Hope everyone is having a great time at SOS and remember what ha at SOS. The Coastal Shag Clubs annual Golf Tournament was another huge success. If you were a hole sponsor or donated a raffle prize we want to give you a big round of applause for helping make our tournament a success and if you were a golfer we hope you had fun at our new venue Brick Landing and we are looking forward to having our tournament there again next year. We couldn’t have been successful if we didn’t have golfers and we THANK YOU very much for participating and hopefully you will be back next year and bring another team with you. Join the Coastal Shag Club for Chili’s night on Tuesday September 23rd between 5 and 10 PM. Please come on out and bring a friend, neighbor or co- worker and help us support our local charities. Remember, Chili’s gives us 10% back on all sales. We are still looking for a few volunteers to help with the Shagging Oyster Contest @ the Oyster Festival to be held Sunday October 19th. We Promoting the dance of shag, fabulous beach music and camaraderie between friends and community!! also are in need of contestants for the Shag contest and I know for a fact that we have several couples in our club that are excellent dancers, so download the form from our web site and let’s get dancing. Ken was born and raised in Jacksonville, NC and Cecelia was born in Albany, GA and came to North Carolina as a Marine Corp dependent.
Ken and Cecelia met in their high school years at the beach where Ken would frequently surf. At the time of their first date, Cecelia was a sophomore and Ken was a senior. They did not attend the same high school though. Cecelia was a “base rat” as the military kids were called back then and Ken was a prominent “J.Ville High hunk”.
Camp Lejeune had very good amenities during high school for dependents and the most popular was the teen club. The J’Ville guys would frequently meet with the CLHS girls to court where they were first introduced to the “Shag Dance”, then often referred to as the “Old Bop”. What fun!
Ken graduated from Jacksonville High and was immediately drafted into the Army. At the end of his 2 year service period, he returned home with the rank of Sergeant and started college. While there he ran into an old high school buddy who mentioned Cecelia was around. He immediately looked her up to renew their friendship. One thing led to another and they married.
Ken always had the desire to be a State Trooper, therefore decided to make application. They turned him away twice for having long hair and after several short to shorter haircuts he was finally accepted. They were stationed in Raeford, NC where Ken finished his 30 year career and retirement. They had two children who grew up and finished their high school years there before going off to college. Once they became “Empty Nesters”, they decided to move to the beach. They have been blessed with three grandchildren, whom they spoil endlessly.
Cecelia worked over the years as an Executive Secretary and Human Resources Manager. Once Ken retired and they moved to Holden Beach, she began a career as a Real Estate Broker. Ken and Cecelia enjoy volunteering and enjoying local community activities.
As far as the “Shag Dance”, it’s been said that we dance the same as we always have for the past 45+ years. Ken and Cecelia enjoy meeting, socializing, and watching the various shag dances that others do so well.
