Miesse lifts the lid and stares at the content with hismouth open, for 10 seconds.

MIESSE (CONT'D)Sweet Jesus! I'm filthy rich!

Miesse reaches for his lantern and shines light on the

inside. The box is filled to the rim with gold bars, 5 ozto 35oz. He sits beside the box, and touches some of thebars, lifting one once a while and dropping it back inplace.

    MIESSE (CONT'D)What now?

Miesse gets up and goes toward the entrance and grabs thebike handles. He rolls it out into the open and tries tostart it up. No success, so he leads it back to his buggy. He then takes his backpack and turns it upside down, spilling the content at the curb, without thinking about it

twice. Then he reaches to the buggy's carrier platform andgrabs the backpack that was intended for Brandi and doesthe same. He then goes back to the cave.

EXT. SIERRAS, CO ROUTE 107 -- EVENING

FRED MIESSE makes his 14th trip. The gold bars are pilingup on his buggy's platform. He empties the second backpack. Then he looks at the pile and turns his head toward thespilled content as the curb and walks to it. He rummagesthrough it until he pulls a folded black plastic covering. He spreads it out and then places it over the pile of bars. Then he ties strings to the corners of the cover and

    attaches them to the frame.

MIESSEThe bike... damn, I wanna take ittoo.

Miesse lifts the bike and places it on the platform, tilting it inward and then using his hiking rope, heattaches it tightly to the frame, going back and forth. Hetries to wiggle the bike, but it seems to be sitting firmly.

    MIESSE (CONT'D)All right, crossing fingers.

Miesse starts the engine and shifts the gear. The buggydoes have a hard time to move, but move it does, finally.

MIESSE (CONT'D)Hope I've got enough gas.

Miesse does not know that there is a pair of eyes watchinghis every move for the past few hours.

ZEIRA CENTER, CATHERINE'S OFFICE -- DAY

CATERINE and ALEJANDRA CRUZ ("ALEX", 47) sit at the coffeetable, and chat. Alex sips her coffee with an expression ofbeing in heaven on earth.

    ALEX

    It's damn good. I am a convert.Have more?

CATHERINESpecial batch, will get youmore... Talk to Moss, he's got histentacle in Guatemala, have himput you on his list. Not a bigproduction just yet, a fewgrowers. They just started a yearago, it's on a first-come,first-serve basis.

ALEXThere was never love lost betweenme and Moss... But the coffee ismaking me warm inside. There's nocontradiction!

    CATHERINE(laughs)

    Let me get your refill.

Catherine takes Alex's cup and goes to the conference roomthat has the coffee machine, refills the cup and brings itback to the office.

ALEXThanks!Wait! You don't drink coffee! Sohow come--

CATHERINEConverts. You wouldn't believe howit's smoothing out negotiationswith third parties.

    ALEXI would!

    Alex lifts her cup.

    ALEX (CONT'D)Cheers!

    CATHERINESo, what's your estimate?

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    6/46

    6.

ALEX250 kilos. Based on the pile.

    CATHERINEThat's quite a pile!

    ALEX

    Yeah... So what we do?

CATHERINEMiesse can't do much with it atthe moment. Probably taking a fewounces now and then to cover hisliving expenses. We won't make anywaves for time being.

ALEXRight. He probably waits for anopportune moment to convert it toliquidity.

CATHERINEThe pile is not my interest--wehave our gold needs covered, though it may be of governmentinterest and that's where itshould end up, in a central bankvault. What I'd like to know iswhat are his connections to formerSkynet staff.

    ALEXSurveillance then.

    CATHERINE(NODS)

Yes. Who, where, what and how. Wecan't leave it to chances. ThoughI don't expect something as majoras the infection, we've nocertainty about something as nastynot being out there. We need tohave a clear idea what we may bedealing with.

ALEXI can't do it alone. Miesse, noproblem, but for the potentialnetwork, I'd need some reliablepeople.

CATHERINEI've four K's just graduating froma security training. Zeira's finefor now, I can reassign them toyou.

    ALEXSounds good. They don't sleep.

    CATHERINEThey don't have to sleep.

    ALEXRight. What's the time frame?

CATHERINEGive me a week. I'll do someinitial training myself and thenyou can take over and refine it.

    ALEXVacations!

CATHERINEDeserved, you haven't had any for

    years.

