Mother Theresa’s ANYWAY prayer

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of

selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build it anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you’ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.

Breathe in Love,

Exhale Peace.

FATHER GERALD KAGGWA

We welcome with joyful hearts our new priest, Father Gerald Kaggwa! He would like us to call him Father Gerry. Father Gerry was born in Uganda on October 15th, 1962 to a large and loving family including 4 sisters and 9 brothers. His love of learning led him to studies outside of Uganda for the greater part of his life-to Kenya, England, Tanzania, Italy, Germany, and the United States. Along the way, Father Gerry earned higher education degrees in Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies. He also managed to pick up a few languages: Luganda, Italian, Swahili, Spanish, German (reading) and English. After attending seminary in London, England, Father Gerry was ordained in 1990. Before coming to the United States, Father Gerry was both Rector and Principal of a college in Tanzania for 14 years, until 2013. In Virginia, Father Gerry served as Parochial Vicar of St. Bridget Church in Richmond. After that much loved job, he was honored to be named as Pastor for a cluster of three Virginia parishes: St. Catherine of Siena in Clarksville, St. Paschal Baylon in South Boston, and Church of the Good Shepherd in South Hill. Like Church of the Visitation, these three parishes are all mission parishes with many parishioners who are retired. While there, Father Gerry worked very hard and with great success to raise money for their building campaigns as well as their Living Our Mission campaigns. It is our privilege and our joy to have Father Gerald Kaggwa as our new Pastor.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

FAITH FORMATION Faith Formation will begin September 18th. If you have any questions, need to register, or are interested in helping with the program in anyway please see Barbara Hollingsworth.

PARISH DIRECTORY Now that we have a new Pastor it’s time for a new church directory. The first step is to find two persons who will lead this effort which in the past was done by Patricia Travers and Kathy Kauffman, Respectively. If you are interested in leading or helping in this effort, contact the office.

BEHIND THE SCENES The volunteer services of our parishioners are extraordinary and provide the framework for a healthy and strong religious communi-ty. Many of you know the Ministry heads and observe the persons who each Sunday provide a visible presence of their church and parish commitment, But what about those who do the “behind the scenes” tasks that help enrich our community. Weekly, we will highlight these invisible ones for your information. Today it is Bob Borden, our maintenance and repair stalwart. Bob handles all those small and nagging repair projects that frequently arise and need a careful hand. Thank you Bob.

END OF LIFE PLANNING Our seminar is now set for September 24th from 8-12 at our church. We have about 40 parishioners signed up and can take more, so if you haven’t signed up yet, please see Lynne Richardson or e call her at 776-0949. The topics covered will be: Estate Planning, Hospice Care, Funeral Home Arrangements, and Planning A Memorial Service.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly is

hosting its annual golf tournament to benefit Virginia Veteran and Family Services (formerly named

the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program) at 12:00 PM on Friday, September 23 at Piankatank River Golf Club. All golfers are

welcome; $80 entry fee includes dinner. For information about registration, sponsorships, or donations please contact

Al Langer at 776-7427 ([email protected]) or Gary Richardson at 776-0949 ([email protected]).

LIVING OUR MISSION CAMPAIGN UPDATE We received a check for $4,820 last week as part of our share of donations to the campaign. To date we have donated $106,000 of our $198,700 pledge amount, resulting in a return of $70,673.

PARISH NEEDS We are looking for some small bud vases (to be donated) that can be given with flowers to the sick and homebound patients. Wanted: Pianist and/ or organist to accompany the choir for the Christmas Eve Service. Please see Carol McCormack or give her a call, 804-725-1656.

FATHER GERRY’S ORDINATION

NEW RECTORY PHONE NUMBER Please note that the Rectory phone number has been changed to 804-286-9271 effective immediately.

CONFIRMATION CLASS Do you know of anyone interested in learning about the Catholic Church? We are planning to begin

inquiring classes this fall for anyone who wants to learn more about the church or is interested in joining the church. The class is also an opportunity for adult Catholics who wish to be confirmed. If you are interested or for more information please contact the office.

MEET AND GREET It’s time to officially welcome our new Pastor to COV. Instead of a church picnic this year, we will have a welcome party for Father Gerry on Sunday, September 11th from 4:30-6:30PM. It will be a potluck affair. Please plan to come and bring a side dish or dessert to share with you fellow parishioners.

Discerning God’s will

Reading I: Wisdom 9:13–18a (Solomon’s prayer)

Reading II: Philemon 9b–10, 12–17 (plea for Onesimus)

Gospel: Luke 14:25–33 (sayings on discipleship)

Key Passage: For who can learn the counsel of God? Or

who can discern what the Lord wills? For the reasoning

of mortals is worthless, and our designs are likely to fail.

(Wisdom 9:13–14)

Adult: How do you try to discover what God is asking

of you?

Child: When is it hard for you to know the right thing

to do? Who helps you know?

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION BAPTISMAL CROSS (year C) Onesimus, a slave's name, means “useful”. We are each called by God to be useful to the divine plan. The baptized Onesimus is equal to any one of us. Because of Jesus, we are all brothers and sisters in God’s family. We are not the same; each of us is unique and has different gifts of the Spirit, but we all serve “in our place” the wisdom of God’s intentions. Our baptismal cross is the key to a true disciple of the one Master, Jesus. He says: “Follow me!” Do you take up your cross?

Climbing Up From Depression & A Checklist for Battling Depression

Emerging from depression is very much a “climb.” There are no easy

fixes for those down feelings, especially those that linger on and on.

These booklets offer comprehensive, proven guidance for those ready

to begin the journey to healing.

MEMORIAL BRICKS Periodically, we remind parishioners, new and old, of the availability of Memorial Bricks. The program is forever ongoing and bricks may be purchased for a donation of as little as $75. If you are interested, please inquire at the office, and we can provide you with all the necessary information. We are starting a new row of bricks so it’s time again to consider it.
