Written by Prokofiev as an elegy to the tragedies that occurred during WWII, the themes of loss, conflict, and reflection are just as relevant today. Prokofiev wrote, “Now we are rejoicing in our great victory, but each of us has wounds which cannot be healed. One man’s loved ones have perished, another has lost his health. Composed when Mahler was still in his twenties, his first symphony begins transfixed with wonder, … yet tinged with feelings of fate and apprehension. You can practically hear the composer repeat the sounds of the world around him … a crazy quilt of military marches, folk melodies, church bells, and nature itself. The finale begins with a startling crash and concludes with a huge, triumphant climax.

HANDEL Suite No. 1 from Water MusicHANDEL Zadok the Priest HANDEL Dettingen Te Deum
In 1717, England’s King George was suffering in the polls. His political advisors suggested that he do something big to get the people behind him. They came up with the idea of a summer boating party on the Thames, and Handel wrote the music to accompany the festivities. (This spectacle served as the inspiration for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.) The most popular piece of Baroque music today, the Water Music is memorably tuneful and makes fashionable use of the dance forms popular in that day, combining festivity and finesse.
