Statement by the Louisiana

Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops strongly

supports the Love Life Amendment, which would

successfully amend the Louisiana constitution and thereby

continue to strengthen our commitment to end abortion in

our state. Citizens of our state will have the opportunity to

affirmatively state that they “Love Life” on November 3—

the same day as our presidential election—by favoring this

amendment.

As Catholics, we are called to ensure that life is indeed

valued and that the dignity of all is upheld. This is the

foundational principle of our social teaching and must be

intentionally considered in all that we do.

Passage of the Love Life Amendment would have a dual

effect. Primarily, it will ensure that the state of Louisiana

cannot establish a right to abortion at present or if Roe v.

Wade is overturned in the future. Secondly, it will prohibit

the funding of abortion through taxpayer dollars within our

constitution. Without such an amendment the invalidation of

the many anti-abortion laws we have all advocated so

strongly for in Louisiana remains a possibility.

The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops therefore

enthusiastically supports the Love Life Amendment, and

encourages all to approach this initiative with a formed

conscience and a commitment to defend the sanctity of

human life and uphold the dignity of all people.

National Vocation Awareness Week National Vocation Awareness Week is an annual

week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United

States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood,

diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and

education, and to renew our prayers and support for those

who are considering one of these particular vocations.

During the week of November 1-7, we encourage all

Catholics to take time to pray for vocations; reflect on our

own vocation and strengthen our personal relationship with

Christ; and educate our young people about the importance

of silent prayer and taking the time to truly listen to God's

voice in our hearts.

May we use this week to especially keep in prayer those

clergy, religious, and consecrated seculars closest to us,

and express to them our support for their vocation, their

ministry and their lives: Fr. Joseph, Fr. Kevin,

Deacon Steve, Deacon Tim, Sister Julia, Sister Loan,

Sister Elizabeth and Sister Mai.

The Annual Giving Tree

The first Sunday of Advent is November 29. Advent is a time of prayerful and patient

preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth

over 2000 years ago. It is also a time to

prepare our hearts for a greater interior

reception of Jesus’ presence now as well as prayerful

anticipation for Jesus’ Second Coming. We observe this

season through acts of prayer, penance, and—not least of

all—almsgiving.

Each week throughout Advent, parishioners are invited

to take an ornament from our annual Giving Tree. Each

week’s ornament offers a means to share our blessings

with others. As we will see, by giving we also receive.

First week of Advent – November 28-29

These ornaments will have a name or description of

someone for whom you are asked to purchase a gift. The

names of those in need come from Hope House, an

archdiocesan ministry serving the poor in the St. Thomas/

Irish Channel community. Please bring your gift to church

on the weekend of December 5-6.

Second week of Advent – December 5-6 This week’s ornament specifies a particular type of canned

good or household item needed to stock our Food Pantry

operated by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Boxes will

be available in the back of church on the weekend of

December 12-13 to receive your food gifts.

Third week of Advent – December 12-13 This week, we select an ornament that cites a quotation

from Scripture. Place this ornament in a prominent place in

your home, perhaps the dinner table, where you can read it

often, reflect and pray on it, and share in the family circle

just what it means to us and to our lives.

Fourth week of Advent – December 19-20 Our holiday preparations should be all completed. Take the

time now to reflect on the birth of Jesus and let His love

shed light on all that you do in the year ahead.

It is extremely important when you select a gift ornament

that you make your purchase as soon as possible. We

want to ensure that all gifts are returned so that no one is

without a gift.

Please wrap the gift securely, taping the ornament to the

front with the name showing, and place it under the tree

or bring it to the Parish Center.

Not Too Late for RCIA Life has many storms—distressful relationships, jobs, poor

health; situations where we feel our powerlessness. If you

know someone, unbaptized or baptized in a non-Catholic

Christian tradition, who is searching for strength and

understanding to weather such squalls, invite them to seek

the perspective the Catholic Church offers. RCIA sessions

are held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish

Center. Please contact Trevor Huster at 888-0703 or

[email protected] for more information on RCIA (for

teens and adults) or RCIC (for children ages 7-13).

The Archdiocese of New Orleans is inviting you to

participate in the annual day of Catholic giving on

Tuesday, December 1 (Giving Tuesday), a global day of

giving. Secure, tax-deductible donations will be accepted

on iGiveCatholic.org during a 24 hour period, and

St. Edward School will be participating along with many

other Catholic parishes, schools, ministries and not-for-

profit organizations.

St. Edward School celebrates its 55th Anniversary this

year, and what better time to support them than by giving

back through your generosity at this event. Many of us can

look back to the excellent education and moral

development that our sons, daughters, grandchildren or

other relatives received in the past with Sister Mary de

Lourdes and her faculty. Please consider donating back so

that this excellent education can continue with Dr. Tom

Becker and his faculty, some of whom have been here

many years and some who are also former St. Edward

graduates.

To donate, go to www.iGiveCatholic.org on Tuesday, December 1, from 12:01 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. You will

need a credit card to donate online. The minimum donation

is $25.00. St. Edward the Confessor School will be most

appreciative of any donation you can make.

Advanced giving will be available from November 16

through November 30. Be sure to check the “I’m a new

donor” box, as we will receive a prize if we have the most

new donors.

Save the date: Tuesday, December 1st.

Eucharistic Adoration

October and November bring thoughts of Fall. As the

seasons change, we are invited to change as well; not just

outer changes like our clothing or appearances, but inner

changes of the heart. The word “FALL” can remind us of

how that kind of change happens–by falling on our knees

and falling more in love with Jesus! We can change, not

by our own power and strength, but with the help of Jesus.

We can fall away from sin in repentance and turn to God in

adoration; fall away from complaining and turn to God in

thanksgiving for His blessings; turn away from self-

seeking and ask for the grace to do His will; fall away from

anxiety and grow in peace. Jesus can change us from the

inside out. Now, that is real change!

We have all had to deal with changes recently. You are

invited to try a new fresh approach to leave behind the old

and discover new grace, strength and peace. Begin your

change of heart by visiting Jesus and spending time with

Him in our Adoration Chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays

and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. We are in need of

another committed adorer on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and

Fridays at 2 p.m. Please call Sheila Butler at 889-0334.