ALEXAll of the sudden... Not sure whatI'd do with my time.

    CATHERINEYou've a lot of friends.

ALEXA very good point!Moss... still in that little

    office here at A Wing?

CATHERINENo, for a while he has a wholefloor at the Annex G, A1.

ALEXWhole floor, uh? How he's been?

    CATHERINEInvaluable.

    ALEXA convert.

    CATHERINE(laughs)

    Yes.

ALEXWell then, I'll pay him a visit.

    ACT TWO

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CONNORS' APARTMENT -- DAY

JOHN and LAUREN are standing beside Cameron's bed. It's amobile high tech device that can be set into differentpositions. It has three segments that can be set on

    different levels.

LAURENIt can go vertical, or upsidedown. The straps would keepCameron fixed in position. Thebottom segment can be set fordifferent tension levels.

JOHNWith all the gadgets, what would Ido?

LAURENYou don't rely on gadgets, onlywhen you sleep or not here.Nothing can replace an actualtension exercise done by someone.

    JOHNWhen is Cameron transferred?

LAURENTwo days. We need to make surethat the implant is workingproperly and the pathways are

building up. Meanwhile, you have abit of reading to do.

Lauren POINTS to the considerable pile of material stillwrapped up in plastic, sitting on the bedside stand.

    JOHNHow was the surgery?

LAURENAll went well. Cameron's stable. She's not giving us anymore scares.

    JOHNAny ideas what went wrong?

    LAUREN(shaking her head NO)

Wish I could tell you. We haven'tfound anything that may have beenthe cause.

LAUREN (CONT'D)Les says there's always a risk ofa shock. It's similar to a birth,in more ways than a few.

    JOHNPhysical interaction. A symbolic

    pat on the lower back.

LAURENI think that your intuition toldyou what to do.

JOHNI hope I've got that is spades.

LAURENI'd like to think that of all ofus.

    KNOCK on the door.

    JOHNYes! Come in!

    MOSS enters.

MOSSHi John! Long no see. Hope I'm notinterrupting.

    JOHNNo. What brings you here?

    MOSSHow're you doing?

    JOHNI'm good, you?

MOSSFine. Just that last... epidemicwhacked me a bit. Getting over it.Just wanted to check if there isanything you'd want beyond thebasics already here.

JOHNI think I have all I need. Nothingcomes to mind.

MOSSYou'll be here for... two years? It is a pretty long time, so we'dlike to make it as enjoyable aspossible.

    MOSS(POINTING to the Cameron's bed)

    It's a beast, isn't it?

    JOHNYou?

MOSSJust the engineering part andmanufacture. Lauren's and Mia'sdesign.

LAURENMia's, mostly. My input was ratherminor.

    MOSS

    False modesty!

    LAUREN(laughing)

Really, just tweaks from my side.

    MOSSAnd the concept. Be proud!

    LAUREN(smiling)

    Okay, the concept too.

Moss' phone rings. Moss puts it to his ear and listens.

MOSSNo. You gotta be kidding! Sure.I'll be there.Gotta run. See you around, John!

    JOHNSee you around.

    Moss leaves.

LAURENI better go, I've quite aworkload. Pop by, or call me ifyou need something.

JOHNOn my way out too, need to bringin my stuff from Oasis and say byeto Tonya's pies!

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CONNORS' APARTMENT -- NIGHT

JOHN wakes up in his chair. The room is dimly lit by theoutside lamps. There is a upside-down book resting on hislap. The wall clock shows 3:17 in large red LED letters.John puts the book aside on a small coffee table and getsup. He heads toward the high tech bed in the middle of the

room and looks down. Despite in a room shadow, Cameron'sface is clearly visible and seems very peaceful. John grabsa strand of hair and moves it aside, then bends down andkisses Cameron's forehead.

    JOHNI should be sleeping.

John leaves the room, which he calls in his mind Cameron'sRoom and goes to his desk in the other room. He touches theroller ball on his mouse to activate the monitor. Then hescrolls to his file folder and pulls one called "Log(private)".

He types down: "Why 3:17?" and then on the next line: "AskLes about talking to myself".

    JOHN (CONT'D)Why 3:17?

(sighs)I think I need some fresh air.

John puts on a sweat shirt and slips into sneakers. He hasthe laces tied loosely under the tongues, in what he calls"ready-to-go mode". He goes back to his terminal and typesin: "Get new sneakers, soles cracked".

