Dominating an impressive 30 acre site, Caerphilly Castle is Wales’ largest and Britain’s second largest castle behind Windsor.
This medieval fortress was built mainly between 1268 and 1271 by Gilbert de Clare. Known as Gilbert ‘The Red’ because of his red hair, denoting his Norman heritage, he built the castle to take control of Glamorgan and to prevent the Welsh Prince Llewellyn ap Gruffudd from achieving his southward ambitions.
The design of the castle is based on a concentric ring of walls, something not seen in Britain before. It also has an extensive ring of water defences and huge gatehouses. This mammoth stronghold remains a striking testament to the Anglo-Norman domination of the area.

Set in 1645, the servants of Llancaiach Fawr Manor will be pleased to show you around their master’s fine house, provided you are of good repute of course!
If you are lucky, you might meet the master of the house Edward Prichard, or perhaps catch a glimpse of the mistress Mary Prichard, though she is a rather ‘sickly’ soul and does not like to brave the air of the valleys. With the Manor known for being haunted, you never know who you might meet when visiting this 17th century manor house! Enjoy day tours, ghost tours and events throughout the year at this splendid Manor House.

A legend of love It is said that the restless spirit of Princess Alice of Angouleme, wife of Gilbert de Clare roams Caerphilly Castle in search of her lost love. Legend has it, the princess, growing tired of her husband’s cold and angry ways; fell in love with amorous Welsh Prince Gruffudd of Brithdir, only to seal their unfortunate fate. The Princess perished of a broken heart after deranged Gilbert ordered the execution of her lover when the affair was exposed. Now on a moonlit night, you may see the Princess, known as ‘The Green Lady’ searching for her lover, wearing green as a symbol of her husband’s envy.
Famous FacesFamous faces to come out of the county borough of Caerphilly include the legendary Tommy Cooper, musicians The Manic Street Preachers, Falklands hero Simon Weston, Beauty and the Beast’s ‘Gaston’ actor Luke Evans who was raised in Aberbargoed, presenter Matt Johnson, sporting stars Aaron Ramsey, Nathan Cleverly and Joe Calzaghe… to name but a few!
08
Tommy CooperFamous comedian and magician Tommy Cooper was born in Llwyn Onn Street, Caerphilly on the 19th March 1921. His ‘larger than life’ personality and unique ability to entertain, makes Tommy one of Caerphilly’s most famous and much loved sons. To commemorate his life, a 9 ft bronze statue was commissioned by the Tommy Cooper Society and stands proudly opposite Caerphilly Castle.

The Penllwyn Pirate Penllwyn Manor in Pontllanfraith was once home to the most notorious and famous pirate… Sir Henry Morgan. The Welsh pirate, privateer, buccaneer and admiral of the Royal Navy was mentioned in the 2003 Hollywood film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and even has a brand of rum named after him, the ‘Captain Morgan’ Rum. The historic manor house still stands today and retains many of its beautiful original features
despite having many uses since Sir Henry Morgan lived there.
Big Ben Benjamin Hall, the Baron of Llanover and Abercarn oversaw the later stage installation of the hour bell in the famous ‘Big Ben’. Benjamin was a very
tall man and in honour of his help and parliament involvement at the time, many say the bell was named after him… ‘Big Ben’ is even inscribed on it!

Extracting pure apple juice is the secret to making the delicious Hallett’s Cider. The orchard has grown from 7 acres to 25 acres in 6 years and now supplies businesses all over the world. Try some refreshing cider at the local pub or buy some from the farm itself.
Don’t just take our word for it, Hallett’s Cider was awarded ‘Best Drink Producer in the UK’ by Radio 4 in their ‘Food and Drink Awards 2016’. Judges described Hallett’s Cider as ‘the most beautiful cider ever tasted’.
