Senior Parochial Vicar
OPV Churches
Fellow members of the OPV faith community:
Every year, as the Liturgical year draws to a close, we observe
feasts and listen to Scriptures at Mass which remind us that one day our
mortal lives will also draw to a close. We recall that one day we will face
God in judgment, and then we will find ourselves in heaven, hell, or
purgatory. The Church refers to these mysteries as the “Last Things.”
Regarding heaven, the Catechism of the Catholic Church
teaches: “Those who die in God's grace and friendship and are perfectly
purified live for ever with Christ” (#1023); about purgatory: “All who die in
God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed
assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo
purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of
heaven” (#1030); and of hell: “To die in mortal sin without repenting and
accepting God's merciful love means remaining separated from Him for
ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from
communion with God and the blessed is called ‘hell’” (#1033).
The Feasts of All Saints and All Souls help us to reflect on these
“Last Things” with the help of God’s gifts of faith, hope, and the
redemptive love of Jesus Christ. Our belief in the Communion of Saints is
important enough that we set aside a Holy Day of Obligation every year to
celebrate our relationships with them. All Saints Day helps us to
acknowledge and thank the Saints who watch over us with prayers and
support, and to seek their intercession on our behalf. It reminds us that
heaven is God’s plan for us. It invites us to cast our hearts on God’s
mercy and resolve to pursue lives of personal holiness. Where the Saints
have gone, we hope to follow. We want God’s help to be ready for our
eternal judgment. All Souls Day gives us an opportunity to remember our
deceased family members and friends and to pray for the eternal repose
of their souls. In the Old Testament, the 2
nd
Book of Maccabees describes
prayers and sacrifices for the dead as “very excellent and noble,” “holy
and pious” (2Mac 12: 39-46).
A question that always arises at this time of the year is: Is
Halloween OK for observant Catholics or not? Is it evil, or can it be
embraced and practiced by people of faith? A simple review of the
historical origins for the customs we celebrate at Halloween can help
answer these questions. The name Halloween developed in Ireland as a
contraction for All Hallows Eve(ning), identifying the evening or vigil before
All Saints Day. Without All Saints Day, there would be no Halloween. No
candy, no fun, no celebrations without the Saints. It is good for our
children to understand this. The carving of pumpkins for Jack-O-Lanterns
originated in Ireland, Germany, and other countries where people would
carve faces on and hollow out turnips for use as lanterns to represent
hope for the souls in Purgatory. In Germany, processions with lanterns
also mark the beginning of the Advent Season.
In France, during the Middle Ages when wars and plagues took
many lives, and led people to think more seriously about eternal life, All
Souls Day became a day when people would put on costumes and
participate in what was called the “danse macabre,” roughly translated
“spooky dance.” In Spanish speaking cultures, people observe All Souls
Day as the “Day of the Dead” and make sweets that look like skeletons
and skulls. This reflects the Catholic belief that we can face death with
laughter, dancing, and celebration. Because Jesus has conquered death,
we do not fear it.
Trick or treating originated in England when children would go
door to door on All Souls Day begging for “soul cakes,” and promising to
pray for the souls of the givers and their loved ones. In America, all of
these folk customs originating from Catholic countries have been
transferred to Halloween, and have become a part of our national culture
where communities come together and celebrate generosity to children.
As we approach the end of another liturgical year, these feasts
give us teachable moments for our children. We can teach them or ask
questions:
1) We go to Mass on All Saints Day because Halloween is about
the Saints and our desire to be with them and God forever in
heaven.
2) God’s plan is for us to be with Him in Heaven.
3) What do we need to repent from to be like the Saints?:
Seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
4) Identify good actions and habits to be more like the
Saints. Make some resolutions.
5) It’s because we celebrate the Saints that we have Halloween.
*No Saints = no fun.
6) Holy costumes can be an option.
7) We do not fear death because Jesus has conquered death in the
Resurrection.
8) Be grateful and kind to your neighbors.
9) Pray for the people who gave you candy.
10) Choose Saint(s) to be your special friend(s).
11) Think about who you want to pray for on All Souls Day. Pray
together as family for them. Go to the cemetery and remember
them.
12) After eating your candy, brush your teeth!
Wishing you God’s grace in the
approaching feasts,
Fr. George Dalton

