At last we have seen some warm weather – let’s hope it continues into summer.Good to see that the Sunday bus service into Weymouth is back for now – please make use of it; it is also now half hourly as opposed to hourly as it was last year.We have a new film and theatre section in Contact this month. May be there is the possibility of a theatre/film club for people in Chickerell. How many people have partners or family members who do not share the same taste for evenings out and would appreciate joining with others and pooling transport costs? There are quite a few music events coming up as you will see this month. There is an article about a concert at the Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth in June which will feature light music and entertainment and it is all for two good causes. One of the charities is Read Easy, which teaches people to read who missed out at school; the other is for Holy Trinity Church’s roof restoration. Tickets will be available later this month. Finally, well done to everyone who took part in the litter pick and well done to Brian for this and for the walks he organises every month.

SUCCESS FOR RESCHEDULED LITTER PICK From Brian: “The litter team’s strategy of ‘less people dropping litter and more people picking up litter’ has improved the visual litter on our streets & countryside over the years. However there are concerns; people are still dropping litter and tossing litter from the car. “With extra litter pick helpers this year we collected: 4th March: 10 bags of litter; 8th April: 33 bags of litter -making a grand total of 43 bags.“Fly tipping objects were also found which need not be there in the first place. If anyone notices fly tipping, please report it by ringing 01305 221040. If left it will only encourage more people to think that it is ‘OK’ for them to offend.“Our many thanks go to the 15 volunteers who achieved this result: ‘Residents doing a little to make a big difference.”

Brian 770678 *******************************************************************************************CONCERT FOR CHARITY: There will be a charity concert at Holy Trinity Church on Friday June 8th to aid the church restoration fund and the charity Read Easy. It was also where Dorset novelist Thomas Hardy sat as a magistrate and where he gained inspiration for many of his stories and characters. The hall was built in the 18th century to replace the run down previous courthouse which had become so bad the court had to move temporarily to the Antelope Hotel (now Antelope Walk). The new Shire Hall, designed by architect Thomas Hardwick and built from 1796 to 1797, went on to become the centre of law and order and government in Dorchester for more than 200 years; all of which will be celebrated in the new visitor attraction.Visitors will follow a route through the building to the cells, courtroom and Grand Jury Room. There will also be a reception, shop, cafe and ‘learning and training space’ in the former West Dorset District Council chamber.Once opened it will be run by a new charity, The Shire Hall Trust. For more information see www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/shirehallproject*******************************************************************************************WALKING NETBALL: You may have heard about Walking Football, but how about Walking Netball? NEWS & EVENTS EXTRA…NEWS FROM DORSET TRADING STANDARDSCHARITIES PREFERENCE: If you are fed up with unsolicited calls, texts, emails and post from charities asking for donations, the new Fundraising Preference Service (FPS) could help. Visit the website: https://www.fundraisingpreference.org.uk where you can choose to stop communications from a selected charity. Dorset Trading Standards says: “You will need to identify the charity/ies you no longer want to hear from. The easiest way is to use the registered charity’s number, which should be displayed on all promotional material. If you cannot find the charity number, you can also search using the charity’s name. To confirm your request, you will need either an email address or a mobile telephone number, which will enable a confirmation code to be sent to you that you will need to enter later. If you need help to complete the online form, there is a telephone helpline service: call 0300 3033 517. You can also register via the same helpline number. You will be asked to provide your name and relevant contact information so that you can be matched to the charity’s records and the communication can be stopped. Once all details have been provided and the request submitted, the FPS will send an automatic email to the charity/ies, with a 28 day deadline to remove your details from direct marketing lists. You will need to specify every charity you want to block – you won't be able to opt out of all charity contact. For advice on this, or to report something to Trading Standards, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06.”*******************************************************************************************DOLLS FAIR: Portwey Dolls House Group is holding a Dolls house and Craft Fair on Saturday 12th May from10am to 4pm at the Salvation Army Hall, Weymouth DT4 8NS. NATURE NOTES – What has been seen in Chickerell: While the weather was still decidedly unlike spring it was still possible to see some blossom in Chickerell, notably of course the Blackthorn blossoms, attractive but long seen as coming into flower too early; a harbinger of spring that has not ‘yet sprung’ and therefore unlucky to have in the house. Hawthorn blossoms, on the other hand, are seen as evoking the first days of summer and fertile days to come; they are now starting to bloom. As we go to press there have been no swallows seen in Chickerell, although they have been spotted in Weymouth. Meanwhile the little flocks of sparrows have been busy in the sun taking dust baths by the side of Putton Lane. The Goldfinches continue to chatter beautifully. Top spots in Chickerell Downs have been spring arrivals Black Caps and Willow Warblers. The latter a small, yellow-green bird with a ‘falling trill’ of a song. Finally darting low and zipping down behind a garage in Lower Way on the first sunny day was a stunning Sparrowhawk. *******************************************************************************************

