E ach June, many of us celebrate Father’s Day with gifts of appre-ciation, a visit, and maybe even the ubiquitous necktie, some golfballs, or box of candy. I had a father for about 45 years and
have been a father for 45 years (and no, I’m not 90 yet), so it seems that with all that experience, I should have made all A’s on the “Dad’s Report Card”. Well, I don’t think I got an “F” as a father, but I would probably do things a little differently if I were given a “Do Over”. But I suspect most of us feel that way, don’t we?
Perhaps one of the most important things a father can do for his chil-dren is to be a good role model. “Don’t be concerned that your chil-
dren don’t listen to you. But be very concerned that they see everything you do”, wrote Truett Cathy. He also proposed that one of the best ways to teach children respect for authority is to model our own adherence to the chain of command. And he suggested that fathers (and moth-ers) can do this by worshiping and respecting God and by obeying the rule of law. I once had a chance to talk with Mr. Cathy - he must have been a wonderful father.
TV personality (yes, from the “old days”), Art Linkletter, had a good bit of wisdom about rais-ing children when he said, “When we, as fathers, reach out to our child for good, it is perhaps the most important thing we will do in a lifetime”. My “Do-Over” list might include a little more honest encouragement, reminding my children of their strengths and their opportunities every day. And when we share our time with our children, even the little things often become lifetime memories for them. As a young father, I would share true (if somewhat embellished) stories of my own childhood with my two little daughters. For years they would say, “Tell us about the time you crashed the go cart into the sticker bushes, Dad”. Although having heard this story and many others a hundred times, they wanted to hear it from me again. I was shar-ing my time with them.
Our children are living messengers we will send into the future - a time we shall not see. We will not all do great things, but we can all be great at little things. And these little things - positive examples and quality time spent, accumulate, day after day, hopefully having created an honest, loving, responsible adult. The visit, the golf balls, the necktie or the candy will just be the “icing on the cake”!

In Jeremiah 29:11 we read, “For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Perhaps we, as fathers, can pass that example on to our sons and daughters. And what greater gift can a father have than to see his child going to our Heavenly Father with that same trust.

Growing things is part of Pat Farmer’s DNA. Her father’s enjoyment of vegetable gardening began when he was a child on his parent’s farm. In addi-tion to vegetable gardening, he loved dogwood trees, a love inherited by Pat. Pat has several dogwoods which find their full expression every spring as they bloom among the azaleas and flowering bulbs. From her mother, Pat acquired a tenacity and patience for growing all types of plants. “My Mom can make anything grow. I have many gardenias and camel-lias that she started from cuttings. She can propa-gate anything. She never gives up on a plant.”
Pat’s favorite part of gardening is “watching the process, from small plant to big plant.” But she didn’t begin that process until after she got mar-ried. While living in San Diego, she found that she could grow anything there all year round. “We had geraniums as big as a hedge along with a wonder-ful peach tree in the front yard. It was an easy place to be successful.”
When Pat moved to Newnan 11 years ago, she re-membered her father’s stories of his family’s dairy farm here in Coweta County. She felt at home right away. Today, her mother actually lives on that farm.
As for Pat, she has meticulously developed venues around her home that are a personal expression of her green thumb. She maintains a “green garden” because there is so much shade on her property. She uses many native shade plants in her yard and has one area where she has an amazing Japanese maple that looks ablaze when the sun hits it. Currently, she is collecting ferns because she discovered that deer are not drawn to them. Keeping the deer away is one of her biggest challenges.
As Pat settled into the local community, she still had a gardening item on her bucket list. When she retired, she became a Coweta County Master Gar-dener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) and was able to check that item off her list. For the last seven years, she has actively pursued her love of learning about plants and gardening by sharing her knowledge with others.
As a Coweta MGEV, Pat is active in many of the educational programs offered. She is Co-chair of the James E. McGuffey Nature Center project. She is using the process of making the Nature Center one of the best outdoor educa-tional venues in the county as an opportunity to learn more about native plants of Georgia. She, along with other MGEVs, has put in many hours working to eradicate invasive species such as Privet and non-native Elaeagnus from the natural area at the Center. She is a wonderful educa-tor and assists with Nature Center trail tours.
Just as her parents passed their love for gardening on to Pat, she also enjoys shar-ing her love of gardening. She serves on the MGEV Youth Education commit-tee where she volunteers with the Newnan/Coweta