READING I WIS 11:22-142:2
Before the LORD the whole universe is as a grain from a balance or a
drop of morning dew come down upon the earth. But you have mercy on
all, because you can do all things; and you overlook people's sins that
they may repent. For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that
you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned. And
how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not
been called forth by you? But you spare all things, because they are
yours, O LORD and lover of souls, for your imperishable spirit is in all
things! Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them and
remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon
their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD!
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13, 14
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
I will extol you, O my God and King, and I will bless your name forever
and ever. Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever
and ever.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones
bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of
your might.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works.
The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed
down.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
READING 2 2 THES 1:11-2:2
Brothers and sisters: We always pray for you, that our God may make
you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good
purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may
be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God
and Lord Jesus Christ.
We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your
minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit," or by an oral
statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the
Lord is at hand.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 3:16
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him might have eternal life.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 18:9-14
At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the
town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax
collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in
stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see
Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place,
Jesus looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I
must stay at your house." And he came down quickly and received him
with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has
gone to stay at the house of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood there and
said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the
poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four
times over." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this
house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son
of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost."
SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
10 MANERAS DE ENCONTRAR UNA UNIÓN VERDADERA CON DIOS EN
MEDIO DEL CAOS (primera parte)
Nuestras vidas espirituales exigen
compromiso, deseo, trabajo y esfuerzo continuo.
perdemos. Para conseguirlo, hemos de preguntarnos regularmente: “¿He
perdido a Jesús? ¿Qué puedo hacer en los próximos días para encontrarle?”.

LOW GLUTEN HOSTS
Occasionally, with those who have tried to
receive low gluten hosts at our Masses,
there has been some confusion which pyx is
used to distribute. We have found a pyx that
is labeled “Low Gluten” and with a red cover
that will now be used at each church in our
grouping. The pyx should be stored in the
mini-fridge in each sacristy where the low gluten hosts are
stored when not in use at Mass. If you go to the fridge to get the
pyx and it is missing, then it is likely already out for someone
else who is receiving LG-Hosts.
We welcome any Catholic at any of the OPV churches who is
gluten intolerant to receive special hosts at Mass. Anyone want-
ing to receive a low gluten host (very low gluten) is welcome to
learn how to receive in each church by contacting the priest or
sacristan. He/she would simply find their hosts in the sacristy
before Mass in the mini-refrigerator and place in a pyx and set
on the tray or the altar so that they are consecrated by the priest
during Mass. The priest or another minister who stands where
the priest usually stands will then distribute them when coming
forward for Holy Communion.
St. John the Baptist School's next restaurant fundraiser is on
November 8th at the Outback Steakhouse in Monroeville ALL
DAY!! Enjoy a delicious meal and St. John's school will receive
20% donated back when you give your server this flyer!

Anyone who is a senior, in poor health, or
expecting surgery soon is encouraged to
receive this sacramental Anointing of the

are also encourage for physical and
spiritual health.
Sunday, November 17th,10:00 AM at Our Lady of Joy

Anima Christi—Soul of Christ
The author of this traditional prayer from the Roman Missal is unknown. It has often been attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-
1556), for it was indeed a favorite of his and it appears at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises. However, he could not have been
its author for a copy of the prayer appears in a document from 1334, a good century and a half before St. Ignatius was born. Others
have attributed it to Blessed Bernadine of Feltre (1439-1494), but again the prayer was around for at least a century before his time
as well. The prayer is also known as the Prayer of St. Patrick and some scholars formerly placed the prayer's composition in seventh
century Ireland. This too seems unlikely, since no copy that early is known to exist. The prayer carries a partial indulgence.

