Safety Message from Dick Poser

1

Corval’s organizational development Leader Rob Chvatal describes culture as “the way we do things around here”. We do things in a certain way because that’s what we value and believe. Corval strives for a safety culture where everyone feels responsible for safety and where each of us goes beyond the call of duty to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and mitigate them…..even when no one is looking. A business owner of another contractor once asked me how much our safety program cost us. I thought for a moment and responded “It’s not a cost…It’s an investment”.

In 2011, poisonings overtook motor vehicle crashes for the first time as the leading cause of unintentional-injury-related death for all ages combined. The most common poisoning is from prescription drugs, particularly opioid pain medication. Every day 60 people die from opioid pain killers. People can become quickly addicted without realizing what’s happening. Most Americans don’t know their painkillers contain opioids….or that it’s a felony to share them. The risk is real. If your teenager has been prescribed a painkiller due to a sports injury….pay attention. Don’t let your loved ones become a statistic!

Beulah Clinic – Corval Management Services ProjectDue to the efforts put forth by Ashley Scholl and Robert Weir, Corval Management Services (CMS) was awarded the Construction Management project from the Coal Country Community Health Centers (CCCHC), Beulah Clinic. This is a $7.4MM project for Corval. The site is located next to Corval’s office in Beulah.

Corval employed EAPC as the architect/engineer and NOR-SON has been contracted as the General Contractor for the project. NOR-SON will mobilize on March 12th, weather permitting. The addition to the clinic will be constructed in phases in hopes to lessen the disturbance of daily work, as patients will still be seen during the construction. Anticipated completion is fall of 2018.

The project will enhance the way CCCHC provides medical care by doubling the clinic space and allow CCCHC to bring more specialist to the area.

Ashley will be the Senior Project Manager, Navarr Vaira will be the onsite Project Manager and Pam Johnson will be the Project Manager for Corval Management Services.

Minneapolis Pipefitters’ Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) Addition & Renovation ProjectProgress continues to be consistent for CCI on the Minneapolis Pipefitters JATC project in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. All of the wells have been drilled for the geothermal system since the last project update, and CCI will begin working on the manifold to tie the system in during the next few months. Demolition is nearing completion inside the existing building, precast has been completed, and the structural steel has been installed for the new addition.

We are entering summer break this week for JATC students. The last day of class was April 12th, which means we now have full access to the building. Moving forward the goal is to get through the demo phase as quickly as we can so that we may move on to our structural steel installation for the mezzanine, metal stud framing, and MEP (Mechanical Electrical Plumbing) rough-ins.

Some other major upcoming tasks will include installation of the in-floor heat in the new addition, pouring the concrete for the ground floor of the new addition and the mezzanine in the existing building, roofing both the new addition and the existing building, and installation of all new mechanical systems.

Project Updates Project Updates Andeavor - Mandan, NDAndeavor, formerly Tesoro, was founded in the 1960s, primarily engaged in petroleum exploration and production. The Company built its Kenai, Alaska refinery in 1969 and with the most recent acquisition of the St. Paul Park Refinery, Andeavor has a refining capacity of 1,157,000 bpd.

CCI has been actively working at the Mandan, ND refinery for over 5 years with a fulltime staff of Kurt Ruzicka, Jordan Frank, Navarr Vaira, Kory Tuss and Gavin Dacar. We have had crews ranging from 10 to 150 craft employees. CCI has been performing a variety of services including routine maintenance, capital projects, turnarounds, tank repairs and engineering services.

We were recently awarded a project with Andeavor’s MPO Group (Major Projects Organization) to perform foundation work for a new Naptha Distillation Unit in Mandan.

On the Maintenance and small capital projects side: Corval is currently finishing an HVAC replacement project for the Central Control Server Room. This room required continuous Cooling/ventilation during all stages of construction. Corval is self-performing civil work, concrete, demo, equipment setting, piping, and ductwork replacement. (Pictured: Gabriel Hartfield during Start-up/Commissioning.)

