18th November 2018

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

I don’t think any Sunday is “Ordinary”. Yet we have 33 of them! I remember, as a boy, being thoroughly bored by the endless succession of “Sundays after Pentecost”, which term was, perhaps, marginally more appealing than “Ordinary”. But here we are, very close now to the start of a new Church Year,

with the tantalising appeal of Advent.

But with what do the readings for this Sunday confront us? We’re led to ponder where we’re going in

the future – our future in the future. Which way for us? Up or down?

I suppose most of us have thought, “What is heaven like? Does it change? Will there be anything we recognise? Any people we recognise?” At one time I thought the “Heaven” I’d like would offer me the opportunity to laze in the shade on a sunny day, watching master cricketers of all times play at a ground

like Newlands in Capetown. I’m now quite a bit older, but that thought still has much appeal!

I’m not so enamoured with the idea of playing a harp in an angelic choir, twenty-four hours a day (does heaven have days?). That depiction of heaven, popular with many artists and writers, seems repetitive

and, dare I say, boring!

Whatever our dreams of heaven may be, one thing is certain: they will be way off reality and we must ready ourselves for that reality. Isaiah says that what God prepares for those his Son has redeemed

will include “Everlasting Joy” – and perhaps an afternoon at Newlands?

The Annual Sick and Retired Priests Special Collection Sunday 2 December 2018 On behalf of the Bishop, the Clergy Trust Fund provides for the well-being and care of priests in the Diocese. This includes stipends, food, travel home for overseas priests, retreats, and all costs relating to healthcare. The Clergy Trust Fund is struggling to meet growing medical costs. Hence, your giving to this special collection is most appreciated especially by our elderly priests who then benefit from your generosity. Your support is a great way of showing your gratitude to your priests. Many thanks and blessings to all who contribute to this special collection. Every contribution helps. FIREWORKS DISMAL: Adoration more powerful than sky

rockets

40 hours of adoration was truly magnificent. During 40 hours of

perpetual adoration over 400 people spent some time in adoring

the most Blessed Sacrament. Adoration has warmth, emotion,

sincerity, love, indwelling, peacefulness, truthfulness before

God, and God speaking to our hearts. Thanks to the Knights of

the Southern Cross and the promoters. Their promotion of the

adoration was brilliant. All had passion, which enabled others to

seek, and then sparkle.

Thankyou,

Fr Brian

White Ribbon Sunday—November 25th

White Ribbon Day is the international day for the elimination of

men’s violence towards women.

Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruits of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are incompatible with violence against women and children. If we see and do not act, then we are guilty. If we hear and do not act, we are also guilty. We cannot be a pacifist and sit and watch violence against women and children. To know, and to learn and to do nothing against violence towards a women or child is not a noble

act, and certainly defiles Christianity. Fr Brian

St. Mary’s Primary School -

The Parishioners of the Parish of Hastings are warmly invited to attend the Blessing and Opening of our new Junior Block on Tuesday 27 November at 11.15pm. The ceremony will take place outside the Junior Block and last approximately 45 minutes followed by light refreshments. We hope that you are able to join us on this very special occasion. St. Joseph’s Primary School– Term 4 : Week 5 At our School Mass we welcomed into our Catholic community two of our students who were baptised. It was a special celebration as we also remembered those who gave their lives during the First World War and the signing of the Armistice which brought about peace after four terrible years. It is with sadness we announce the resignation of Whaea Aroha who will be taking up Bachelor of Teaching studies in 2019 at the EIT. We wish Aroha every success in her studies. We would also like to announce the appointment of Miss Tara Crompton to our school staff for 2019. Our top orators faced St. Mary’s for the annual speech cups with St. Marys taking the Liturgical Readings Awards and our Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 taking the Speech cups. Congratulations to all who took part. You are

a credit to your school and your families.

St. John’s College - Things have quietened down considerably at school with our senior students off doing external examinations. Some of our young men are up for more national awards with regard to our Young Enterprise and Social Enterprise projects. This year our teams have made presentations to the Commission set up to look into mental health, have engaged with community mental health organisations, won awards for “George”, a rainfall and water level monitoring device which sends a text message to the owner when there is risk of flooding; had an organic based fragrance for men market tested by the Leader of the Opposition, Simon Bridges and presented our concerns regarding water quality in Hawke’s Bay to the Chair of the HB Regional Council. All this done outside school, on top of work, sport and academic commitments. Our Young Vinnies have recently set up a small community garden on the vacant plot which is on the corner of Nelson Street and Cornwall Road. We have planted silverbeet, bokchoi. Lettuce and Cavolonero (Italian spinach). Please help yourself if you are in the area. Finally, we offer our prayers and condolences to Bishop Charles on the passing of his

mother. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her.

Sacred Heart College— NCEA exams continue throughout the week and our Junior school is busy with lots of extra-curricular activities with Aquatics Day, Museum visits and Year 10’s on work experience. The Year 9’s are looking forward to their retreat at St Patrick’s with the Napier City Council's Strategic Maori Advisor, Charles Ropitini, working with the girls in the morning and a time for them to reflect and strengthen their connection with our Lord with Fr Kevin guiding and exploring the mass. In addition to these days, we are holding our Induction Day with the Year 9’s enrolled for 2019. We look forward to welcoming them into our sisterhood. Please contact the school office if

you need more information about enrolling in 2019. God Bless, Maria Neville-Foster
