HISTORY OF DARDENNE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

1819-2016

At a meeting at the home of John Naylor, in the small community of Dardenne Prairie in St. Charles County, Missouri, on September 18, 1819, a small group of Christians assembled “for the purpose of forming, by Divine permission, a church established on the Presbyterian discipline and based on the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as illustrated by the American Confession of Faith.” The Rev. Charles Robinson, a frontier missionary who had been sent to Missouri by the Young Men’s Mission Society of New York, presided as the organizing minister and upon examination of their faith admitted eight charter members thereby establishing the Dardenne Presbyterian Church. These original members were: Mr. and Mrs. John Naylor, and son James Naylor, Mrs. Elizabeth McPheeters, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Zumwalt, and Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Tucker. Mr. John Naylor became the first ruling elder having previously been ordained in Washington, Kentucky. In 1823 on land given by Andrew Zumwalt, a plain log church was constructed on a hill on the north side of Dardenne Creek. The location is about three miles southeast of the present church site. Between the years of 1845 and 1849, near the same site, this log structure was replaced by a “commodious” brick church. During the Civil war, the relatively new brick structure and original log church were destroyed by fire in early April of 1862, and arson was strongly suspected. No one knew who was to blame. For several years the congregation worshiped in mild weather outdoors in a primitive structure made of posts covered with limbs and branches and known as the “Arbor.” In bad weather the congregation met in homes, neighboring schoolhouses, and for a period of time, shared a church building with a Methodist congregation at Mechanicsville. In 1868 the present stone building, or “Rock Church” was erected on land given by Judge and Mrs. Barton Bates near the center of the Dardenne Prairie on the Old Trail or Boonslick Road—now Highway “N”. It is said that the limestone was quarried from the bluffs of the Dardenne Creek and hauled to the church site. During this time, Adam Lamb, originally from Scotland, came to Dardenne Prairie to teach the Watson children and others in the neighborhood. 1819 – 1827 Rev. Charles Robinson Founding Minister

1844 – 1888 Rev. Thomas Watson 1st Installed Pastor 1892 – 1925 Rev. Samuel McCluer Watson 2nd Installed Pastor 1970 – 1973 Rev. Charles M. Bunce 3rd Installed Pastor 1973 – 1997 Rev. Thomas L. Sale 4th Installed Pastor 1996 – 2007 Rev. Dr. Gary Myers 5th Installed Pastor 2007 – 2009 Rev. Dr. Ian Lamont 6th Installed Pastor 2013 – Present Rev. Dr. Larry Maley 7th Installed Pastor During the interim years there were twenty-one Stated Supply pastors. However, special attention needs to be given to Dr. Herbert Watson and Dr. Stuart Salmon who served as Stated Supply and were the driving force for the rejuvenation of Dardenne during the period of 1956 thru1967. The Rock Church was renovated in the 1960’s with the removal of the wood burning stove and replaced with a gas stove among other new amenities. Also the wooden narthex was replaced with a new brick entrance and colonnaded porch. In 1972 further renovation included removal of the wooden pews and the addition of the chancel rail, pulpit, carpeting, and additional mechanical and electrical work. Also, the first portion of Watson Hall was also erected.

10,000 Reasons

The sun comes up. It’s a new day dawning. It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes.

(chorus) Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul. Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I’ll worship Your holy name.

You’re rich in love, and You’re slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing; ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. (chorus)

And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come; still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore! (chorus)

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms. What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms.

(refrain) Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms. Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, leaning on the everlasting arms. O how bright the path grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms. (refrain)

What have I to dread, what have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the everlasting arms. (refrain)

I’ll Fly Away

Some glad morning when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away to a home on God’s celestial shore. I’ll fly away!

(chorus) I’ll fly away, O glory! I’ll fly away! When I die, hallelujah by and by. I’ll fly away!

When the shadows of this life have grown, I’ll fly away. Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away. (chorus)

Just a few more weary days and then I’ll fly away to a land where joys shall never end. I’ll fly away! (chorus)

Please support Allie by depositing size 0-1 diapers in a collection box outside the nursery in Salmon Hall. Samantha Knauper ([email protected])

Opportunities to Serve

MEN!

We can do it, if we try.

Saturday, October 8th is our next Men’s Retreat in conjunction with the men of 3rd Presbyterian Church (Cedric Portis’ Church). The last retreat was a two-day event away from the church. DPC had only nine men attend! This next “retreat” is a one-day event at DPC. Sounds easier, right? Here’s the kicker, Rev. Maley has committed to having 50 men from DPC attend this retreat. So, put the date on your calendar, let the wife know that you’ll be spending the day with the guys from the church, and prepare to have an inspiring and challenging day. To register, look for the registration table in Mission Hall. Let Steve Collier ([email protected]) know if you can help with some of the preparations for the day.

HOPE Food Pantry

DPC's items are syrup, dry potatoes, canned stew, and Sloppy Joe sauce. Don't forget to watch for sale-priced backpacks. Please note that our beautiful cupboard has moved. It is now immediately to the right when you enter the Mission Hall doors. Thanks for your amazing support.
