THE HAPPY TRUTH ABOUT THE LENTEN JOURNEY

Lent is not about suffering and sacrifice. It's a corri-dor to new life. Good Friday is not about evil and pain and death. It's the door that Jesus opens to in-vite us into that new life.

Yes, suffering is part of the Lenten journey (which can be experienced at any time of the year). Yes, Lent includes the sacrifices of fasting and absti-nence, almsgiving and extra time in church. But these are just vehicles for the trip.

God uses our sufferings (if we let him) to help us grow in compassion, persistence, and ministry.

Our sacrifices help us learn discipline (which is disci-pleship) so that we can purify our will and grow stronger in holiness. But the trip is not the destina-tion.

Lent is all about reaching the resurrection: renewing our faith, entering a new life free of old sins, recon-ciling damaged relationships, and living in the Spirit of God more than we ever did before.

Which day is more important to your faith: Good Fri-day or Easter Sunday? That horrid day on Calvary was absolutely necessary for Easter, but we are liv-ing in the resurrection!

Catholics are an Easter people. This means that nothing bad can ever happen to us that will not be transformed into blessings if Jesus is the Lord of our lives.

He proved himself to be the Resurrection and the Life by displaying his power over life and death. Now he wants to prove it again -- to you and to all those who are watching. 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Printed by permission.

2020 LENTEN REGULATIONS

During the days and weeks of penance that lie ahead---from Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020 until Holy Thursday, April 9, 2020--- the Catholic Church throughout the world commemorates the penitential season of Lent. The model Jesus gave us for “these forty days” was his own experience in the desert and the temptations that followed him there where he encountered Satan face-to-face. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert --- alone, fasting and in intense prayer --- beat back the devil and tri-umphed over temptation, as strong and as unrelent-ing as it was throughout those forty days.

We enter the desert of Lent like Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, to face our devils, our temptations head on. But we are not alone. The Lord Jesus Christ is with us. And so, too, is the Church, the entire com-munity of faith observing Lent. Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States requires of us as baptized Catholics:

The days of FAST (only one full meal) and AB-STINENCE (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No dispensations are granted on these solemn days except for reason of sickness or those provided in canon law below. All other Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTI-NENCE (no meat).

Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to FAST (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to ABSTAIN (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat).

The obligation to observe the laws of fast and absti-nence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to ob-serve one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any peniten-tial days at all, or a substantial number of penitential days, that must be considered serious.

The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty”---for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sun-day of Lent, March 9-10 to Trinity Sunday, June 15-16 However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

Catholics are encouraged to go to Confession and to make use of the sacrifices and traditions that have always been part of our Lenten practices in the Church.

We do, indeed, fast and pray with the Lord Jesus and with our fellow Catholics. May this Lent be a time of penance leading to grace and joy for us all at Easter.

RCIA NEWS

Your prayers and your support are important for our sisters and brothers who have been journeying for so many months toward the sacraments of Christian initiation. We urge you to prepare for the celebration of the Scrutinies in a personal way by discerning what it is in your own life that needs to be freed from sin’s bondage. Join in spirit with all in our community who turn to Jesus for freedom from sin and protection from all evil. Please continue to hold in your Lenten prayers the elect and all in our catechumenate who count on you for support in making their faith jour-ney.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP

As we all face what has become a grave and grow-ing health risk, it is important for all the Catholic faithful to “persevere in hardship and keep praying regularly (Romans 12:12).” As Bishop of the Dio-cese of Trenton, I invite all the Catholic faithful to join with me in prayer:

O Mary, loving Mother, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust

ourselves to you, who at the Cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana

of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the

will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings

and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Be present to all those suffering from coronavirus and to those who care for them: families, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses, staff, government offi-cials, pastors, priests and all who seek to do God’s will. Bring comfort and calm to the elderly, to those at risk and to all who are afraid. Be for us all a bea-con of hope, lighting our path once more to the heart of your beloved Son, the Divine Healer and Health

of the Sick.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Deliver us from every danger, O glorious

and blessed Virgin. Amen.
