The Chicago Powerboat Show By: Nancy Pritzel There had been rumors abounding about the Chicago Boat Show and how “terrible” it would be. True, there were no 50’ boats, but there were 30’ and 40’ boats. Overall they had shrunk the space so all space was filled. I had heard on the radio that the number of exhibitors had decreased from 300 to 250. A smaller space made it easier to walk and see everything. There was a wonderful and large exhibit of antique (and not so antique) restored wooden boats. There were a number of antique Johnson, Evinrude, etc. engines to look at. There were also restored wooden canoes. Looking at the canoes made me think we might have a gold mine in the canoe hanging over the bar! The Boat Show was good for the yacht club. We had one couple join the club on Saturday. We also collected emails for a number of good prospects. We were glad we attended. DAN SCHULZE, COMMODORE of those members has a signifi cant other. When it is “B” Docks turn for breakfast they have a potential to have 76 members on hand and always put on an extravagant breakfast. Some of the smaller docks might only have six members and it is diffi cult to put on a big breakfast.

The idea we came up with involves a breakfast crew. This crew would be comprised of club members from various docks and the number assigned would be consistent from week to week. For example; The club has approximately 200 members and the majority of those members have a signifi cant other (or children). For the sake of conversation, let’s say 400 members. Breakfasts are prepared from Memorial Day to Labor Day which is 15 Sunday breakfasts. Divided evenly that would allot 26 people to purchase and prepare breakfast ONCE throughout the season. You may not know but the bigger docks usually have to prepare two breakfasts and those of us on the board have done at least three (the fi rst, the last and our own dock breakfast). Under the new plan, each member couple would only have to make one breakfast.

The other nice thing of being able to have 26 people assigned to a galley crew each week is the cost. Having done the shopping for the board breakfasts, I can say it costs approximately 250 dollars to make a real nice breakfast including about 30 dozen eggs, sausage or ham, juice, coffee, sweet rolls, fruit and mimosas’. This would equate to only 10 dollars a person.

An added side benefi t would be that club couples would be assigned from various docks to form a galley crew which would let members get to know one another. This would be the fi rst year we have ever tried this but is seems to address all the issues that have been brought to my attention. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, I would love to hear from you. As Commodore, I and all the members of the board listen to each and every member and try the best we can to accommodate the concerns of all the members. This is the solution we have come up with for the 15 Sunday breakfasts in 2010.

We will be putting a detailed schedule out well in advance of the fi rst breakfast and will be seeking feedback throughout the year to see how this works for the membership.

I hope to see you at the club!

Sunday Breakfasts

One of the most cherished “member benefi ts” at the club are the Sunday Breakfasts. Always well attended, the breakfasts served will routinely top 100 people on a given Sunday. Over time I have received some complaints about the breakfasts usually from those who are asked to participate in making the breakfasts but usually do not go to the breakfasts themselves.

I took this problem to the board and we are working on a solution that will be fair and equitable to all the club members. One of the biggest problems is the larger docks (“B” dock for example) has approximately 38 members. Each

NEW YEARS DAY FOOTBALL PARTY by Nancy Pritzel

Sub-zero temperatures didn’t stop over thirty club members from gathering at the clubhouse to watch football and enjoy a pot luck lunch. The Northwestern game was on and we were all biting our fi ngernails with Connie and Peter Webster as Northwestern would keep coming from behind. It was an exciting game and the score was tied at the end of regulation play. Unfortunately, Northwestern lost in overtime. We had to console ourselves with plates full of food. The Vilimeks brought their delicious smoked turkey. There were appetizers, salad, and desserts galore.

The New Years Day party is a great time to share conversation about the fun we had over the holidays and really begin thinking about boating season. Although the harbor is frozen, the fi replace in the clubhouse keeps us warm. We’re all talking about the upcoming season, the places we hope to visit, future social activities, and who might have a new boat come summertime.

If you are not a snowbird, you should defi nitely join the fun at our New Years Day party in 2011.

How Panic Affects our I.Q.by

Capt. Betti

I want to share this bit of information to my fellow boaters so that it could someday be useful in your times of panic, especially when you are out on the water. For the people that don’t know me; I am afraid of large bodies of water. The love I have for the water prevents me from being controlled by this fear. I take it upon myself to confront and always learn from it, which keeps me humble and respectful of the water.

As a research scientist in biochemistry, I have been exposed to a plethora of scientifi c research as part of my job in pharmaceuticals. I will do my best to make it in laymen’s term so you don’t need to understand science to follow. My goal is to encompass a wider audience range from 4 to 90years old. What happens in the brain when one panics? The brain sends a message to the rest of the body to sound the alarm. The amygdale is the part of the brain that holds old memories, feelings, sensations and emotions and then sends this information to the rest of our body. It is in the amygdale that we store, among other things, all of our primal memories of powerlessness and helplessness that we experience during infancy and early childhood. The amygdale hears the alarm, and instantly calls up the memories of past events that were dangerous and terrifying. The over-activity of these brain chemicals shoots the danger neurotransmitters that clog up the pathways to the smart & relaxed neurotransmitters from successfully making the jump over our body’s response commands.

Have you noticed that when one panics; one does the dumbest things? Ongoing scientifi c research has been done on the affects of panic on ones I.Q. It has been proven is that when we panic, it reduces our I.Q. signifi cantly.

There are some relaxations techniques that can help change your thinking and avoid being a victim of these brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that reduce your IQ in times of panic. The fi rst thing to do is calm down. When we are nervous, we have trouble learning, remembering and strategizing. Second thing is to let it go. Change your thinking and you’re breathing will get deeper and slower. Change your breathing and your thinking will get calmer and clearer. Third thing is to breathe. This can increase your blood fl ow with oxygen to your brain.
