Liturgical Schedule Gospel Reflection

April 26, 2015

4th Sunday of Easter

Acts 4:8–12; Ps 118:1, 8–9, 21–23, 26, 28, 29 1 Jn 3:1–2; Jn 10:11–18

Like Jesus did, his disciples faced rejection and per-secution for their beliefs. But also like Jesus, Luke tells us that they were “filled with the Holy Spirit”, who assisted them in their trials. Standing before the reli-gious authorities of Jerusalem, they are challenged for their behavior. In their defense Peter replies that the good works they perform are done “in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead”. The apostles’ ex-ample is offered to encourage Luke’s community and us as well. We are called to stand firm in our faith even in the face of opposition. In First John we are reminded of our identity as “the children of God”. Because of the incarnation, we share in God’s life. But, we are told, this is just the beginning: “what we shall be has not yet been re-vealed”; created in the image of God and called to share the divine life, we will one day “be like him”. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us, “I am the good shepherd”. Most of us in the United States today have never encountered a shepherd, but the image was common enough to Jesus’s audience. He draws a distinction between a shepherd who owns the sheep and a “hired man, … whose sheep are not his own”; the man who “works for pay … has no concern for the sheep” when his own safety is at stake. Jesus goes on to speak of “other sheep that do not belong to this fold,” who must also be cared for and “will hear my voice”. The good shepherd cares for all his sheep and ultimately will bring them all together so that “there will be one flock, one shepherd.” God’s desire is to gather us all together. We are called to love all “the sheep,” even those of another flock, for God al-ready loves them. For Reflection: Do I consciously perform good deeds with an awareness that I am doing them through the grace of God? Am I comfortable with the idea of “other sheep” also belonging to God’s flock?

Generations of Faith

The Conversation

Continues. . .

Join us on Thursday mornings for conversation, fellowship and coffee.

We cover current events, hot topic issues in the church, new (and old) DVD releases on church top-

ics and never is there any such thing as a stupid question!

We meet in the Faith Formation Office in the school building around 9:15 AM. All adults in the parish are

welcome!

Planning to Marry? The Diocese requires that cou-ples planning to marry begin their preparation with the church at least six months in advance. Couples must contact Father Ed to begin 232-2713. All-Day Marriage Preparation sessions will be of-fered in the parish on June 21st. Couples may contact Jody and Dan Bohney to register for one of the sessions: [email protected] 219-696-4030.

Exploring the Trinity Join us for the final Generations of Faith session of the season on the Trinity on May 17th at 10 AM or May 18th at 6 PM in the Gym. We will be taking a look at modern theologians and what they have to say about this topic and looking at the history that got us to where we are today. All in the parish are welcome. We open with a meal and opening presentation, then we discuss the top-ic in a more hands on manner in age group break outs. If this is your first session, we wave the fee!
