BACKLOG DEMAND PASSES MILLION MACHINES

Investigations conducted among leading coinmen convinces that

the backlog demand for new equipment at this time, in every divi-

sion of the coin machines industry, ranging from peanut machines

all the way to phonos, exceeds 1,000,000 machines. These will be

snatched out of the market within 12 months (if they can be pro-duced in that length of time) after the manufacturers are allowedto once again return to former products production. And this tre-mendous backlog is increasing every day. As machines gradually

disappear frcm the present market, due to a variety of reasons, the trade is uncovering the greatest sales market in all the his-tory of this industry.

It is also interesting to note that the majority of the firms thruout the coun-

try are in position to accept delivery of new equipmont on a cash basis. Very few be-lieve that they will require financing. Yet outstanding finance firms are becomingmore and still more interested in the field and they believe that their interests willeventually run into many millions of dollars when the field is back to normal.

This million machines backlog demand is an extremely conservative estimate. It

is based on tho need of 2 machines for each of the 500,000 locations in the nationwhich are reported to handle music. Aside from this there are an estimated additional

250,000 or so locations in the country where music hasn't as yet been accepted andwhich handle othor typos of equipment. It is also well to remember that the averagelocation in cosmopolitan areas has approximately 8 machines of various types in it,ranging from scales thru music, amusement, service and into bulk merchandisers.

If figured on this basis the need would easily rise to over 1,500,000 machines. But the belief is general that a great many machines will be retained for much over12 months after new machines production has started, and that these will create asecond backlog of orders as great as was the first. The machine changes that willcome about promise to induce coinmen to remove their older equipment oven before itstime is up.

The manufacturers are thoreforc entering into an era where they can plan thelargest nroduction lines of their careers on machines that click. Replacements willbo rop id to moot tho nood for change as well as the demand of tho locations themsel-ves, a.g new machines roach into each individual neighborhood, each village, oachtown.

New blood is also expected to make a deep dent in the figuring of a great manyin this industry. Thcso men who will be entering into this business on on oasicr andsofter basis than those who arc in it today did, will prove that they can get intospots formerly thought to be impregnable. The present ops, to defend themselves andto proporly meet this sort of competition, will havo to purchase the same typo of

equipment which this new blood will attempt to introduce into their locations.

Tho spoed of business in this industry today will seem like a snail's pace whentho war is over. INSURING LOCAT IONSFor many months The Cash Box has been working with the trade to help arrange ways

and means to insure present locations remaining the locations of those men who workedso hard thru these hectic and difficult wartime days to maintain their locations. TheCash Box was first to warn of tho possible great influx of new blood into this indus-try after the war and to caution tho trade to protcc't itself by using locations as thewodgo to got the new equipment first, thereby forestalling location loss to new blood. The Cash Box also proposed that commissions, especially to the average spots, be cut

will help accumulate the necessary cash reserve for the men now engaged in this indus-

try, these men who are working so hard under so many difficulties to maintain them-

selves in this business at this time, so as to assure themselves getting the newequipment first and thereby maintaining their present locations in the post war era.

From Miami, Florida this past week comes the news that a city ordinance has just

been passed (as an emergency measure) which freezes all present automatic phono loca-

tions. One phono for every 265 population. The Miami phono trade believe they are

now in good control of their locations. This will not in any fashion, these men say,

affect their purchases of new equipment. In fact, they eagerly look forward to thenew equipment now that these locations are really their own and no uncertainty existsabout how many machines they should buy. They claim this reason as the biggest in-ducement for their getting large quantities of the new equipment first. If thereare, among these mon, believers that this emergency city ordinance will prevent the

necessity of purchasing new equipment in tho post war era they certainly are simpleminded business men. In tho post war era these sort of men aro going to find thatmost of the promotional effort of the larger organizations that will enter into the

industry will be directed at the location and the public and that both these most im-

portant units in the merchandising equation will be pepped up to demand the new typeof equipment which the factories will produce. It is one thing to '’freeze" down loca-tions but quite another to freeze the machines in the locations.

It is the belief among many that this newest wrinkle in insuring locations is the

best yet. Perhaps here is the answer to what others thruout the country have beenseeking. Perhaps it is best to get all city fathers to arrange ordinances as "emer-gency measures” (which cut thru the red tape of many council readings) and freeze pres-ent locations by population quotas (at so much per license per annum). If this is the

case then all ops everywhere in the country should instantly plunge into getting thissame kind of action. But what does it avail to freeze numbers of machines even bypopulation quotas when new types of locations are bound to arise after the war andwill population remain dormant? It is best to remain with the locations as is underany ordinance that is to be written. It seems that this Miami ordinance has a greatmany sound qualities to it.

