On November 11, 2015 the students of HHS congregated to show their grati-
tude towards those who have and currently are serving our great nation. In
the Veterans Day Assembly, Jody welcomed the student body along with
our special visitors who served bravely to keep us free.
After JROTC presented our flag and Chamber Choir sang The Star Span-
gled Banner, President Thomas Christiansen opened up with a beautiful
speech about the National Anthem and the freedom that we all enjoy. Ellie
McDonald led the student body through the songs of the different branches
of the military. Anyone who served or has a family member who served or is
serving was invited to stand during that branch’s song.
A movie was shown that quoted Ronald Reagan in his first inaugural ad-
dress while talking about Veterans and those who are currently serving our
country. He stated, “Those who say that we’re in a time when there are no
heroes, they just don't know where to look.”
The students here at Hurricane High were honored to hear from veteran
Rowland Hall who served in the United States Army during World War II.
His spirit of patriotism was spread throughout the hearts of all those who
listened as he told stories and expressed gratitude for the opportunity that
he had. Many who were there in the auditorium on this day gained a great-
er understanding and appreciation of the American flag and what it stands
for. As stated by the Vice president at Hurricane High, Ellie Mcdonald said,
“Some gave all and all gave some.” May we ever remember those who died
so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Everyone loves Thanksgiving! They'd probably be
lying if they said it wasn't because of the food, but
sometimes having the same recipes for the tradition-
al Thanksgiving foods can become boring. So, if you
love Thanksgiving, but want to try some fun new
recipes to change it up, then here are some of my
favorites:
Tired of the traditional cranberry sauce, or just don't
like it at all? Try this easy recipe!
Cranberry - Orange Sauce
1 whole orange
1 bag of fresh cranberries
Sugar to taste (i.e., quite a bit).
Put fruits in a food processor and process until you've
reached the de-
sired consisten-
cy. If your pro-
cessor is small,
you may have to
place just a bit in
at a time. Once
all is processed,
mix together, and
add sugar.

Thanksgiving
What is Thanksgiving?
It’s that time when the leaves change colors and the hot days turn
cold. It’s Thanksgiving season. Many may think of food: turkey,
mashed potatoes, and stuffing. Although it isn’t too far off, food is-
n’t what Thanksgiving is all about. Long ago, when the pilgrims
arrived on the Mayflower, they knew nothing on how to survive on
their own. The cold was coming fast. The natives came and offered
help when they realized the pilgrims meant no harm. They taught
them how to grow corn, use fish to fertilize our fields, and a lot
more. Being very thankful for the
help, the pilgrims invited the In-
dians to a feast in the fall. The
meal consisted of deer, corn,
shellfish, and roasted meat as
they all ate together. Even
though food is a big part of the
holiday, remember those who
made it so we could enjoy the food
we are eating. Happy Thanksgiv-
ing!

Each year, everyone anticipates the war
zone known as ‘Black Friday.’ The events
displayed can be entertaining, but crazy!
Summer Stratton expresses her views, “I
like how everything is on sale. It’s funny
seeing people get in fights over things and
running, pushing past people to get good
deals! I just go for the comfy socks!” As you
can see, things can get pretty exciting!
However, they do tend to get dangerous
every now and then… In the past, there
have been men physically harming people
to get what they want. If an individual does
decide to take a risk, they could be very
profitable, but vulnerable as well. Be sure
to wear running shoes; Anything can hap-
pen!
We all love pumpkin pie, but just wait until you try this reci-
pe!
Pumpkin-mousse pie
8 ounces of soft cream cheese
1 tablespoon of milk
1 tablespoon of sugar (optional)
1 1/2 cups of Cool Whip
1 graham-cracker pie crust
1 cup of milk
2 4-ounce packages of vanilla-
pudding mix
1 16-ounce can of pumpkin
1 to 2 teaspoons of pumpkin-pie spice.
Mix 1 cup of milk and 2 4-ounce packages of vanilla-pudding
until well blended. Add 1 16-ounce can of pumpkin and the
pumpkin-pie spice. Again, blend well. In a separate bowl,
mix 8 ounces of soft cream cheese, 1 tablespoon of sugar
(optional), and 1 tablespoon of milk until smooth. Add to the
pumpkin mix. Mix until well blended. Fold in 1 1/2 cups of
Cool Whip. Pour into the graham-cracker pie crust. Chill 3
hours.

FBLA is a high school business
club that stands for Future Busi-
ness Leaders of America. Fun fact
about the FBLA! In the past 10
years our school has made it in the
top 10 in Nationals! FBLA shoots
to accomplish their goal which is
“To Prepare Students for Life”.
They also have business tours
around Washington County and
have an annual business tour to
Las Vegas, Nevada.
In this business club they also do
service projects like the can food
drives in the winter time, along
with competitions that take them
to State. In the past 10 years our
school has been able to go beyond
State and go to Nationals. Keep it

PAGE 3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3
At Hurricane High school we have a year
round club called HOSA. Many wonder
what HOSA stands for; it stands for
Health Occupation Students of America.
The purpose of HOSA is to help students
develop leadership and technical HOSA
skill competencies through a program of
motivation. Students will develop the
leadership skills by planning activities
and also by going to different competi-
tions.
Kira Brown, a member of HOSA said
“HOSA means Health Occupation Stu-
dents of America, future health profes-
sionals.” HOSA goes to competitions.
Many students of Hurricane High school
say that HOSA is a good club to join if you
are looking to go into the healthcare field.

