As a child, I used to wonder what things would be like when I grew up – perhaps you did, too. Well, I’m not sure I ever re-ally “Grew Up”, but I’ve gotten a good bit older and have seen
a whole bunch of changes in Coweta County. It’s always easy to say that things are not the way they were in “the good old days”, but I suspect each generation has felt similar longings for the way things “used to be”.
In this issue of the Shopper, we have included an interesting ar-ticle by Anna Williams about downtown Newnan in the late 1800’s. And I’ll bet you that as that generation grew older, many com-plained that those newly invented automobiles were ruining their
horse businesses, and that telephones and moving pictures caused far too much “unnecessary social-izing”. And it’s not just the City of Newnan, but the once thriving communities that have seen some dramatic changes.
My wife and I married in 1969, lived in Atlanta for a year, then came back to Coweta County, and honestly, we thought things were a little behind the times here. The Alamo Theater had closed so we had to drive (back) to Atlanta just to see a movie. And while there, we would enjoy a Big Mac, as there was not a single McDonald’s here. But there had been a “Shopping Center” in Newnan for over ten years. It was only a block from the square with only 4 stores! The Newnan Country Club was just that, a nice club out in the country. Basically the east side of the “City” ended about where the water tower is now located on Bullsboro. Hwy 34 was a very curvy two-lane road that connected Newnan with Fayetteville. Peachtree City didn’t exist then, but there were three little country stores at Thomas Crossroads where one could buy gas, bread, some cheese crackers and a sack of tomatoes or apples. And the only way to get to Atlanta was to drive up Hwy 29 through Palmetto, Fairburn and College Park, as the “expressway” had not yet reached Coweta County.
Senoia, Sharpsburg, Turin, Grantville and Moreland were still thriving rural communities with a rather “relaxed” way of living, which I have come to enjoy so much. (I hope they can be successful in trying to keep things that way.) And our county map was dotted with other, even smaller, communi-ties such as Madras, Welcome, Roscoe, Sargent, Arnco, East Newnan and Raymond and Haralson, which have now been almost absorbed by the developing rural subdivisions.
So we may call those earlier times the “good old days”, but Coweta County now has much more to offer than it has ever had. We can purchase almost any goods or services we need with more con-venience, our new neighborhoods are attractive and up to date, and our county leaders are seeing to it that this growth is going in a positive direction. We are replete with medical care and prosperous businesses. New schools and colleges are being constructed, and our entertainment and cultural arts are of high quality. Yes, we may be a little more spread out but Coweta County is still a pretty darned good place to live. And Nadine and I will not be moving back to Atlanta!
JoePost Script: Grandpa lived in town but owned a hundred acres on that curvy little narrow road going to Fayetteville. It was the northwest corner of Thomas Crossroads and cost him less than $10,000. It’s a shame he forgot about me when he made his will!

Missed The Spring Selling Market?Most sellers are coached and
geared up to have their house on the market before the spring selling sea-son, while in reality, life gets in the way, there are projects that still need finishing and next thing you know, you’ve missed the season.

It’s easy for a seller to say, oh well I don’t want to do that because I might not choose what the next owner would like. Guess what? IF they are interested in a home that needs updating, they are going to re-duce more off the price of the house than it would have cost you to do the work before you listed. If you are try-ing to maximize your asking price, that work needs to be completed.
So don’t panic about missing “the selling season”. Do your homework and put it on the market once it’s completed. There will always be buy-ers out there!

