Worship—LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney LITURGY CORNER SERIES 2 - SONG STORIES

Christ the Icon

I’ve been searching for a new idea to begin again with the Liturgy Corner series and was given the idea that maybe a weekly piece on one of my songs might be a good new series. So I’ll give that a go and see whether it sits well with everyone. The idea would be to talk a little bit inspiration, theology and just a little bit of the personal side of the song. I will try to tie it in with a piece we use that week at Mass or at least that we use frequently enough that you might remember it. At least, with over 200 songs, it’s an idea I could use until I retire. Or until next month, if it’s a complete bust!

So for this first one, I thought I’d write a little bit about Christ the Icon, which is the song we used for Communion today at most of the Masses and which was the title song from our 2005 album of the same name. You will remember singing the refrain (I hope!) that goes like this:

Christ is the image of the unseen God, Our life, our peace, and our lasting. Praise and thanksgiving to the crucified Who endures, while the mighty are passing.

There were two specific ideas behind my writing this song. The first is in that first line of the chorus, “Christ is the image of the unseen God.” Of course, that is a direct quotation from Colossians 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God.” The Greek word in that sentence for “image” is eikon, which we render in English as “icon.” That word has a specific meaning in 2nd century Greek. An “icon” was a painted or even carved image of a spiritual being or even an ancestral deity that was carried (by a soldier, for instance) or set up at a home altar to inspire reverence, memory and prayer for safety and blessing. You may recall the general Maximus in the movie Gladiator, praying to small icons of his family and familial gods on the night before the battle with Germanic forces near the Danube. The idea, which carried over into Christian iconography, is that the picture actually carries within itself some of the reality of what is depicted. When Paul (or pseudo-Paul, probably) says in Colossians that “He (Christ) is the icon of the invisible God,” he means that Christ is the visible representation of the unseen reality of the Holy One. What we see in Christ is who God really is, what God is really like. This is borne out in the gospels as well, as when Jesus says, “Philip, whoever has seen me has seen the Father,” (Jn 14:9) and where, in the synoptics, Jesus tells the disciples, “Whoever receives you, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives the one who sent me.” (Mt. 10:40, Lk. 10:16).

So what I set out to do in Christ the Icon was to create a litany of who Christ actually is, what he said and did from the scriptures, which the cantor would sing and to which the rest of us would respond, “the image of the unseen God.” I’m pretty convinced, as you may know if you have heard me speak or read my blog, that since the time of Charlemagne when Christianity became the state religion, that we have confused Christ with the emperor. We have to be very careful to compare what we believe about Christ and God with what scripture actually says about them, because we can be seduced by power, wealth and influence into thinking God is like those things.

The other idea flows from that: it is that it is the crucified Christ whom we proclaim in the Eucharist, or, as St. Paul puts it in 1 Cor. 11, “When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the death of the Lord.” On this day, when we hear “the rest of the story” of Peter’s confession from last week and hear from Jesus what it really means to be the anointed (messiah, Christ) of God, it is important to remember how pivotal the cross is in the story of Jesus and the church. When the emperor and the temple said “no” to Jesus’s message of inclusive love and unity and killed him, the Father of Jesus said, “Yes,” and raised him up again. Jesus has made us part of that great mystery of faith, and we celebrate it every week.

You can get the CD of Christ the Icon by going to the World Library website, http://www.wlp.jspaluch.com/1284.htm, or by visiting iTunes or Amazon.com.

Help us support the Greater Chicago Food Depository and its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and programs. Donate to the annual Hunger Walk in the name of St. Columbanus Food Pantry. A portion of each donation goes directly to their pantry, and they receive money for every walker who signs up for their team. The process is fast, easy and secure. It will benefit a great cause.

Almost 14,000 children were fed by the St. Columbanus Food Pantry in 2016, and almost 800 have been fed so far this year. Visit http://www.classy.org/team/124770 to donate and plan to walk on Saturday, September 16th.

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story

Keep in mind that Matthew is writing retrospectively1 to a community that was composed mostly of Judean (Jewish) Christians.

For several Sundays, we have been tracking the grow-ing awareness by Jesus that he is the Christ, the Messiah. On the 19th Sunday,2 the disciples, terrified that they are seeing a ghost walking across the sea, are reassured by Jesus’ claim, ego eimi,3 (It is I), and the thus emboldened Peter challenges: Lord, if it is you … Peter is enabled but sinks from fright yet is sustained by Jesus who comments that Peter has such little faith (solidarity); the rest in the boat affirm Jesus’ claim: Truly you are the Son of God. On the 20th Sunday,4 at the persistent plea of a non-believer to help her tormented daughter, Jesus finally capitulates, praises her for having great faith5 and says Let it be done for you … and the daughter was healed.6 Last week,7 Jesus genuinely seeks to know who he is; the disciples suggest some names, finally Peter asserts: You are the Christ! Jesus replies that such knowledge is not among the people (of whom Jesus is one!) so the revelation must have come from Father God. Today’s verses (21-27) are a continuation of last week (13-20) which end with the admonition to his disciples to reveal to no one that he was the Christ, confirming, as it were, vv. 13-20 and leading directly to today’s lesson about the cross.