    JOHN (CONT'D)Fortunately it's not rainingtonight.

John hangs his plastic mag key around neck and heads forthe apartment door and he half turns towards Cameron.

    JOHN (CONT'D)I'll be back.

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CATHERINE'S OFFICE -- DAY

CATHERINE sits behind her desk. JON SEDWIAK (47) stands atwindow and looking outside. He turns toward Catherine.

    JONShe did call that night.

    CATHERINEOh, good.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    12/46

    12.

JONI told her that despiteconsidering it evil, it is anecessary evil. If it's kept incheck, there's a silver lining.Once a while. What I hateviscerally is the paper pushing

    aspect of it.

CATHERINEThe departments need to have somemode of communication with a trail.

JONNo, I did not mean that. It's okaywith me, I do understand that. It's the busybodies that come upwith... stuff.

    CATHERINE

    Example?

JONLike this designation initials.Did not pass the vote yet.

CATHERINEHaven't been keeping up, beingbusy here.

JONK's are supposed to be in a cyborgcategory, the rest of us in human

category. In an official or legalcapacity the cyborgs names wouldbe prepended with C and humanswith H. So, I'll be H Jon Sedwiak.

CATHERINEInteresting. I suppose that may besometimes handy, say if there's amedical emergency or such. But theemphasis of the legal aspect--notsure what to make of it.

JONMaybe there is a connection withthe latest Congress' output. Theareas under K's control are losingtheir ability to produce newmembers. Quid quo pro, they getthe statehood for relinquishingthe production to the federalgovernment.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    13/46

    13.

CATHERINEHeard of that. Zeira has norestriction, so I did not pay muchattention. Maybe I should.

JONA new entity has been legislated,

CRI or Cyborg ReproductionInstitute. Which is a fancy namefor a manufacturing facility.

    CATHERINEWho heads it?

JONIt is still just on paper, butheard it would be Ellen Goodnow.Or should I say C Ellen Goodnow?

    CATHERINE

Actually, that's a good choice. Ifit's coming, her at the helm maycurb a bit the excess oflegislators. I think Savannah musthave recommended her. I wouldn'tworry in this case. She can runcircles around busybodies.

JONGood to know. Whatever dilutes theconcentration of federal power isgood, in my view.

    CATHERINEWhat's Savannah's take?

JONWe differ on some minor stuff, butin general, she agrees with me.

CATHERINEJon, I have a meeting in a fewminutes... we'll continue anothertime. Or I can schedule a familyevening in the next few days. Haveyou two decided on the date yet?

JONSeventeenth next month. I'm sureyou'll hear the date from Savannahat least twice a day soon, itwould be hard to forget.

    ACT THREE

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, C WING, TOSHIRO'S LAB -- LATE AFTERNOON

LAUREN sits on a swivel chair beside TOSHIRO. They bothlook at a monitor displaying results of a MAT (MagneticAxial Tomography) scan.

LAURENIt went beyond expectations. Allthe threads are connected. How'syour projector?

TOSHIROA few hurdles, but nearcompletion. Need to calibrate it,the feedback end is taking longerthan I hoped.

    LAUREN

    How'd you calibrate it?

TOSHIROAllison's coming tonight, volunteering as a test subject. And she can give me a hand withthe feedback filters.

LAURENBut shouldn't the threads take acare of the information transfer?

    TOSHIRO

Not on their own. We need tostimulate the pathways, so thevisual cortex knows how to get andprocess information.

    LAURENI thought it would bootstrapitself.

TOSHIROYes, but that process would take along time if left to chances and--

LAURENRight, it may get weaker if notused.

TOSHIROLes' working on something that mayhelp to fixate the patterns.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    15/46

    15.

LAURENYeah, he told me about the cascadetriggers. It's a bit arcane stufffor me. I hope he knows what he'sdoing.

    TOSHIRO

I looked into the concept and itseems to make a sense. It would bejust a localized event. Not unlikethe EM stimulation, except this ishormonal. It won't be done for acouple of weeks, so he's gotplenty of time to fine tune it.

Lauren does not respond, she sits quietly, staring at themonitor as if trying to read more from the display thanit's there.

    TOSHIRO (CONT'D)

    Something is bugging you.

    LAUREN(sighs)

The info blackout on the infectiondata. We have it all in and it'sunder a lock.