If you ask District Manager Jason Mooney about the jingle, he simply says “They should play that all the time.” No doubt, if you’ve lived in Coweta County for any length of time, you’ve heard the Cook’s Pest Control jingle via a TV or radio commercial. “Looky, looky, looky, here comes Cooky ... Cook’s Pest Control.” “It just sticks in your head,” said Cook’s Mooney. “I’ve had people - when I walk into a place - actually start singing that to me.” Mooney heads a staff of 23 at the Cook’s Pest Control Sharps-burg office, located at 3500 Hwy. 34 East in Thomas Grace Plaza. It’s a district office that serves much of South and West Metro Atlanta. “We moved the office from Fairburn,” Mooney said. “The location was better and the acces-sibility was better. We cover not only Coweta, but Fayette, Doug-las, and Carroll Counties all the way down to Columbus.” “But we truly love it here. Coweta is a nice, growing area and just seemed to be the right place. We’ll eventually build a per-manent facility and I’d just soon build it here. Our overall plan is to continue growing, which we’ve done here in the last year or so, when our staff had only 16 em-ployees.” Cook’s Pest Control handles the usual suspects – termites, ants, spiders, mosquitos, bed bugs, car-penter bees, nuisance birds and rodents. And Mooney says that termites are actually in a different category. “We have a different depart-ment just for termites,” he said. “Termite just focuses on termites, because that’s its own little prob-lem and we have to address it differently.” Anyone that is interested in a service which Cook’s Pest Con-trol provides gets a Free Home or Business Inspection. Even though the inspection is free, it’s critical in determining a course of action needed.
“We want to see what’s going on,” Mooney says. “We can determine what the problem is and where it’s coming from. That’s the first thing in pest control ... know what you’re treating for. We can’t just go in and willy-nilly spray. We want to make sure we’re focusing on what the problem is.” “If you are having a problem with ants, we need to focus on tak-ing care of the ants. What kind of ant. If its roaches, what kind of roach. That’s going to determine our treatment methods. Even though an ant is an ant, they eat different things. A carpenter ant is going to be interested in a different thing, than say a fire ant.” Occasionally, pest control can run into an emergency situation. “Bees are a big thing as are wasps and hornets,” Mooney says. “It’s something people really get freaked out about. And it’s some-thing that really scares people, especially those with allergies. In that case, it is an ASAP-type thing.” Mooney feels two areas really separate Cook’s Pest Control from its competition - training and customer service. Mooney says people are probably surprised when they find out just how much training Cook’s techni-cians undergo prior to working in the general public.
“Our technicians typically have 160-plus hours worth of train-ing before they go into the field,” Mooney says. “Most companies don’t do that. We’ve hired people from other companies that say ‘I rode with a guy for two days and then they stuck me in a truck’. We’ve got computer training that’s very extensive. We send our techs to Decatur, Ala., for a week of training in class and hands-on.” “And Cook’s actually built a house where we do more training. It has almost every condition that we would run into out in the field. It’s got everything we would need to train our people.” Mooney says the customer ser-vice factor is of prime importance in doing business. “When I’m interviewing some-one to become a part of our staff, I ask them if they know what busi-ness that we’re in. They say ‘pest control’. I say that’s the industry we’re in. The business we’re in is customer service because cus-tomer service is how we get paid. A happy customer will always pay their bill. An unhappy customer ...” “If someone is unhappy, they are always welcome to call us. We will always make additional trips to make sure they are happy. That is paramount.”

Two students from the Central Educational Center (CEC) will be competing in this summer’s SkillsUSA national championships. Breanne Thompson (Central Educa-tional Center, Northgate High School) won 1st Place in Graphics Communi-cations at this year’s SkillsUSA Georgia competitions. Lauren Veal (Central Ed-ucational Center, Newnan High School) won 1st Place in Early Childhood Edu-cation at this year’s state competitions. The two CEC students were among 1,876 competitors from 168 chapters across Georgia to compete in this year’s SkillsUSA 2014 Georgia event, held in Atlanta on March 13-15. Thompson and Veal will compete in the 2014 SkillsUSA Championships held in Kansas City, Missouri, June 22 through 27, as part of SkillsUSA’s
50th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC). They will be among more than 6,000 career and technical education students – all state contest winners – who are expected to compete in 99 different trade, techni-cal and leadership fields at the national conference.