Other projects kicking off including the 1200Amp Loop and Redundant 4160VAC Feed to Alky mitigation. Both are Electrical upgrade projects requiring substantial civil work throughout the facility. Corval is self-performing helical piles, drilled piers, multiple rail and road crossings, PDC building and transformer foundations, and structural steel installation.

Corval also has been assisting with the Rebranding project of converting all signage from Tesoro to Andeavor. Work in Mandan is currently going on and the Dickinson Refinery will be “Rebranded” starting in May. Special thanks to Shane Gross for his work on the rebranding project.

Our New Reliability and Maintenance (R&M) business starts to Take OffR&M is getting to be an everyday acronym at Corval. This new business for us is a part of our C2020 strategy, and it has been gaining traction over the past year.

For many years, Corval has had a Mechanical Service Division, maintaining and servicing HVAC equipment. This division is on call 24/7 to provide quick response to customer needs. They also provide longer term equipment preventative maintenance services.

With this new R&M Division provides our customers in the oil and gas industry with a full spectrum of services in the Midstream and Maintenance areas, as well as offering complete support with their Facility Builds, Tank Battery Installations, and Emissions and Natural Gas Recapture Systems.

Our crews, Construction Managers, and Project Managers are equipped with the knowledge and the experience to assist in the design, implementation, construction, startup and maintenance necessary to keep our customers running efficiently and productively. We have preventative, routine, and on-call maintenance programs designed around our customers’ needs. Several customers have actively sought our input and assistance in the efforts to re-engineer their processes and designs to increase productivity or improve product flow and safety at well sites and gathering locations.

Customers like Andeavor (formerly known as Tesoro), OASIS, Polar Fab, Hennepin County, P66, HALCON, Bruin, Ferus, Hunt Oil, and EOG, are just a few of the customers who value this type of contract commitment.

As we are all aware, industrial work can rise and fall but maintenance and service can be pretty consistent across diverse economic conditions. Having R&M and Service contracts in place can help Corval ensure consistent revenue in all market conditions.

From Pipefitter to Vigneron..... John Strand

In April Corval will be saying good bye and best wishes to John Strand as he will literally retire into greener pastures.

John, not being one to rest after 45 years as a pipefitter and the past 6 years working in the office for Corval, plans on starting up a vineyard; Vigneron means “a person who cultivates grapes for winemaking”. Not just a small hobby vineyard, he plans on starting with a fenced in one acre parcel.

After researching through the University of Minnesota, John has decided on 4 varieties of the red nature which will be winter hardy, there will also be a darker red patch for the grandchildren to eat off the vine.

It will take three to five years to get a good first crop for the picking and he has lined up a local winery to turn his harvest into wine. Right now he is trying to come up with a good label, which he said with so many vineyards popping up, is not an easy task.

Aside from planting, pruning and caring for his vineyard, John has other projects he is looking forward too.

This spring he has plans to build a barn and a root cellar, while continuing to care for a large garden with his father (93). And he figures he might as well start raising chickens again, something he has not done since his children were young.

In 2011, John and his son, Adam, built a log cabin just as people did in the pioneer days. They use this cabin mostly for hunting but also installed solar panels for more light and a wood stove for cooking last year. This project and many others are the result of John’s “let’s do it” attitude. An attitude John brought to Corval as well.

John, you will be missed. We will also look forward to the day when you taste the fruit of your labor. Best Wishes from Corval.

2018 Minnesota Polar PlungeCorval’s Minnesota employees were “freezin’ for a reason” in March as they plunged into frigid Minneapolis waters in support of Special Olympics Minnesota; for the third straight year.

It was a chilly 40 degrees that Saturday morning when the Corval team plunged into Lake Calhoun after raising $3,897 in pledge donations. All funds raised go towards programming and events for more than 8,000 athletes statewide.

Thank you to our brave jumpers: Peter Jordan, Rob Chvatal, Brian Anderson, Mike Riker, Allison Reinbold, Grant Mongin, Tony Harrington, Dan Marnach and Matthew Edwards for braving the Minnesota elements for a great organization. Also, thank you to everyone who came to the event and cheered on our team!