SOUL of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

Separated from Thee let me never be.
From the malignant enemy, defend me.
At the hour of death, call me.
To come to Thee, bid me,

Saint Vincent de Paul
Friends...Our Saint Vincent de Paul conference has completed our annual report. We are
very appreciative for the outstanding support that you have provided our ministry in the
local communities. We also wish to recognize the support of food provided by the Ladies
of Charity and the RCAC Organization. During the past year, our Vincentian members
were able to make 83 home visits (covering over 700 miles) to 153 adults and 134
children. Some of the financial aid covered gas, electric and water bills, many of the
utilities were already turned off or had a shut off notice attached to them. Your generosity
also provided bedding, furniture, bus passes and many other types of help. We wish to
highlight one family (a single mom with four children) that could not provide suitable
clothing or shoes for the new school year. You clothed them...Thank you.

FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Ways of Forgiveness
This inspiring and practical guide opens us
up to the spiritual gift of forgiveness. The
author considers what sin is and how it
affects our lives, and then shows how the
Sacraments of Reconciliation can heal us
from the effects of sin. In seeking God’s
forgiveness we can in turn obtain the grace
to forgive others and heal our relationships
with them.

help our school. To those of you who have never tried this
program, won’t you consider beginning to help. Many of our
parishioners have scaled back their
budgets due to the economy, however, the need to
purchase gas, prescription drugs and food never ends.
Please consider purchasing Giant Eagle, Community and

FUNERAL CROSS
As we continue the journey to becoming
one parish often some of our individual
traditions change as new ones are
evolving. For many years at 0LOJ there
was the tradition of receiving a cross
during the funeral liturgy.
As of October 5, 2019 this tradition will
be discontinued as we begin creating
new ways to celebrate the lives of those
who died.

MEET THE STAFF
Beau Quattrone
Principal, St. John the Baptist /
St. Joseph Catholic Schools

Beau is pulling double duty as Principal of St. John
the Baptist and St. Joseph Schools. He has begun his fourth year as
Principal at St. John the Baptist school and is beginning his first year in
charge of St. Joseph school in Verona.
Beau graduated from Ringgold High School and earned a football
scholarship to attend the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, VA.
Beau graduated from VMI with a BA in Modern Languages (French
Language & Literature) He was invited to try out with the Seattle
Seahawks as a free agent. After his release, he attended California
University of PA as a Graduate Assistant football coach.
Beau graduated from California University of PA with a Masters degree in
Elementary Education. After graduation, he substitute taught for various
school districts in the Pittsburgh area. He then accepted a position with
Allstate Insurance company as a casualty claim rep where he worked for
12 years.
Beau was offered a Middle School teaching position at Madonna Catholic
where he attended elementary school and taught all three of his
children while at Madonna. He made the decision to return to school and
pursue his administration/principal certification. Beau graduated in 2014
from Duquesne University with two Master degrees. One degree was for
Administration and the other degree was in Curriculum and Instruction.
Beau was hired in August of 2016 as the Principal of St. John the Baptist
School and in July of 2019 he was named Principal of St. Joseph School
as well. Beau is very excited about this new adventure in his life and will
work diligently to keep catholic education alive in both communities.

Beau resides in White Oak, PA with his wife, Jennifer. They have three
children. Anna is a Catholic University graduate, resides in DC and
works for the Archdiocese of Washington DC, Zachary is a recent
Washington & Jefferson graduate and is leaving at the end of October to
play professional football in Italy, and Elizabeth is a Freshman at St.
Francis University in Loretto, PA. As you can see, Beau is a firm and
strong believer in catholic education.
If you have any questions or concerns about catholic education in our
grouping, he will be glad to answer them for you.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
For the past several years a group has met to preview the upcoming Sunday
readings. While structured it is not formal. We read the First, Second and
Gospel readings and share our insights, the relationships among the
readings, questions, and information from commentators. It is not a Bible
study but more a discussion where we share and seek. We meet each
Tuesday after Morning Prayer following the 9:00 A.M. Mass at OLOJ (around
9:50). Please come and join us for coffee and sharing.