TOSHIROYou know I'm not that much intosecrecy, but I think in this caseCatherine is right. Releasing theinformation to public would carry

    a social cost.

LAURENMaybe you're right. It may bemisinterpreted and may have ademographic unintended effect. What I don't understand is thatCatherine's keeping some of thedata from John.

TOSHIROAt first, I thought it odd too.But you know that Catherine neverdoes anything without a goodreason. I think she is trying toprotect John.

    LAURENFrom?

TOSHIROInformation overload. Or emotionaloverload as a result.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    16/46

    16.

LAURENMaybe. It still rubs me wrong.

TOSHIROHer intent's obvious. But if youwant a confirmation, go toCatherine and ask.

    LAUREN(laughs)

    You sound like Mia!

TOSHIROSee, two people saying the samething... maybe we're on tosomething.

Lauren's cell phone RINGS, she pulls it out of her coatpocket.

    LAURENYes?Seven?Yeah, I know where.

    Lauren turns the phone off.

    LAUREN (CONT'D)Sorry.

    TOSHIRO

    I hope you're not!

    LAURENWhat do you--

    TOSHIRO(laughs)

I don't need a MAT scan to readyou! Have fun!

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CONNORS' APARTMENT -- DAY

C MARIA GALLO (apparent age 26), nurse, enters. JOHN issitting at his desk, reading some microbiology material. Hehears Maria and goes to the Cameron's room.

    JOHNHi Maria!

MARIAHello, John. Time to get samples.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    17/46

    17.

    JOHNYeah, go ahead.

    MARIAWhat happened?

    JOHN

Why? Oh, the spill. For somereason the IV attachment slipped. So I fixed it.

MARIAI need to put it in the report. Doyou remember exactly when?

JOHNReally? About half an hour ago.

MARIAI did not make the rules, but

anything out of the ordinary hasto go into the report.

JOHNOkay, will bear that in mind.

MARIAJust a reminder, you need to takeCameron to Toshiro's lab at 3 PM.

JOHNI know, I have alarm set on. IsAllison in today?

MARIANo, they finished last night. Butshe is supposed to work onsomething else tonight ortomorrow. It's Jen's shifttomorrow, but I can leave her anote to let you know when Allisonis in.

JOHNNo, thanks. Not necessary, I cancall Allison or leave a messagefor her.

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, C WING, TOSHIRO'S LAB -- AFTERNOON

CAMERON is in her bed that is in the middle of the lab.TOSHIRO opens Cameron's eyelids and tapes them in position. Then he lowers his apparatus, reminiscent of an opticianset to Cameron's head and fixes it in position. JOHN sitson a chair beside Cameron and watches.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    18/46

    18.

    JOHNHow does that work, exactly?

TOSHIROReinforcement. Trying to makesynaptic connections from twosides. What we are sending

visually is the replica of thefiles that are in her storage.

JOHNSo this would be a bit likesynesthesia?

TOSHIROIn a very limited scope, yes. Thesignals are synchronized. What'ssent visually is at the same timesend from the storage through theconnecting bridges.

JOHNWhat would she recall? The visualpart or the stored data?

TOSHIRODepends on her state. At themoment, the storage's the primarysignal, as it is available all thetime. We have a clock inside thathandles the propagation, it's likea pacemaker. Once she's awake,we'd train her to be able to

access the storage just byrecollection of the visualstimulus.

JOHNSounds easy, but it may be quite awork.

TOSHIRORight. Brain is a wonderful organand can do amazing stuff on itsown, but for the most part, whatis really going on depends on theowner. This is just a small partof Cameron, a carrier frequency ifyou will. What you are doing isfar more important part.

JOHNI sometimes wonder if she canreally hear me.

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    19/46

    19.

TOSHIROShe can hear you all right. Giveme a sec--

Toshiro moves towards his desk and starts selecting throughmenus on his monitor.

TOSHIRO (CONT'D)The top signal is yours. Themiddle signal is what we pick upfrom Cameron in her audioprocessing areas. And the bottomrepresents the processes that arerelated, or what is the result.

    JOHNNo privacy, uh?

    TOSHIROActually, no, we can't convert

this to audible signal. That partis only accessible with a key andonly you have one.

JOHNDid not know I have one.

