Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, I am very grateful that I have been able to enter the Mt. Carmel community in the summer. The pace of parish life is noticeably less hectic. I appreciate the opportunity to ease into my role as your new pastor. I have spent my first weeks among you interviewing parish staff and fulfilling the normal ministry duties. Thus far, I have also had one meeting with most of the members of the Parish Finance Council, also known as the Strategic Planning and Investment Committee. This coming week I am meeting for the first time with the Parish Advisory Board. Different parishes have called this advisory board by different names. For a time in our lifetimes they were called ‘Parish Council.’ Then, ‘Parish Ministry Board’ was in fashion for a while. I don’t mind what the group is called as long as it actually exists and functions. I view this group and the Parish Finance Council as essential allies in our joint mission to serve the Lord well together as the parish family of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. When the Parish Advisory Board meets this Wednesday evening, I have two major items for which I will be seeking their counsel: 1. We only receive Holy Communion under one species here: the Body of Christ – the Bread of Life. We do not seem to receive from the chalice – the Blood of Christ. I would like to revisit this question and hopefully return to the practice of partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ at every Mass. 2. We will soon be asked to enter into the latest Archdiocesan Capital Campaign, We Are Living Stones. I have already surfaced this matter with the Finance Council, but I also hope to hear what the Advisory Board has to say on the matter. REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES
Re-registration
Families currently registered in the program have been sent a letter and registration form to re-register their child for the 2015-2016 school year.
New Family Registration
New families to the Religious Education Program are asked to come in to the Religious Education Office to register their child. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call the Religious Education Office at 201-871-4662 to schedule a time that is convenient for you. We look forward to meeting you!
The Religious Education Program offers classes according to the following schedule. We have added a sixth grade class to our Tuesday afternoon option!

Many thanks to those of you who responded to our need for additional catechists in the Religious Education Program!! Our classes are now staffed with sufficient teachers for one class per grade.
We would like to offer more classes per grade level on Tuesday afternoons. Please consider becoming a catechist! We invite adults and high school students who have received the sacrament of Confirmation to this ministry! Call the Religious Education Office at 201-871-4662 for more information.

Rainbows for All God’s Children
Our Lady of the Visitation Church 234 Farview Avenue, Paramus
Our Lady of the Visitation Parish, Paramus, will once again offer the Rainbows Program. This program is a weekly support group for children, first through eighth grades, who are living in single-parent homes, or have families that are going through painful transitions. When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or a divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, but the children do also. Because of their age and short life experience children find it extremely difficult to verbalize those feelings. We have some very beautiful, sensitive, caring, trained adults who have said “yes” to helping these children put these feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger sense of self-esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family. The program is free to any child who needs us. Sessions begin on October 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. To facilitate the book order we will need families to register as soon as possible. Second Collection This Weekend Mission Appeal
This weekend there is a special second collection. Father Joseph Nyanti from the Diocese of Cape Palmas in Liberia will be speaking at all Masses. This is part of the Missionary Cooperative Plan of the Archdiocese of Newark.
The Diocese of Cape Palmas is located in the city of Cape Palmas in the Ecclesiastical Province of Monrovia in Liberia, West Africa. The Diocese of Cape Palmas ministers the sacraments of salvation to the people. Besides the administration of the sacraments, the diocese tries to meet the physical and social needs of the people in the areas of education, health, agriculture, justice and the rule of law through our Catholic Justice and Peace Commission. Father Joseph will be explaining the needs of his diocese.
This second collection takes place immediately after the regular offertory collection. Thanks for whatever support you can lend to the growing Catholic church in Africa.

This week we continue a summer reflection series on creation, spirituality and beauty. Here you’ll find theological articles, poetry, and reflections to challenge and inspire. “[Saint] Francis helps us to see that an integral ecology calls for openness to categories which transcend the language of mathematics and biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be human. Just as happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all other creatures into his praise. He communed with all creation, even preaching to the flowers, inviting them ‘to praise the Lord, just as if they were endowed with reason.’ His response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists. His disciple Saint Bonaventure tells us that, ‘from a reflection on the primary source of all things, filled with even more abundant piety, he would call creatures, no matter how small, by the name of ‘brother’ or ‘sister.’’ Such a conviction cannot be written off as naive romanticism, for it affects the choices which determine our behaviour. If we approach nature and the environment without this openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously.
