What you need to know
The Graduation Ceremony
June 21, 2017
Chandos Pattison Auditorium

6:00 pm marshalling
(arrive earlier if you want photos with family, friends and staff)
Getting to the Auditorium
take the first exit off SFPR
Regalia (your gown and stuff)
Pick up your gown, stole, cap and tassel in advance –beginning June 13th – from Mr. Donkers
Grad fee must have been paid first
Print your name inside your mortar board (you get to keep it after the ceremony)
Gowns left over on June 21st at 11:30 am?
-- We’ll assume you are NOT walking across the stage
-- We will NOT be bringing it to the auditorium for you
Cap and Gown Photos
Take your family & friend photos BEFORE the ceremony -- you have around 1 week to do so
-- arrive early to take photos with your friends
You will NOT have time to do so AFTER the ceremony (the gowns must be returned immediately after)
Gown Return
Gowns and stoles are collected IMMEDIATELY following ceremony
During the Recessional you will be marshalled back into the Jeremy James Room to return your gown
You MAY NOT leave with your gown after the ceremony
We need to ship them back the next morning and are charged for missing gowns

6:00 p.m. -- begin marshalling in Courtyard (rain? – will marshall inside Jeremy James Room – backstage)

Decorum
The audience is watching YOU – sit up straight, smile, no gum, no texting / games, no iPods -- no exceptions!
this is a very formal ceremony & important event
-- NO woot woot-ing, air horns, whistling, cheering, etc.
NO food or drinks on stage
there is a bathroom backstage for discreet exits
Please remain quiet as everyone’s bios are read
Suggested Attire
Business Casual = stylish dress or skirt (not too short) & blouse
Business Casual = dress pants, shirt & tie
Shoes = stylish but comfortable (you stand from 6:00 –6:45 AND you walk up & down stairs)
Shoes = NO Flip-flops or runners!
Remember – you are returning your gown immediately after the ceremony so what you are wearing under the gown is what you’re wearing home

Exiting of Stage

walk down the stairs stage right and cross back in front of stage in a big loop

follow directions to backstage for portrait

Recessional
audience remains seated while YOU leave the stage
staff will lead grads down aisles of theatre, into auditorium and back to Jeremy James Room for gown collection
NO time for photos in gowns after ceremony – do that BEFORE the ceremony
Convocation Guests
Guests with mobility issues can be dropped off at the front door
doors open at 6:00 p.m. – general seating
doors close at 6:45 for Processional
late guests will wait until YOU are on stage
Please stay for the entire ceremony! (approximately 2.5 hours)
NO SMOKING on school grounds & NO FOOD in facility

Students are responsible for arranging their own ride to Prom
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for Grads
There will be a security check of all grads and guests before they enter the facility
Parents attending the Dinner / Dance
Dinner guests arrive by 6:00 p.m.
Dessert guests arrive by 7:30 p.m.
Dry Grad
There will be a room at Prom to store your clothes / bags / etc.
You CANNOT go to your car to get stuff
Buses will transport you from Newlands to George Preston Arena
You will NOT be allowed to leave early
Make sure that you have arranged for a ride home at 4:00 a.m. from George Preston Arena
For those NOT attending Dry Grad, you need to arrange your own ride home from Prom – pickup by midnight

Grad Walk
Wednesday, June 21st
Grad Pancake Breakfast and Grad Walk for our Grade 12 students.
Grad Walk
Return to their former elementary schools, dressed in their grad gowns and caps, to walk through the hallways lined with current elementary school students and teachers.

Grads who did not attend our catchment schools, including our international students, are encouraged to visit one of Poppy’s catchment schools along with the rest of their grad class.

8:00 – 8:45 am Grad Pancake Breakfast
8:45 – 9:15 am Gowns and Organize by Elementary School
9:20 – 9:35 am Grad Walk through DWP
9:35 – 9:45 am Load buses
10:00 – 11:30 am Leave for Elementary Schools
11:30 am Return to DWP
All graduating grade 12 students participating in the Grad Walk must bring their grad gowns and caps with them to school on the morning of June 21st.

Grad of the Year
Two students (one male, one female) are chosen by the Grad Class as best representing the DW Poppy Class of 2017
One of the most prestigious honours given to our graduates

Grad of the Year Voting
Round 1 (today) – use the grad list provided to select up to 6 males and 6 females who you feel meet these criteria
These results will be tallied and a short list of 6 males and 6 females will be created
Round 2 (next week) – you will select your Top 3 from each list
selection of the candidates and winners will be reviewed by DWP staff
All the candidates will be recognized at Convocation
The winners will be announced at Prom Dinner / Dance