TOSHIROCheck your application set whenyou get back to your system. Youshould see "Audio Key" in there.

    JOHN

I remember seeing it, just was notsure what's that for.

TOSHIROThere is a context sensitive helpfor most items and this one isn'tan exception.

JOHNBut if the content is locked, howthat helps you?

TOSHIROWe're interested in signals, notthe content. Monitoringfunctionality. The correlation ofcontent and how it is perceivedand processed by Cameron would beyour job.

JOHNWhat if I need help to analyzesomething?

  • 7/30/2019 The Connors Chronicles: F05E05 - Induction

    20/46

    20.

TOSHIROIt would be up to you to decidewhat you want to share.

JOHNYou guys seem to have thought ofeverything.

TOSHIROProtocols and policies is mostlyMia's work. She's quite asynergist. Glad she's on the team.

JOHNHaven't seen her for a while. AndLes.

TOSHIROShe's due soon, so she's workingfrom home for time being. Les'

with her, coming in only fortrigger sessions. There's not muchelse to do until Catherine decidesthe direction of the geneticresearch.

    JOHNBeside the genome bank.

TOSHIROBeside the genome bank. Right. OK,we're done for today.

Toshiro turns off the projector and disconnects the cablefrom Cameron's socket. A BEEP indicating a sweep of a magkey cuts in and the lab door opens. ALLISON enters the lab.

ALLISONHi! Seems I'm a bit early.

TOSHIROWe're done, so just on time.

JOHNHi Allison, how're you? Can youpop by at my place when you'vetime?

ALLISONSure. Not for long, Michael isperforming at a school playtonight, so I need to be there atseven-thirty PM. How's our patient?

Cameron is suddenly starting to have minor spasms andAllison releases her hand quickly.

    ALLISON (CONT'D)What did I do?

    TOSHIRO

I bet it's unrelated to you. John, take Cameron to Lauren's lab rightaway, I'll see if I can findanything odd in our procedure andsend along.

    ALLISONI can help John.

TOSHIRONo, stay here, Allison, I want youto go over the session data withme.

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, B WING, LAUREN'S LAB -- LATER

LAUREN is running a batch of tests and looking at hermonitor. JOHN sits beside Cameron.

LAURENNothing. Everything seems to benormal. No physical cause I canpinpoint.

    JOHNIdeas?

LAURENGrowing pains? Les may need tocheck last few sequences.

    JOHNI've a hunch.

    LAURENWhat is it?

JOHNWill tell you when I'm sure. I'lltest it later today. There's nodanger, I believe.

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CONNORS' APARTMENT -- LATE AFTERNOON

JOHN is sitting on a chair beside Cameron's bed. Heunstraps Cameron's legs and starts pushing one up 5 timesand then another. This is a 10 minutes tension sequence. In

the middle of it, he hears KNOCKS on the door.

    JOHNAllison, come in!

ALLISONHey! How did you know it's me?

    JOHNThe knocks, they are so...Allisony.

    ALLISON

    (laughs)If you say so.

John is watching Cameron all the time while chatting.

JOHNI think Cameron moved her head.Very slightly.

    ALLISONAny significance?

    JOHN

Can you come over here and grabher hand?

    ALLISON(placing her hands behind herback)

    No, not again!

    JOHN(laughs)

Don't worry, I just want to see ifshe reacts.

    ALLISONThat's what I mean!

JOHNLauren did not find anything, sothere is really no danger.

    ALLISONWhat if something happens?

JOHNI don't think we have to worry.

ALLISONOkay, but don't blame me if thereis a problem.

Allison approaches Cameron's bed and then hesitantly takesCameron's left hand and holds it. Cameron's fingersslightly curl following the shape of Allison's hand.

    JOHNDid you see that?

ALLISONYeah. But what does that mean?

JOHNNot entirely sure... I think sherecognizes you.

ALLISONC'mon! That's not possible, Thisis my second time when I'm closeto her.

JOHNWhat I mean is that she recognizedyou the first time.

ALLISONJohn, that does not make any sense.

JOHNI know. But there are some thingsthat make Cameron different.Beside the simple fact that she isa clone of you.

ALLISONDifferent from me? I hope so!

    (laughs)

    JOHNDifferent from everybody.

ALLISONThe chip, or storage, how itinteracts?

JOHNNot really, there are people withimplants and that does not makethem any different. Let's see if Ican make it somewhat coherent pettheory.

