THE SHEPHERD KING
The job of shepherd and the job of king couldn’t be more different from each other. Shepherds are on the lowest rung of society, kings are at the top. But God says, through the prophet Ezekiel, that the Messiah will lead in a way very different from earthly authorities who lord it over their people and cause harm with their poor leadership. Our King takes on the job himself. Christ, like a shepherd, will give rest, seek out the lost, bring back the strayed and scattered ones. He will heal the wounded and bind up the injured. He does not delegate, but will “shepherd them rightly.” We have a king who cares for us and who is not afraid to “judge between one sheep and another” (Ezekiel 34:17). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish Staff
A look at the calendar tells us the year is winding down. Clearly, this is so for the Church’s year. The weekend of November 21/22 is the end of the liturgical cycle as we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus, King of the Universe. Along the way to the First Sunday of Advent, Americans also mark Thanksgiving Day, a day that, in another era, seemed to be the kick-off for the secular commencement of the Christmas season.
In any event, thinking about the end of things sharpens the attention. We are moved to assess, to reflect, to judge. We look not only to the past, but also to the here and now and see how the present is a trajectory to the future. The Scripture readings for Christ the King Sunday help in this, as do the Thanksgiving Day readings for Mass in the United States.
In the familiar Matthew 25 passage for Christ the King, we hear that famous refrain, “Lord, when did we see you troubled...hurting…thirsting…?” The measure of our success as a Christian is then defined by what we did for the least among us—whether or not we understood we were reaching out to Christ, the one who is revealed as king. He is again recognized as the center of all that is. Again, in our spirit of new year’s reflection, we ask ourselves whether we met Christ along the way over the past year, whether we are looking for him now, whether the trajectory of our lives is likely to encounter him—encounter him not only in the reality of the Eucharist but in the reality of those who walk the world’s stage and journey with us.
In a claim bordering on the fantastic, we come to know that my salvation is bound up in helping you and, for you —your path inevitably intersects mine.
Let us be like the tenth leper in the Thanksgiving Day Gospel—the healing of the ten lepers—and come back to Jesus in gratitude that he is the source of our healing, that he is the one around whom creation arises and revolves, and the one who gives us to each other.
-Deacon Richard Hudzik

The Solemnity of Christ the King
On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas ("In the first"). . . to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever.
The kingdom, already present and growing in our midst, engages us at every level of our being and reminds us of the principle of discernment which Pope Paul VI applied to true development: it must be directed to 'all men and the whole man'.
– Pope Francis, Evangelii gaudium, 181
The Kingdom is Holistic Secularism divides our public selves from our private selves. When governments limit the rights of religious ministries, secularists claim that religious freedom is not harmed because we still have freedom of worship, we are free in private but not in public. But the kingdom of God calls us to a whole life of worship and service in the public square. We cannot worship on Sunday and then deny Christ's teaching in the way we run our ministries throughout the week. Nationalism, on the other hand, divides our loyalties. It is good to love one's country, but ultimate loyalty is due only to Christ and his kingdom. Ideologies that ask us to put our nation above Christ and his Church are incompatible with service to the kingdom.
The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work every day, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly "post-Christian" society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and our parish communities, and to bringing healing to a broken world.
The Kingdom is Humble Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant, visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others.

November 22 SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE
Ezekiel introduces the metaphor of a shepherd tending a flock of sheep to describe God’s care for us. At the end God judges between sheep and goats, just as in the Gospel the Son of Man separates the sheep from the goats. However, another parallel in the two readings is marked by a crucial difference. In Ezekiel, the Lord GOD personally looks after and cares for the sheep. But in the Gospel, we sheep are called to care for those in need. In one sense, this adds a layer to the metaphor. But in another sense, the action is flipped. Instead of God caring for us, we are told that when we tend to others, we are actually caring for the Lord. “I was hungry and you have me food, I was thirsty and you have me drink…” (Matthew 25:35). May we follow the model of the righteous so that even the least among us may be cared for, so that we may spend eternal life with him who is King of the Universe, and “so that God may be all in all” (1 Corinthians 15:28).
How can you make the effort to see the Lord in the faces of all those in need?