We recommend that copies of this Miami ordinance be obtained because we feelthat this may open a new path of thought for tho men who now form tho nucleus of thisbusiness. Those men who have stuck to their guns thru thick and thin; who have remain-ed in this business and have not put their tails between their legs and run away. Thos^

men aro determined to outlast this war. They will become the nucleus upon which theindustry will build to greatness in the post war era. Those are the men, the men whoheld the fort, whan we feel should be given every consideration first. And perhapsthis idea, which was originated and put to a resultful conclusion by Miami’s musiccoinmen, is the answer to any one way in which those men can protect themselves.

NEW FEDERAL TAXESA few issues ago The Cash Box warned that new and higher federal taxes were in

the making, not only for this industry but for all industries and individuals, regard-less of political considerations and interference. Now cones the report that Rep.Robert L. Doughton of North Carolina who heads the Ways and Means Committee stillthinks it possible to write a now revenue bill, with higher levies, by January 1st,notwithstanding threatened delays because of conflict between the treasury and con-gressional tax advisers. Rep. Doughton said that his committeo, under a speed-upprogram, would open public hearings September 20th on means to finding new revenue forwartime needs.

With all due respect to Samuel (Curley) Robinson, one of this industry’s mostenergetic and sincere workers, we do not believe that his appeal to reduce coin mach-ines taxes will today have much offect upon Rep. Doughton and tho rest of the membersof the Ways and Means Committee. Many letters have come to us from "Curley" and we

believe that his work is so extremely commendable that were this industry to get to-gether and to give him all honors this would not sufficiently repay for what he has al-

ready accomplished. Suffice it to say here and now that we hope "Curley" will contin-ue to work in the best interests of all the trade. His job, when he goes on to Wash-ington, will now be NOT TO GET COIN MACHINE TAXES INCREASED above what they are at

present. In fact, to try and hold them where they are now, for the Ways and Means Com-

mitted are reported to have many increases in mind for all industries. The figures"Cnrley" has gathered together these past months may prove to be the necessary and

clinching argument to prevent further federal tax increase.

The trade has overcane a great many headachos which it never before had to

contend with. It is riding along on the crest of this wartime boom and there is nodoubt will ride even moro wide, high and handsome when the post war ora arrives. This

is the time for tho trade to arrange for someone to work with the federal and local

governments to prevent any further taxation, and to equalize all present taxation

thruout the country. The big job that this industry has before it is to get these

tax makers to realize that certain types of equipment can only stand for a certain

amount of taxation and yet allow the men in this industry the kind of livlihood they

need under these wartime conditions. This industry continues to pay unequitable taxes

to cities, counties, states and the federal government, and will continue to do so vn-

til the day when one outstanding figure arises who will lead the way to a better under-

standing for all in this industry,

SOFT DRINK SUPPLYDrink vendors are getting greatest action since their conception. And this ac-

tion continues to grow heavier daily. One reason for this is now noted in report just

issued that bottled soft drink consumption this year will be cut down to 11-g- BILLIONbottles whereas in *42 over 16 BILLION bottles were consumed. Armed services are re-

ported to be consuming over 2 BILLION bottles annually. Reason for cut is reportedto be lack of caps, bottles and gasoline for delivery. This places greater stressthan ever before on drink vendors. Many now investigating this field. Outstandingbottling firms believe this field ripe for greater promotion in post war era. Warhas helped place drink vendor field, among others, in the limelight and is attractingsome of the nation* s largest manufacturers and most powerful financiers. Watch theaction in this field outstrip all other merchandiser fields in the post war era,

EDUCATIONIt is interesting to note the general awakening in the trade to the greater pos-

sibilities in the post war era, A great many of the coinmen realize that the publicgenerally and especially the armed services are each day becoming more familiarizedwith all types of coin operated equipment. The Army and Navy is carrying its enjoy-ment of the automatics field far into the comers of the earth and thereby opening a

tremendous export market.

One leader explains that phonos in Army camps occupy the greatest part of thesparetime of the men. He also claims that this is true of the war plants where menand women are becoming more familiar with merchandising equipment as well as phonos. He goes further to state that the amusement games division is gaining the greatestattention during lunch hours and after working hours with the play daily growinggreater.