    ALLISONOkay, shoot.

JOHNFirst, she is your twin. I've readsome studies about twins and thereseems to be some form of

connection that goes beyond justsensory signals.

    ALLISONAware of it, but--

JOHNIt does not mean that theconnection is not sensory. It maymean that the sense that isbetween twins is not mapped ontonon-twin population.

ALLISONSixth sense? But that alwaysreferred to non-sensory links...not that I am buying it.

JOHNHow much do we know of whatconstitutes the physical world?Despite the libraries of material, data and theories, we know verylittle. The body of knowledgestarted really accumulate in thelast two--three centuries.

    ALLISONA good point.

JOHNYou know about the particleentanglement, right? I am nottrying to say that is what we havehere, just that there aremechanisms that seem to be outsideour experience.

ALLISONNo objection. But take Toshi'sbugs. Never seen before bio-cyborgorganisms, yet we can account forall their aspects based onstandard physics. K's are anotherexample.

    JOHNSo may be Catherine.

JOHNSynesthesia. When Toshi wasexplaining the process of bridging

between visual nerves and cortexand the storage, it sounded to melike synesthesia, a form of it.

ALLISONNot exactly, it is more one waystreet--

JOHNYou don't know really. That's yourassumption. Les thinks it's morecomplex multi-directionalstructure, Toshi thinks so too.

ALLISONOkay, what do you think is goingon, I mean here, between me andCameron.

JOHNNot sure, but it may be one sensetransformed into another. Say sheis able to smell you and thatsmell matches her own concept ofwhat she smells like. When youtouch her, this sensation may be

transformed. She is perceivingherself, or concept of herself. Itmay be a more complex sensation.

ALLISONActually, that seems to be fullycontained in my physics.

    JOHN(laughs)

    Yeah, your physics are intact.

    ALLISONBack to your pet theory.

JOHNSo, whatever the synesthesiawiring is, when you touchedCameron today, she couldn't parseyou, she got confused. Later here, since she already experienced you,her reaction was mild. She knowsyou now as the other.

EXT. ROCKY MOUNTAINS, HELICOPTER CRASH SITE - DAY

    SUPERIMPOSE: 2005

CATHERINE WEAVER wakes up as droplets of drizzle land onher face. She tries to lift her head, but a sharp painshoots through her spine. She tries again more slowly. She

lifts hear head a few inches, enough to asses hercondition. Her legs are lying on the ground in grotesqueangles. She sees her left arm, there is nothing down fromher elbow, just two bones protruding upward. Her right handseems to be where it is supposed to be. She drops her headback on the cold ground.

A minute, that seems like eternity, passes. Catherine triesto turn her head left. She can turn in enough to seehelicopter wreckage. She then turns her head right. A fewpieces of metal lie scattered in her field of vision. Shetries to turn her head back to face upward, but she can't.Despite her effort, she feels so weak that she almost

    passes out.

Catherine's vision blurs and the perception of colors isreduced to primaries. The grass becomes red and the skyyellow. She notices a metallic, blue object some distancefrom her. It is vertical, as if sticking from the ground.

    CATHERINE(whisper)

    A wing?

Catherine tries to focus, the object changes shape andseems to be moving closer.

    CATHERINE (CONT'D)(whispers)

    Angel.

    CATHERINE (V.O.)Don't go yet!

The object is starting to take a shape of a human form. Atthe distance of 3 meters, Catherine can't comprehend whatshe is seeing. She sees herself. Her vision improves a bit,the color palette is still reduced, but she can perceivemore than primary hues.

    CATHERINE(very weak voice)

    Where am I?

She sees herself kneeling down and taking her right hand. She does not know if she is so cold or her kneeling one isso cold.

    CATHERINE (CONT'D)(barely audible)

    Take care of Savannah.

    OTHER CATHERINE

    I will.

    P.O.V.: MPA CATHERINE

Catherine's body lies lifeless on the ground. MPA Catherinereaches toward the neck and checks the vitals with herfingers. She then lifts Catherine as if she was a featherand walks toward the forest edge.

MPA CATHERINEFour hours till rescue arrival.

200 meters in the woods, MPA Catherine converts her arms

into spades and starts digging. She carefully separates thegrassy top and moss from the soil.

    SAVANNAHWhat happened next?