Boys and Girls Club. She is wonderful with children and enjoys encouraging them to garden and grow their own food.
While Pat contributes so much to the MGEV pro-gram, she credits her fellow MGEVs with teaching her new things. “I love to learn,” she says, “The other Master Gardeners have so much collective knowl-edge. Just listening to them talk helps to make me a better gardener.”
Making gardening fun and interesting is what Pat does. Whether gar-dening at home or edu-cating others through volunteering with the MGEVs, it is easy to see that her parent’s garden-ing legacy benefits all who have had the op-portunity to learn from Pat.

Owners Joel and Kimberly Dover opened the doors to Newnan Music Center on Bullsboro Drive in December of 2015. Below is a recent Question-and-Answer by The Coweta Shopper with Joel.
n Now that you’ve been open about a half year, what do you think? “The music business is a blast. We have had so much fun with the business and have thoroughly enjoyed serving the Newnan community. We feel strongly that whether serving a local church in need of music equipment, helping an aspiring star gear up for a relocation to Nashville, fitting a student with their first instruments and les-sons, we are taking care of people and adding the value of joy to their lives through music.”
n Why did you open Newnan Music Center? “I was a full time Pastor for 15 years, and our family moved to Newnan in 2011 when we were called to serve a local church. In 2014, we left the church and later that year sensed God’s call to start a new kind of church (Calvary Chapel) in the area. It meant that I would no longer be making my living as a full time Minister with a salary, and so we began to look at our options. Kimberly and I were both musicians from the time we were kids, and music had always brought a great deal of joy to our lives.”
n What does the term ‘Music Center’ mean? “We are a full-service music store, which means that we sell just about everything related to the musical in-strument business. We sell both acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, drums, world per-cussion, PA speakers and sound systems, band and orchestra instruments, plus accessories such as ca-bles, drum sticks, clarinet reeds, and guitar strings...to name a few. We proudly sell Washburn, Alvarez, Yamaha, and Dean guitars and basses and sell qual-ity percussion products by Gibralter, Remo, Zildjian, Aquarian, Evans, Vic Firth, and others. Our band and orchestra brands include Yamaha, Remo, Jupiter, and a variety of others.”
n Do you rent Band Instruments? “We have an aggressively-priced rental program for Coweta band students that offers peace of mind and flexibility. There is no need anymore to drive to Fayetteville, Douglasville, Riverdale, or anywhere else to rent a band instrument or buy accessories. We sell and rent quality new and used band and orchestra instru-ments, and stock the necessary accessories.”
n If someone wanted to learn to play an instru-ment, can you help? “We offer in-store lessons in a private lesson room several days each week. At the present time, we offer guitar, bass, ukulele, keyboard, vocal, and banjo lessons. We also have local partner-ships in place for off-site lessons.”
n Why shop at Newnan Music Center? “We are a local business owned and operated by neighbors who live here in Coweta County. The board of directors at our store is Joel and Kimberly, and our three young children. Dollars spent at our store stay in this com-munity. Q. What’s wrong with my fruit trees? There are dead limbs all over them.
A. Fireblight is a common, bacterial infection that can affect plants in the Rosaceae family includ-ing apple, crabapple, plum, cherry, and pear trees. It can also affect ornamental plants in this same family such as flowering quince, serviceberry, rose and oth-ers. Infection occurs during blooming and is favored by wet conditions.
The weather may be dry now, but if you recall, sev-eral weeks ago we had near perfect weather condi-tions for this disease. Fireblight often enters the tree through flowers or
wounds in the spring and can be spread to healthy plants by rain, wind and even insects. The bacteria can spread rapidly through plant tissue in warm, hu-mid weather and the disease can survive the winter in sunken cankers on infected branches.Disease SymptomsFireblight is easily identified by the bent ends of
young limbs that die from the terminal end. They appear burnt or dark in color and resemble what is commonly referred to as a “shepherd’s crook”. Dead leaves and fruit will remain on the branches.Disease ManagementThere are some things you can do to manage the disease:• Prune out infected branches 8 inches below the damage. Avoid pruning when the plants are wet (such as early in the morning or after a rain).• When pruning, disinfect your tools between each
cut by dipping them in 70 percent isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or a 10 percent bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water solution). Wash and oil sheers when finished.• Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilization, especially in the summer, when new growth is most susceptible to fireblight infection.• Avoid splashing water that can spread the dis-ease.• Chemical control op-tions aren’t always ef-fective and needs to be applied as a preventative method. In other words, once you see the infec-tion, it’s too late for fun-gicides.There are also things you can do to prevent the disease:Plant resistant varieties.When warm, humid,
wet weather happens during flowering and leaf emergence, spray plants with a fungicide containing basic copper sulfate or an antibiotic to reduce infection. Always read and follow label di-rections and contact the Extension office for more details on proper appli-cation of fungicides. i i i
A. Magnolia trees are relatively “easy keepers”. They don’t have many pest or disease problems, but we get a lot of calls this time of year from homeown-ers who are concerned about their magnolias be-cause they look a little droopy.Magnolias are dropping old leaves and putting on
new leaves right now. The old leaves droop pret-ty dramatically this time of year and it seem to be worse when they are thirsty. Since magnolias hate dry soil, you might consider watering during dry

