PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by God to reach out to others. He also describes this individual's willingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that with God's help, he will not be disgraced.

Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God, but took on human form. He humbled himself enough to ac-cept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted him and wants us to respect Jesus' name and worship him.

Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56 Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with the apostles, where Jesus tells them he will soon suffer in fulfill-ment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that he might be spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Jesus, he was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus was guilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, and sen-tenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus was crucified and his body laid in a new tomb.

Vocations Crucifix

This Lent we are once again doing the vocations crucifix project. We have a crucifix and prayer packets for each of the 4 Masses for all the weeks of Lent. Please sign up for a week using the sign up sheets in the back of each church. When your week comes, get the crucifix (corresponding to the Mass you attend) and prayer packet from the sacristy. Return the cross to that same Mass the following week and keep the prayer materials. Pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, especially from our parishes!

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER The Gospel today is the story of the prodigal son, which is really all of our stories, because we have all fallen short of the mark at times. God always waits for us with open, loving arms. Sign up today to attend one of the upcoming Worldwide Marriage Encounter Week-ends on Apr. 1-3 or June 10-12. For more information call Steve and Michelle O’Leary at 1-800-710-WWME, or visit our webpage at www.wwme.org.

Louie Zamperini was a record-setting runner when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in the Pacific. In 1943, his plane crash-landed in the Pacific Ocean, and he was captured by the Japa-nese. He was a prisoner of war until 1945 and suffered severe physical and emotional trauma from the brutal guards. When he returned to the US, he got married and tried to settle down to a normal life. But he had flashbacks and began drinking heavily. He was violent towards his wife. Basically, his life was in a downward spiral. In 1949, his wife told him that the marriage was over unless he went to listen to the Christian preacher Billy Graham speak. He describes what happened next: Billy said that God tells us: “Cast all your cares on me, for I care for you.” I said, “Well, if I can get that kind of help, there might be a chance for me.” So I went forward to the prayer room and I acknowledged to God that I was a sin-ner and then invited Christ into my life. And then the most remarkable thing that ever happened took place. True to His promise, He came into my heart and into my life. Zamperini’s life changed. He stopped drinking and dedi-cated his life to helping at-risk youth. He was finally able to forgive the guards who had tortured him. His story was published in the book Unbroken, which was later made into a movie. Last Wednesday, we completed our Parish Lenten Mis-sion given by Fr. Victor Silva. In a beautiful way, we were reminded that mercy is an attribute of God, but we are invited to participate in this supernatural gift. We are those who receive God’s mercy, and we are also those who can pass it to others. It is good to receive and live out God’s mercy; this is what Pope Francis calls us to during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Here is a story of a mother who once approached Na-poleon, seeking a pardon for her son. The emperor re-plied that the young man had committed a certain offense twice, and justice demanded death. “But I don’t ask for justice,” the mother explained. “I plead for mercy.” “But your son does not deserve mercy,” Napoleon replied. “Sir,” the woman cried, “It would not be mercy if he de-served it, and mercy is all I ask for.” “Well,” then the em-peror said, “I will have mercy.” And he spared the woman’s son. We can say that none of us deserves mercy. It is God’s gift to us. God’s mercy can change our hearts, and make of us people of abundant forgiveness and mercy towards others. Jesus, I trust in You. Have a Holy Week!

CYO BASKETBALL St. Theresa’s Coaches William Brigham and Richard Braz have led the Division 1 Grammar boys to a State title.