In this case the businesses were advised to contact the business development officer at West Dorset for advice and support.A request for information was also received regarding the Chickerell Town Council offer of a site for a new GP surgery following planning approval for 300 extra homes between School Hill and the old Flood’s Yard.On behalf of the town council Coun John Worth stated it was the green open space opposite the Willowbed Hall, as the land that had been originally allocated in consultation with the health service was ‘insufficient for the size of health centre for the area’ and there was ‘very little’ other land in public ownership. He added that residents who responded to the neighbourhood plan questionnaire were very much in favour of a health centre.

NEWS REPORT FROM CHICKERELL TOWN COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING – MAY – continued

Plans for Camping site at Buckland Ripers: Councillors were told there had been objections to this proposal from local residents who were concerned over increased traffic and pedestrians when the area lacked pavements, streetlights and amenities such as a pub, shop or public transport. There were also worries over possible noise, flooding, drainage and the impact on a neighbouring site of nature conservation. Some councillors felt a town council decision should not be made until more information was made available including how many tents would be on the site. The majority, however, felt the application should be recommended for refusal.Plan to extend cottage: Councillors were told there had been some concern raised about a plan to extend a historic cottage on Chickerell Road next to the ranges. The plan was for a two storey front and side extension and a single storey rear extension plus front porch. It was felt the extension was significant so approval was recommended subject to a note regarding concerns over possible overlooking of neighbouring properties.Local government reorganisation: County Councillor Jean Dunseith reported on the progression of the reorganisation of Dorset and said Chickerell would have two councillors on the new unitary authority. It would also be classed as South Dorset, not West Dorset. The main impact of this would be on the new area planning committees. Glennie Way concerns: Coun Dunseith had been contacted over concerns about road safety issues for pedestrians crossing Glennie Way by the Willowbed Hall. A zebra crossing was requested. Councillors were told a ‘lollipop lady’ is under consideration and a follow up survey by the travel safety officer for the area is awaited.Car parking outside local schools: Correspondence from local residents read out at the meeting included two letters over parking. One concerned parking causing an obstruction to residents living next to Budmouth and the other related to a parent who stated her daughter had been narrowly missed by a car mounting the pavement outside the Primary Academy. It was agreed letters from the council to the headteachers should be sent. A request for the Parking Enforcement Team to enforce the traffic regulations would also be made.Building materials on junction: Another letter from a local resident expressed concern over building materials being left and creating an ‘eyesore’ at the junction of Green Lane and Putton Lane. Councillors were told the landowner was taking action to deal with this matter.*******************************************************************************************

Nick’s Notes on the Night SkyThe brightness of a star is measured by its magnitude (which means, in ancient Greek, its ‘importance’!) and the smaller the number the brighter the star; so a star with magnitude of two is brighter than one with a magnitude of six. There have been some refinements since the original catalogues (drawn up 2,000 years ago), and it was ‘standardised’ in the 19th century, which has resulted in four stars (and only four) now having negative magnitudes. One of them is Arcturus, a orangey-red star that is, at this time of the year, one of the first stars you see as the sun sets. Look in the east just after sunset and you’ll see it shining through the darkening sky, with its colour getting easier to see as the sky gets darker. You can also use the adage ‘Arc to Arcturus’ to find it later in the night, by following the arc of the handle of the big dipper downwards and the first bright star you’ll come to is Arcturus.

Arcturus itself is the brightest star in the constellation of Boötes, the Bear Driver, or Herdsman (the name Boötes means Bearkeeper in Greek) and is often depicted as a hunter chasing the ‘Big Bear’ (Ursa Major) across the sky. It is also the pointer to some wonderful parts of the sky. Just off to its ‘left’ is the constellation Coma Berenices. This constellation is supposed to represent the golden hair of a queen of Egypt, and, on a dark night, is a lovely site, with a cluster of closely associated stars, hazily visible with the naked eye but a wonderful sight in binoculars.Going the other way is a vaguely ‘cup shaped’ constellation with a bright star sat, more or less, at the base of the cup. This is Corona Borealis, or the Northern Crown, a rather apt name given the shape. In some myths it is the crown of Ariadne, a tragic heroinein Greek myths and is a perfectly formed constellation that looks, for a change, like its name suggests!