CATHERINEI covered the grave with the grassand moss to make it look likebefore. Then I went back to thecrash site and waited.

SAVANNAHWeren't the rescuers surprisedthat you had no injuries?

CATHERINEI did have some made up scratchesand cuts. And a partial amnesia.Yes, they were surprised, but theywere constantly repeating howlucky I am.

SAVANNAHThey did not take your vitals?

CATHERINEYes, they did. It was easy. I wasafraid they'd take me to ahospital, so I told them to get meto L.A. and that I'll contact myfamily physician right away.

Savannah is quiet again. Then she turns toward Catherineand gives her a hug.

    ACT FIVE

INT. ZEIRA CENTER, CATHERINE'S OFFICE -- DAY

CATHERINE and C ELLEN GOODNOW are sitting at a coffee table.

    GOODNOW

There're nearly no endos left, except a few dozens in the northand those will be gone soon too.Repurposed for new K's. It'scheaper than working from ascratch.

CATHERINELast I've heard, there were twoenclaves that wanted to beindependent.

    GOODNOW

Right, that's where the last endosare, too. But they are getting onthe bandwagon. It's not that theysee the government as somethingvery positive. Economics, besideother factors. And education. Theycan't match the CRI curriculum.

CATHERINEThe government offers' too good acandy to pass?

    GOODNOW

That's the best way to put it. CRIhas a degree of autonomy, though, that was my condition beforeputting my ink on the dotted line.

    CATHERINEThe production or the curriculum?

GOODNOWCurriculum. The population figureis set by government to fourhundred thousand. Given that thecurrent K population is onehundred and twenty five thousandnow, that seems to be generous.

CATHERINEWhy set that at all? The growth isa vector of resources availabilityand economics. This seems to berather arbitrary.

CATHERINEIt may take a while to reach thatfigure. Years at the least, evenwith repurposing the endos formaterial.

GOODNOWHow does that influence Zeira'splanned production?

CATHERINEIt doesn't. That is, at present.

I'm not that much concerned withthe cap. Rather, the capacity ofgovernment to come up witharbitrary rules is something to beaware of and watch.

GOODNOWI get all the cyborg relatedlegislature on my desk, so I'llsend you briefs whenever somethinglands on it.

    CATHERINE

Thank you. I could get it fromSavannah, but this may workbetter, she's too busy to payattention to a specific sector'sdetails.

Red LED is flashing on Catherine's desk. She gets up andwalks toward her desk and hits a key on the keyboard."SECURITY BREACH" is flashing on her monitor.

CATHERINE (CONT'D)If you excuse me, there issomething I need to attend to.

    GOODNOWI'll stay in touch.

CATHERINEMr. Hort, what you're up to? Ijust got a security alert notice.

NEALI did some testing of one of myideas... Sorry about the hole.

    CATHERINEHole?

Neal points up toward ceiling and Catherine moves right

underneath what appears to be a dollar coin sized hole inthe ceiling. She focuses and can see the blue of the skyinside the hole.

CATHERINE (CONT'D)That would be 3 holes.

NEALWell, it's essentially one holewith three intersections.

NEALI'm not sure, but maybe I can. There's one problem.

    CATHERINEWhich is?

    NEAL

I've no idea where the hole ends.

CATHERINEI'm not sure I understand what youjust said.

NEALI know. I just tried to do somemath in my head and it doesn'tmake any sense.

    CATHERINESpecifically?

HORTI hope that I am wrong, there mustbe an error. I am getting ... thehole doesn't end.

CATHERINEThat's a bit disconcerting.Maybe if you do the horizontaltest with a substantial mass as atarget, it may be enough to findout if your math's valid or not.

    NEALHope it's not far away.

    CATHERINE

You may need to take a week longtrip. Please work out the math inthe meanwhile. Do you needanything, material, equipment?

TOSHIROIs it a cut from endo's eyes?

    Neal NODS.

    TOSHIRO (CONT'D)Ingenious! What's the res?

NEALSame as your projector. I did someadjustment on the pixelinterpolation... it should be moresharp.

TOSHIROSo would it work out of the box?

NEALProbably needs some tweaking...calibration. I did some tests withyour program. Looked fine. Maybethe delta for clips needs higherframe rate, but it shouldn't be anorder of magnitude, the lenses aregetting very warm if you push toomuch.

    TOSHIROOne twenty?