When it comes to small business, national recognition is hard to come by. That’s why when Home Helpers of Georgia and Alabama took home The Pioneer Award last week from a nation-al conference, it was big news. Beth Dow and her husband Phillip are the owners of a local Home Helpers franchise here in Coweta, Troup, Muscogee and Lee (Ala.) Coun-ties. It was their local senior-care fran-chise that earned The Pioneer Award for exemplifying innovative thinking and creativity in the pursuit of excellent customer/client care. “To know that out of 300 franchise owners that represent close to 600 dif-ferent territories, that we ‘stand out’ … well, that’s just cool,” Dow said. “We have been in business for seven years now and this has been the hardest thing I have ever loved to do.” Dow, who contributes a Senior Care Q&A column to The Coweta Shopper, says her company started with a staff of only one employee in Auburn, Ala. “We’ve grown to a staff of 90 in Coweta, Troup, Muscogee and Lee Counties,” said Dow. “Being recognized for our hard work and dedication to our clients by our franchise is affirming and humbling.” Home Helpers Franchise Systems recognizes its franchise owners annu-ally at a national conference, this year held at Las Vegas. Newnan was a surprisingly prosperous town in the late 1800s. � e same railroads that made Newnan a logical choice for a hospital town during the Civil War supported bustling industries in tex-tile production and manufacturing. Fire insurance maps from the 1880s to 1911 show that Newnan’s downtown was the location of beautiful homes, cotton warehouses, and steel manufacturing, as well as venues for entertainment and a wide variety of available goods and services. Although some of Newnan’s historically signi� cant architecture built during this era has been lost through the years, much of it can be seen in the present day.
� e 1868 Virginia House Hotel is one of the old-est surviving structures in Newnan’s downtown. � e foundation of this hotel was the former Golden Star Hotel, and dates to the mid-19th century. � is structure operated as a hotel for over 90 years and is now used for commercial o� ces. It is rumored that several famous individuals including Je� erson Davis, president of the Confederate States of Amer-ica, once visited this hotel.
Built in 1895, the Murray Warehouse Block is a rectangular, red brick building that once served as a cotton warehouse. � e building features white trimmed dentil molding, granite belt courses, brick piers, and cast-iron storefronts. During the late 19th century the Murray Warehouse Block conducted cotton trading business as well as printing busi-ness. � e building currently stands in its original location the corner of Brown and West Washington Streets. Although it is not used for its original pur-pose, it serves as a reminder of Newnan’s roots in the cotton industry.
Today, the Confederate Memorial statue can be found on the east side of the Coweta County Courthouse, however, that is not its original loca-tion. It once stood in the middle of the street on the intersection of Je� erson and Washington. Due to increased automobile tra� c during the 1920s, the statue was moved from the center of Je� erson Street by sliding it along with logs, then placed on a block of ice so that as it melted, it lowered the statue into place in it’s current spot!
Alongside these commercial buildings, Newnan built several beautiful historic churches in the late 1800s and � rst decade of the 20th century, three of which are still used today. � ese structures share