To Matthew’s community, the dialogue at vv.21-27 between Peter and Jesus makes perfect sense. This is a good example of the core value in that culture: the concept of honor/shame. Honor is a claim of worth by an individual or a group which requires public acknowledgment of that claim by those present. An individual (or the group leader) must zealously guard against the loss of honor or risk shame. Shame, how-ever, is less the sense of disgrace and more the lack of proper regard for one’s own honor. Public recognition

also assures that honor will continue to be regarded as having the highest social value. It is prized over wealth, even over life itself. Therefore, when one makes a claim of worth, it is automatically challenged by another, and one must vindicate one’s claim or risk shame, that is, risk having an inadequate regard for one’s own worth which, of course, results in loss of stature.

Matthew has Jesus making a claim of honor from the highest source, from God: Jesus must go to Jerusalem8 to suffer and be killed. But God’s plan includes a great-er honor: God will raise Jesus from the dead. Peter challenges this! He has other ideas about Jesus. Recall that to the Judean (Jew), the Messiah was the one who would bring about the group’s liberation – at that time, national and political freedom from subjugation by Rome. Last week, (v.16) Peter called Jesus the Messiah. Today, Peter says, God forbid! Peter wants God to change what Jesus has just finished claiming as a point of honor. Jesus vindicates himself by a riposte;9 he calls Peter, Satan, that is, a tester of loyalties, a tester of obedience, or, the adversary or stumbling block.10 Jesus continues the counter thrust: you see only from the human perspective and not what God is asking. Again, recall that a Gospel is less history and more a testament of faith; Matthew is writing retrospectively. This vignette with Peter is remindful of the scene of Jesus’ Temptations (3:17) during which God names the just baptized Jesus as his beloved Son and immediately Jesus is thrust into the desert where his solidarity is tested three times by the Adversary. Jesus vindicates his honor, counter-thrusting with deft scriptural responses to the Tempter’s challenges. Jesus remains true to the honor God had bestowed upon him.

At 24-26, Jesus again brings us back to kingdom things and not just human things. What humans consider

Sharing the Living Story

honorable – aggrandizing the self, avoiding the cross, saving one’s life, and gaining wealth – is shown to be a lesser honor. What society deems shameful – self-denial, self-sacrifice (taking up the cross), losing life – is defined as honorable. Matthew’s audience must be shocked! Their usual cultural vision is stretched by Jesus’ insistence that they re-orient that vision of their core value.

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God.

Jeremiah puts it: The word of the Lord has brought me derision and reproach all the day. I say to myself … I will speak in his name no more … but then it11 becomes like fire burning in my heart … I grow weary holding it in…

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God.

Paul says: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God.

Since the 18th Sunday, we have followed two revelations made in Matthew’s stories about Jesus inter-acting with people: the crowds, the disciples, individuals. In them, we can see Jesus becoming more and more aware of his being the Messiah even as he does wondrous deeds for the people: sustaining crowds with food; sustaining Peter and the disciples during high winds over the waters; upholding the trust of a non-believing woman by calling forth a healing for her daughter; accepting that he is the Messiah and is there-fore able to give authority to Peter and the other disciples; and finally, today, Jesus shows his own faith, his own solidarity with the Father by stating that he will accept whatever ensues from going into Jerusalem – and he states that it may be what some would call a shame-filled disaster. Perhaps read the psalm verses reflectively, pondering vv.8 and 9.

So What? With the exception of the Paul pericope, the moments in the stories

above show people encountering Jesus on deep levels, the external signs of which were the wonder-deeds, the miracles.

Recall such an encounter – a sacramental moment – in your own life … and give thanks, for it is precious.

1 Matthew was written more than 50 years after the death of Jesus. 2 Matthew 14:22-33 3 Ego eimi, Matthew shows Jesus referring to Exodus 3:14 where there is given the personal name of

the Israelite God as Yahweh (YHWH). 4 Matthew 15: 21-28 5 Faith = solidarity with Jesus and with his God 6 The passive tense indicates that it was God, not humans who did the healing; therefore, Jesus is

assured of his power. 7 The 21st Sunday, Matthew 16:13-20 8 Where historically prophets have been slain 9 A counter-thrust or counter-challenge the use of which is to raise the stakes by beating the claimant 10 Block is an ironic pun; Jesus had just renamed Simon as Peter (Petra, or rock) at v.18 11 it = the word of the Lord

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at 847.382.5300.
