TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Or-leans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother supe-rior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relo-cated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or

events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

Third Thursday - August 16th From 5:00pm to 7:00pm

From the Desk of Father Robert Dear Nativity Parishioners, With great joy, I would like to inform you that we have chosen a new director to lead the music ministry at Nativity. Kyung-Won On comes to Nativity with excitement and anticipation. With a BA and MM in Organ Performance, “KW” has spent most of her professional life as a church organist and choir director, serving churches in Indiana, the D.C. area, and NW Arkansas. She lives in Cordova with her husband, Art Fogartie – an ordained Presbyterian minister who is the Stewardship Pastor at Hope Church – and their three dogs. I'm looking forward to working with her, and I hope you will join me in welcoming her when she begins her ministry with us on August 13. Thank you and God bless you, Fr. Robert

Altar Servers All children in 3rd grade or higher and all adults are encouraged to participate in the liturgy. Please call the Church office 901-382-2504, leave your name, and phone number.

Called to Serve: Adults are encouraged to become approved Liturgical Ministers by attending classes held periodically at Nativity. Please call the office, leave your name, and phone number if you are interested in becoming a Lay Minister.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Scheduling Events at the Church

Our parish is very busy and we receive many requests to use meeting spaces and the church grounds. Please contact Deacon Frank Larker at 382-2504 to schedule your event. All requests should be scheduled as far in advance as possible. Those who use our facility are responsible for setup and clean-up. You must notify the office if your event is cancelled or if you need to reschedule. You cannot reschedule an event WITHOUT contacting the office. Rescheduling your event without contact-ing the office leads to conflicts with others who went through the proper channel to schedule their event. So, please be consider-ate. Thank You!
