SHEPHERD’S VOICE

Let’s take a look at our readings on this special day. From the Book of Wisdom 3:1-9. These words offer profound comfort to anyone experiencing loss and grief. To the “foolish” that lack faith, death appears to be the final word and oblivion the fate of those who have died. But, in fact, the souls of the just are with God, not destroyed, but living in peace. “If before men….”suggests that this truth is not patently obvious; and it isn’t. Such vision requires the eyes of faith, which the foolish don’t possess.

With faith we see that even if “they are chastised a little” (some hear in that a suggestion of Purgatory) their ultimate reward is assured, for having purified them like “gold in the furnace,” God will make them shine like “sparks” from a raging fire. Often applied to the martyrs, these verses also speak of the witnesses given by ordinary lives marked by the love of God and others.

For the just, the sufferings of life are but a means of purification that a cleansing God uses to prepare them for “their time of visitation” (that is, judgment). After their judgment, they will understand truth and receive grace and mercy in abundance. They will even “judge” nations. Wisdom offers “hope full of immortality,” promising us who are left behind that the faithful loved ones we’ve lost await us in glory. Nothing is guaranteed unless we have surrendered to God and become “his holy ones.” But it is never too late to pray that those we love are among God’s “elect” and to win for ourselves that same hope of immortality.

Our Responsorial Psalm 23 is a much loved prayer of confidence whose image of the dark valley represents all our fears and unknowns regarding death. But there is no need to fear, we are led by the Lord to a place of rest and joyful fullness of life in the house of the Lord. “Though I walk in the valley of darkness, I fear no evil, for you are with me.” This is because also “the Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

Our second reading from Romans 5:5-11 – God’s love for us is unconditional not like we usually do as humans. We love if certain conditions are met – “If you do this, I will love you.” God’s way as St. Paul says – “God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” God’s love is given freely-all we need do is accept it. God’s love for us is constant and reliable. God didn’t wait for us to “clean up our act,” or “get it all together” before saving us. No, God took the initiative and completely transformed us. God reached right into our unworthiness and made us worthy. The “hope” of which St. Paul speaks is assured. We need not to worry. Christ gave his life for us even when we still steeped in sin and wholly unworthy of such extravagant love. And if God did all that before we were justified, Paul says, Imagine how much more God will do for us now that we live in the grace and reconciliation Christ won for us through his death.

In our Gospel from John 3:37-40 – it is so consoling to hear Jesus assuring us and those who have gone ahead of us – “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me…and this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.” Again much more for us now, this should give us hope even in the face of death to hear Jesus say – “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day.”

Surely we know that to come to Jesus means to have faith in Him now. A call to faith in Jesus, means faith in him, his teachings, and his miraculous signs; the great mystery of the resurrection of all believers, a resurrection of which we acquire a foretaste here on earth but which we will experience fully only in the Kingdom; and Jesus’ hope-filled assertion that God desires all human beings to come to eternal life. Let us believe that everyone who has belonged to Christ will be raised to “eternal life…on the last day.”

Your shepherd,

Fr. Roni Villamor