Removing the Sellers Personality from a Home
One of the most diffi cult objections that I run into with sellers is convincing them to remove their personality from the home they are about to sell.Th is past week I met with 2 sellers that
had both lived in their homes for 20+ years. Needless to say, they had accumu-lated a lot of treasures, children’s items left from years ago, art work, collections, etc. Th ese items are what made their homes theirs. It’s diffi cult as a seller to be objective
about how to decorate to sell their own home because they’ve spent the last 20+ years decorating to live. Th ey have fi lled their rooms with furniture, accessories and colors that they love and having an expert come in and help them “edit” their belongings is time and money well
spent. Helping them to understand that we
need to remove most of these cherished items can be a challenging job, but it has to be done. It’s part of the job to help them understand that a buyer is not go-ing to understand their treasures like the
seller does. Th at it will look like clutter to a buyer instead of beloved décor.Now, back to the 2 sellers from this past
week … one had already began the de-cluttering process before I arrived and it wasn’t a hard sale to suggest a little bit more de-cluttering and other work need-ed to be completed. Th e other had been thinking about what
needed to be accomplished for quite some time and kept nodding her head and whispering to me, that she had been trying to do this for years. Th at wasn’t a diffi cult sale either. I can’t wait to see the fruits of their labor in reducing that “honey-do” list for a new buyer and they also know that they won’t be abandoned by their professional home stager and I’ll be only a phone call, text or e-mail away.

Th is was the “Mini-van” of the old days. Ugly, unreliable, underpow-ered and dangerous. But it would seat 7, and you could take some of the seats out and haul a refrigera-tor! So in about 1979, I purchased a used 1971 VW “bus” exactly like the one pictured above – same col-or, same year. Since my wife never learned to drive a straight shift (old language for a 3 or 4 speed manual transmission), this “bread truck” was considered all mine! In the late 60’s and early 70’s, the
“original” hippies used the older version of these vans as their trans-portation and their home. Th ey would paint them “psychodelic” colors and include “peace” symbols and other graffi ti. Our family van, however, was factory stock and we
used it for road trips. We would make a pallet of blankets in the back for our two young daughters so they could take a nap if needed. Nadine and I took the front two seats (almost like straight chairs) which sat high, giving us a 360 de-gree panoramic view. And as I re-member, there were no seat belts, and since the motor was in the back, the only separation between us and tragedy was about a half inch of “tin” along with that com-pletely vertical front windshield! Eventually that van became “wore out, broke down and tore up”, as some would say. We purchased a new 1981 model which was a lit-tle safer and more reliable, but it never quite had that “cool” factor of our old “orange bread truck”!

