bible
study, spiritual reading, and prayer.
Praying through the day (The Daily Office, the
Angelus at Noon, for example).
Reading lives of the Saints or other great spiritual
works.
Attending Daily Mass.
Stations of the Cross every Friday of Lent.
Deeper Examination of Conscience and the
Sacrament of Confession
Praying Daily Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Visiting a hospital or nursing home.
Working with the Friars Poor of Jesus Christ,
Catholic Charities, Firehouse Shelter, or others.
