Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

2 February 7, 2016

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! “Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leav-ing everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

First Reading — In a vision Isaiah is called to be a messenger for the LORD of hosts. Isaiah responds, “Send me!” (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Psalm — In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 138). Second Reading — Paul reminds us of the gospel he preached through which we are saved, if we believe it (1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]). Gospel — Jesus directs Simon to take his boat into deep water for a miraculous catch of fish. Simon and his partners leave all to follow Jesus (Luke 5:1-11). WHERE GOD IS We cannot go where God is not. And where God is, all is well. —Anonymous

¡SANTO, SANTO, SANTO! “¡Santo, Santo, Santo!”.

May they and all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Praying Hands: How can you be a Minister to the Sick without ever leaving your own home? It’s easy!

Every week our bulletin has a list of people who have requested our prayers for healing, for hope, for courage and for strength. They need our prayers and they believe that our prayers are powerful. So, may I suggest that every day we pray for one person from that list. We can name that person as we bring our prayers to the heart of God and ask our loving God to lay His healing hands on them.

In that way, these people will no longer be names on a list, they will be people who are special to us and we can be prayer warriors in our own homes. Try it! Sr. Sheila

Holding Hands during the Our Father? “ADORATION OF THE LAMB” JAN VAN EYCK (1390– 1441)

Some of the faithful in the congregation are asking why the altar servers are no longer holding hands during the Our Father. Father Jerry asked me to explain why holding hands during the Our Father is not really something we need to worry about when we pray the Lord’s Prayer. We need to worry about the core of our faith. The center of our faith as Catholics is the Eucharist; the real presence of the Lord is what distinguishes us from other denominations. Holding hands during the Our Father was spontaneously introduced in our Catholic liturgy following Vatican II, but neither the U.S Catholic Conference of Bishops nor the Holy See had approved this practice. I think people mean well, but what we do in Mass says something about what we believe, so we must be careful what we do. Holding hands says we feel good about the person next to us and want to express this by holding their hand. But when we are praying the Our Father is a solemn moment in the Mass when we are petitioning our Father and our focus should be FORWARD not to either side of us. Praying to God is not just about good feelings. It's about giving Him proper respect and showing Him love. Another well-intentioned but improper gesture is extending the hands; this is a charismatic-type gesture and is Protestant in its roots. According to the Roman Missal, this posture is generally reserved for the priest. In fact, the Popes have always encouraged us to "pray the Mass with the priest" and we do this interiorly while the Priest performs the actions. Outside of the Mass anyone may assume this posture. Indeed if holding hands was introduced to express the unity of the congregation: “Our Father” not “My Father”, then should we not be holding hands throughout the entire Mass? The unity that is sought really comes later and after a spiritual progression: First, as we fall on our knees and the priest offers the sacrifice of the Mass: we recall not only our Lord's passion, death, and resurrection but also our need as individuals to offer ourselves to Him. Second, we pray in the words our Savior taught us, the Lord's Prayer, in which we ask, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," even the person next to us in the pew. Third, we offer the Sign of Peace, a gesture found in the earliest Masses to show a genuine unity based on peace and forgiveness. Finally, we receive Holy Communion, which truly brings us into communion with our Lord and with each other. Looking at the flow of this spiritual progression, the holding of hands at the Our Father is extraneous. Can a congregation hold hands anyway, even if it is extraneous? While no one can find fault if a husband and wife, or a family want spontaneously to hold hands during the Lord's Prayer, the priest does not have the right to introduce, mandate, or impose it. The Code of Canon Law (1983) does mandate: "The liturgical books approved by the competent authority are to be faithfully observed in the celebration of the sacraments; therefore, no one on personal authority may add, remove, or change anything in them" (Canon 826.1). “Then, a person in the pew should not feel obliged or coerced to hold hands with someone else during the Lord's Prayer, yet congregational "peer pressure" could easily lead to such feelings. One can only imagine how intimidated a person must feel by the rest of the congregation if he/she does not desire to hold hands, whether because of personal preference or because of another reason such as arthritis.”¨ Again, our main focus should be what is happening during Mass, in the Altar, when Jesus Our Lord is really present. Our leaders from Saint Joseph Catholic community came to the conclusion that there has to be some kind of instruction while we implement this change in the altar server ministry. I want to emphasize that hold-ing hands during the Our Father is NOT REQUIRED AND ANYONE WHO WISHES NOT TO HOLD HANDS DURING THE “OUR FATHER” SHOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE IN DOING SO! I hope I have clarified the reasons for this change and that we are here for you and willing to answer any further questions and concerns. Thanks for taking your time on reading this article.