TeatimeTeatimeExplore tea’s history at the Charleston Tea Plantation
Among the vintage magazines I have collected is the August 1893 is-sue of the American Agriculturist. Th e cover features images from Pine-hurst Tea Gardens in Summerville, South Carolina, and inside is an ar-ticle by Dr. Charles Shepard, founder of the gardens.
Shepard’s article discusses his early tea-growing eff orts in South Caro-lina. It begins, “During the last year, and for the fi rst time in the history of the United States—so far as I am in-formed—tea was raised and cured on an American farm, and successfully sold in our own markets. It is true that the beginning was small; the young tea gardens comprised but a few acres, and only small and tender leaf was picked; the total production of cured tea not exceeding 150 pounds.”
Although the tea was successfully grown, it was not a success fi nancial-ly because of the high cost of ship-ping tea domestically. Th e tea plants languished aft er Shepard’s death in 1915, and the gardens were closed until the 1960s.
In 1963, the Pinehurst tea plants were transplanted to Wadmalaw Is-land in South Carolina, and that farm eventually became what is today the Charleston Tea Plantation, America’s largest working tea plantation. Now owned by the Bigelow Tea Company, the plantation off ers free tours, which I highly recommend if you happen to be visiting Charleston this summer.
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of attending the First Flush Festival at the Charleston Tea Plantation. Th e “fi rst fl ush” refers to the new growth
of leaves on the tea plants in the spring, and in Charleston and around the world, tea lovers covet these fi rst fl ush teas!
But perhaps what I enjoyed most about my visit to the Charleston Tea Plantation was learning about the production of tea. In the fac-tory where tea is made, I got to see the “withering bed,” which can hold 5,000 pounds of tea leaves and where the leaves rest while the moisture is removed. Th en the leaves go through a cylindrical machine with “teeth”
where the tea leaves are shredded. During the shredding, the tea leaf ’s liquid cells are ruptured, exposing the leaf to oxygen. Leaves then go to an oxidation bed, and their time in the oxidation bed determines wheth-er the tea is black, green or oolong.
I also took an optional trolley tour of the grounds, where I got to see the “Green Giant,” the tea-harvesting ma-chine. And of course I couldn’t end my visit without bringing home a few trinkets from the gift shop, including a video, a mug, and of course, some delicious tea.
Some area grocery stores (and every Whole Foods store I’ve vis-ited) carry teas from Charleston Tea Plantation. My latest favorite is their ready-to-drink green tea with man-go, but I haven’t had a bad tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation yet.

I have a job, a family, and would like some free time. How can I convince her that she needs help other than me?” One Very Tired DaughterBETH: This could be stemming from many differ-ent emotions that your mom is experiencing. She may be worried that if she agrees to extra help she would be giving up her in-dependence. She may use the extra chores and tasks, as a way to get to spend time with you. She may be lonely. She may also be concerned that she does not have the funds to pay for outside help. You have got to sit down and have a talk with her. Explain to her that being independent does not mean not getting help. Being independent means being in control of the help you get. And if she is using you
to do her tasks and chores, she is not in control, you are. If she hired someone to come and help her, they would come when she needed them, she would be in total control of the help she receives. Tell her that you want to spend time with her and be her daughter. You want to go shopping, to a mov-ie, to get pedicures – not spend all your time doing tasks and chores where you are spending more time with her laundry than with her. Ask her about friends. Has she become isolated due to not driving? If she had a driver, could she re-connect with friends, family and hobbies? And you will have to talk to her about finances. If she is worried about money, does she have reason to worry? It may be time to talk realistically about her financial health and what she will need as she ages. Delaying the talk isn’t going to make it any easi-er. In fact, just the opposite. Take your mom out to lunch and talk about how everything she needs can get accomplished without wearing you out.

Summer Movie Series, Camps great ways to entertain Kids during summer months Summer vacation is here, and kids will have the next two months to relax and have fun. If you’re searching for ways to entertain the kids this sum-mer, summer movie series and camps are a great option. Carmike Cinemas and Regal Entertainment Group are pre-senting summer movie series for children at local theaters. Kids can watch some of the latest movies for a fraction of the regular price of admission. In addition, the University of West Georgia is offering a va-riety of week-long summer and youth camps in Newnan and Carrollton for children of all ages.
