TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Chris-tians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctu-ary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were en-couraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contem-plation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been ob-scured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

FOOD FOR THE SICK If you are interested in preparing food for parishioners in need, please call Susan Hanna at 337-5745.

From Father Robert’s Desk - Dear Brothers and Sisters: We have great news! And in times like ours, great news is always worth sharing! As you know, the Knights of Columbus hosted their 12th Annual Angelo Lucchesi Dinner on July 26 of this year at St. Benedict High School Cafeteria. I am writing this letter to share with you the incredible success of this fundraiser for the Formation of our Seminari-ans. More than sixty seven thousand dollars were raised, breaking many records, and more than doubling the amount of money raised in previous years! This success is the fruit of the effort and commitment of our Knights to the cause of the future of our Church, and the enthusiastic promotion and participation of our priests, religious, and the diocesan faithful. I would like to express my most sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Knights of Columbus Councils for all the effort, time, plan-ning, and commitment towards the Annual Angelo Lucchesi Seminarian Dinner. The funds we get each year from this event are an invaluable blessing that helps us provide our seminarians with the means to get the most out of their academic and spiritual forma-tion. I also want to thank and congratulate all the organizations and individuals who contributed to this event and made such a success possible: all the Knights of Columbus Councils; the Serra Club of Memphis; the staff of Saint Benedict High School; the caterers and volunteers; the people who donated items for the auction; the auctioneer; and the many wonderful people who attended the dinner. Your investment of life, talent, and treasure towards the formation of our future priests will surely be a pleasing offering to our Lord. Please share this letter with your parishioners, friends, and neighbors. May God bless all our efforts with an abundance of vocations to tend to His growing Church in West Tennessee. In Christ,

Rev. Robert Szczechura Director of Vocations Diocese of Memphis

DR. ALVEDA KING – CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST - COMING TO ST. AUGUSTINE CHURCH, SEPT. 14, 2019. Abortion is the leading cause of death in the United States. Not only that, but in Memphis and the rest of the country, abortion is disproportionately killing African American babies. The poor, the marginalized, and minorities are entering the doors of Planned Parenthood in Memphis to abort their children. It is time to wake Memphis up, and specifically the Church, to the fact that abortion is now the greatest civil rights issue facing the United States today. A group of Catholic Memphis Cursillistas and the Memphis Coalition for Life is excited to announce that evangelist Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is coming to Memphis to address the public on this very topic! As the Executive Director of Civil Rights for the Unborn, Dr. King will inspire Christians from all denominations to get involved in the fight to end the atrocity of abortion in Memphis and to save lives from abortion. The free talk and luncheon will be held on Sat. Sept. 14 at 10 AM to 1 PM at St. Augustine Church, 1169 Kerr Avenue, Memphis, TN 38106 and is open to the public.

Scheduling Events at the Church

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space to-gether. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calen-dar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will communicate by email with angie.oneill @nativity.cdom.org for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calendar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
