A MOMENT WITH PASTOR JOHN
Believe. What does it mean to believe? Our all church study, Believe, captures three parts to believing:
what I know, what I do, and what I am. This summer, the studies in the Believe series center on what
we know. The next couple summers we will look into what I do and what I am.
I finished a course recently which asked how we know things, especially things of God. Answers to this
question have tended to group into one of two directions. One direction says that knowing about God
moves from God to us. The other direction says that knowing about God moves from us to God.
I believe that knowing about God best starts from knowing God. Or, more specifically, listening to God:
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and
through whom also he made the universe. —Hebrews 1:1-2 NIV
God has spoken. God has written (2 Timothy 3:15-17). God knows God best (Romans 8:26-27; 1
Corinthians 2:11). Since God created humanity, God has revealed himself to us people through what
he did (Romans 1:19-20) and in person (Genesis 3:8). It seems to me that the direction for knowing
God and knowing about God moves from God to us.
It got even better when Jesus walked the earth. God came to us (John 1:14). Here was God walking
and talking among us people for an extended period of time. Eyewitnesses were there to give us the
inside story.
I believe reading the Bible is the starting point for knowing about God. Why? Because God spoke and
wrote what he walked and talked.
This summer, walk with God and talk with God wherever you find yourself. I encourage you to also
read the Gospel of John this summer. John brings out the God who comes close to us so that we can
come close to God.
Pastor John

A Month of Goodbyes
This past month has felt like a month of goodbyes for me. My daughter’s first year of middle school
has flown by, and I realize she is one step closer to leaving the nest. I’ve spent the last days with Jodi in
our church office as Children’s Coordinator. I’m thankful she’ll continue to be part of our church family,
but I will miss working with her each week. While these are significant milestones, I had an even bigger
goodbye in May.
My grandma “finished the race and kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). In her last couple weeks on this
earth, she told us she was ready to be with Jesus and my grandpa. I am so thankful that she and my
grandpa had made sure to share their love of Jesus with our family. Even in those last days when a
stroke had stolen her ability to speak well, my grandma was praising God. Our goodbye was actually an
affirmation that we will see each other again!
Do you have that assurance—knowing that you will meet your loved ones again in heaven? The
word “goodbye” actually originated with the phrase “God be with you” combined with other common
greetings, like “good day.” I don’t have to tell my grandma goodbye anymore, because I know she is with
God forever. Have you prepared to say goodbye? ~ In His love, Kari
...let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses
surrounding us. Let’s throw off… the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus... Hebrews 12:1-2
Note: "Staying Connected" keeps you in touch with our Education staff.

• VBS could still use donations to help cover the cost of food.
• Trustees are asking for donations to replace the church’s dishwasher and copy machine, which are
vital to our church’s ministry.
Sole Hope
• The Friends Sunday school class is joining a mission project called “Sole Hope” and all are invited to

related diseases through education, jobs, and medical relief.”
• After Sunday school on June 5th, the Friends class invites all to join them for a
carry-in lunch and shoe cutting party. Our role involves cutting plastic milk
jugs and denim from old jeans to provide shoe material for people in eastern Uganda.
Don’t forget your scissors!
• The material along with a $10 donation is then sent to the Sole Hope project. The $10
is used to pay Ugandans to sew the shoes and purchase the rest of the materials
needed. To participate or learn more, contact Gwen Huck or the church office.