It is significant to the members of this industry that the public and armed for-ces are today as well educated to coin operated equipment as are the men engaged inthis industry. It is also because of this that many believe this industry will enjoygreater profits in the post war era if the manufactories will continue on the theorythat present types of machines (as far as method of playing them is concerned) be con-tinued,

"But", as one coinman writes us, "it is necessary for the manufacturers to stim-ulate new interest in this industry by arranging to bring the public completely newand modernized innovations of the present type equipment so that when the public andits officials see this equipment for the first time they will consider it entirely newand completely disconnected from former machines that were run in the territory, andpossibly banned. We shall never" he continues, "be able to do as great a job afterthe war is over, unless we get the kind of equipment we can bring to the locations andcall 'new* and not just a revamp of the equipment we are now running,"

SECOND WARTIME CONFERENCEThe number of signed forms signifying desire to attend the Second Wartime Confer

ence continue to pile up in amazing quantity each day. Many have talked to us endwhile speaking have nonchalantly stated, "Hell, I don’t have to fill that out. Youknow 1*11 be there". But, that isn’t so, Wc are confining this Second Wartime Confer-ence to members of this industry exclusively, just as we did the First Wartime Conference, and to assure that only such men get into the conference rooms, tickets of ad-mission will be issued. It is best therefore to fill out the form and mail it imme-diately so that we know you desire to participate in the creation of seme sort of or-ganization to act as a common meeting ground for all organizations and individualscomprising this industry and to be a purely beneficient organization, non-polit ical,

non-profit, mutual organization.

Remember, too, that in arranging for tho meeting rooms some idea of the numberof persons who will attend must be obtained far in advance so that whatever hotel in

Chicago is chosen the hotel will know what rooms to set aside. If you haven’t yetfilled out your application form do so now. Remember, that you should also obtain the

signatures of everyone of your friends who are in the coin machinos industry and usethe forms that are attached to each issue for the benefit. If you desire any numberof extra forms for your mailings, they will be furnished to you free of charge as wasagreed upen at the First Wartime Confcronce held at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria in NewYork City, Many offered to place these forms in their regular mailings to the trade,Same of these men who so stated they would on the floor at this first meet haven’t as

yet availed themselves of this opportunity, 7fe hope to hear from them. A tremendousmailing went out this past week all over the nation. We hope to hear frem this mail-ing with great results.

Due to war conditions, manufacturers’ identities to their product have'been dropped in most cases.

Since practically all equipment now being purchased is used,a machine is only as good as the firm that sells it.

MARCH, 1942.MARKETIN THE SEPTEMBERPRICES LISTED AREMARKET PRICES,

CEPRICES APPEARED7, 1943 I SSUE.CURRENT WEEK’S

f

IMPORTANTThe Confidential Price Lists are to be read as follows: First price listed is lowest price for

file week; Second price listed is highest price for the week; Where only one price appearsthis should be considered lowest price.

Many times, wide differences appear in the high and low prices of certain equipment.Like ony true reporter The Confidential Price Lists can only feature the market prices

as they are quoted. The Confidential Price Lists act exactly the same as the market quota-tion board at the Stock Exchange—posting the prices exactly as they are quoted for eachweek, regardless of how much they may seem to be out of line. Some machine prices donot change for months. The Confidential Price Lists, rather than show no price for theweek, retain the last known quotations for such equipment so that the subscriber at least

has the last known quoted prices as a basis to work with. Prices continue to be very widelydivergent these days. Someone on the West Coast may feel a certain machine worth $150.00whereas someone on the East Coast may think it worth but $75.00. Of course, condition, serial,

appearance, demand, territory, quantity, etc.^nust all be taken into consideration. TheConfidential Price Lists report each quotation exactly as it is made and depend on thesubscriber to make average price adjustment to fit the peculiarities of his own territory.

CODECHECK THIS CODE CAREFULLY. BECOME ACQUAINTED WITHEACH ONE OF THE CODE NUMBERS AND WHAT THEY SIGNIFY.THESE CODE NUMBERS APPEAR IN FRONT OF THE NAME OF EACHMACHINE.

6—

Means no prices quoted for this machine for past two weeks.7

Means no prices quoted for this machine for past three weeks.

8—

Means no prices quoted for this machine for past four weeks or longer.