some common architectural trends for downtown churches built in Georgia during this period. Con-gregations that had previously worshipped in log cabins in the town’s early years prospered and built larger, more permanent sanctuaries for their grow-ing congregations.
Newnan’s First Baptist Church was founded in 1828 by seven pioneers to the area. Construction began on the church’s previous historic sanctuary in 1845, and was later used as a hospital during the Civil War. By 1884 First Baptist outgrew the old, wood-frame church and built the historic sanctu-ary seen today. Construction was � nished in time for First Baptist to host the Georgia Baptist Con-vention in April of 1886.
Another one of downtown Newnan’s historic churches, Central Baptist Church, on the corner of Broad Street and Brown, was built in 1898. � is beautiful church features similar elements of late gothic revival architecture as other historic Newnan churches including masonry construction, square corner towers, and stained glass.
� e Mount Vernon First Baptist Church is credit-ed as being the � rst African American, Baptist con-gregation in Newnan. � e beautiful, brick, gothic revival church located on Pinson Street was built in 1899, 36 years a� er the congregation’s founding.
With the Male Academy and secondary school for women, known as College Temple, education was not overlooked in Newnan. Newnan’s Carn-egie Library was the � rst Carnegie Library in Geor-gia, and is the only one in the United States that has returned to its original use. Built in 1903, the Carnegie Library features a reading room, meet-ing space, and hosts a number of events for all ages. � is building has not undergone any signi� cant changes to it’s exterior since it’s construction and therefore looks very much like it did over a hun-dred years ago. Some of the original hexagonal pavers and granite curbing can still be seen in the sidewalk outside the Carnegie.
� e Reese Opera House, which opened in early 1883 welcomed comedians, singers, and other per-formers to Newnan, but also housed retail such as a jewelry store, dry goods, a tobacco store, and a grocer over the decades, and later was the location for the Southern School of Telegraphy.
� e Gem � eater was once located a few doors down from the Alamo’s current location. � e the-
ater opened during the era of silent � lms, and can be seen on a 1911 map labeled “moving pictures”. � e movie theater featured one screen and 241 seats.
A few doors down, the space that now houses � e Alamo � eater at 19 West Court Square was built in 1880 as a commercial building, home to a harness shop, general store, and a butcher through the decades. A blacksmith, and later a barbeque stand once occupied the alley space behind. � e building was converted into a movie theater with one screen and 551 seats in 1928.
Downtown Newnan continues to be a thriving commercial area when many small town squares in Georgia are struggling to adapt to changes in the American lifestyle since their heyday. Newnan’s historic commercial district is home to restaurants, shopping, and a wide array of businesses much like it was from 1880-1920 while meeting the needs of a growing and changing population.
� e historic Newnan Hospital, built in 1925 will soon be the latest location for the University of West Georgia in Newnan. � is practice of adaptive reuse ensures that historic structures are preserved for future generations by being converted to meet the needs of the community.
� e buildings built in Newnan’s historic court square during the late 1800s stand today as a re-minder of the town’s unique history and bear the markings of many changes and trends of the de-cades in between. Perhaps most importantly, Newnan’s historic downtown provides current citizens, old families and newcomers alike, with a tangible link to the past through its physical struc-tures. Newnan’s historic districts give our commu-nity a distinct character and foster a sense of place for those who are visiting as well as those who are lucky enough to live among such rich history.

Toenail fungus infection (“onychomycosis”) is an extremely common infection of the nails by fungus. The infection is stubborn, diffi cult to treat, and results in unsightly and often painful toenails. Treatments are often slow, time-consuming and far from 100% effective.

n Better late than never. That simple phrase is exactly the way Master Cosmetologist/Owner Charlotte Corley approached a two-week delay in getting her new full-service, family hair salon open. “We’re done, finally,” Corley said Saturday, June 7, the official first day of business for The Boulevard Salon in Newnan’s Avery Park. The delay was caused by the electronic data system of the Georgia Board of Cosmetology being down. So instead of opening the week of May 19-24, The Boulevard Salon entered its first full week of business 12 days ago. “On a positive note, the delay allowed us to get everything ready and operational in the salon,” Corley said. “We’re ready for business.” Corley said if the salon had opened when original-ly scheduled, some finishing touches would have still been ongoing. Corley had high praise for the City of Newnan and its business licensure process. “The City (of Newnan) was so easy,” she said. “They were so easy to deal with. I mean, they were wonder-ful.” The Boulevard Salon is located at 10 The Boule-vard, Suite 107, just behind Jekyll & Hyde’s. The shop is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, and closed Sundays. And business to date has been surprisingly brisk. So far, so good. “It’s happy in here,” said Corley. That’s the response she was hoping for and now getting from customers visiting The Boulevard Salon.