Japanese Club is up and running again on every A-
Day Thursday during lunch in room 207. This club is
just one of the many organizations at HHS. The club
presidency includes Melissa Mangum (President),
Emily Mildenhall (Vice President), and Kammi
Wright (Secretary). Anybody who is interested in
Japan is welcome to join and attend the biweekly
meetings. Melissa Mangum said, “Japanese Club
introduces students to the Japanese culture without
them having to take the class- and having a lot of
fun. But we mostly just have a lot of fun.” The club
has a new activity every time, such as
origami, anime, games, etc. Some students from Jap-
anese Club even marched in the Homecoming Pa-
rade. So if you’re a fan of folding paper, watching
Miyazaki films, or
being submersed
into a different cul-
ture- Japanese

Robots are becoming a large part of
today's society. Hurricane High
has a fresh, brand spankin’ new,
Robotics Club. This club consists
of 5 members led by Mr. Nathan
Johnson. Mr. Johnson reported
that the team plans on competing
in “The First Tech Challenge”, re-
gional at SUU and state at The U
of U, this February. Although some
may think the robot they are mak-
ing is a fighting robot, it most defi-
nitely isn’t. The robot they are
building is going to do simple tasks
like push buttons, push small ob-
jects, pick up and carry small ob-
jects, and even climb up bars. This
pushbot will be controlled through
two gaming controllers that are
connected to a smartphone. The
robotics team has completely built
and and wired this robot for com-
petition. Though the hardware is
ready the software isn’t. Once the
team programs the controls, and
mounts the phone to the robot,
they can test it and make improve-
ments.

Wrestlers are some of the toughest
and strongest kids here at Hurri-
cane High School, not only do they
condition themselves for short
bursts of energy to take their oppo-
nent down, but also a lot of stamina
and endurance to outlast their op-
ponent. Wrestling is not just about
how strong or how big you are, It
takes a lot of skill and practice. You
have to practice one move hundreds
of times to execute correctly. When
Kyler Blackmore was asked about
wrestling, he said, “Wrestling is one
of the hardest sports I have ever
done; I have never gotten so close to
throwing up than I have with wres-
tling!” Make sure to come out and
support your fellow classmates and
sexy beasts at the upcoming wres-
tling matches.
Fall is here, which means football season has begun! Week
nine is already underway and only 4 of the 32 teams are
undefeated as of November 1st. The teams are: Denver
Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, and
the Carolina Panthers. These four teams are an unbelieva-
ble 7-0! The least convincing is the Cincinnati Bengals.
They haven’t been to a Super Bowl since 1989, where they
lost to the San Francisco 49ers. The Carolina Panthers
have also never won a Super Bowl- although they won
their conference championship in 2003. The Denver Bron-
cos suffered a painful loss in Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8
making it the worst loss in Super Bowl history. They have
won a total of two Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998. The
New England
Patriots have
won four Super
Bowls. They won
in 2001, 2003,
2004, and 2014.
The 2015-2016
season has been
a good one, and
there are more
great games to
come!

PAGE 4 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3
With Summer coming to an end and the cold
taking over, it’s time for fall and winter
sports and believe it or not, swim team is a
fall sport. Swimmers have to drive to the
Washington County Rec. Center to practice
every Monday through Friday. They had
their first swim meet of the year on Friday,
November 6th at Sand Hollow Aquatic Cen-
ter that stretched into Saturday, November
7th. It’s an invitational meet, so anyone in
Southern Utah who wanted to come, was
welcome to.
When asked why he enjoys swim team, Tal-
on Heaton said, “During my first high school
season of swimming, I gained confidence. I
loved swim and became better. Before swim
I was bullied and wasn’t very popular. Now I
am on varsity and popular among my peers
on the team. It has infinitely changed my
life for the better.” Come to a meet and sup-
port your swim team.

Contrary to popular belief, soccer does exist in the
United States of America, and the playoffs are current-
ly under way. The New York Red Bulls lead the East-
ern Conference with 18 wins, 10 losses, and 6 draws.
Leading the Western Conference, FC Dallas advances
with 18 wins, 10 losses, and 6 draws. At the start of
playoffs D.C. United came up with a 2-1 win over New
England. Seattle beat the LA Galaxy in a 3-2 match.
Montreal put Toronto F.C. in their place by forcing a 3-
0 win. After a four goal shootout and extra time, the
Portland Timbers knocked out Sporting Kansas City in
a penalty shootout lasting until the eleventh round.
The New York Red Bulls beat D.C. United 1-0. Port-
land and Vancouver went all 90 minutes with a shut
out from both sides. Columbus suffered a 2-1 loss to
Montreal. Seattle came out victorious over FC Dallas
ending the
match with 2
goals to 1. Due to
the CONCACAF
World Cup, the
semi-finals of the
MLS playoffs
have been post-
poned and will
start back up on
November 22.

Last week the Hurricane High School’s Orchestra
had their annual yearly Halloween concert. The
concert went very well and the orchestra played
great. They have now began learning new Christ-
mas songs to play at their Christmas Concert in
December. Kayla Larson, a senior here at Hurri-
cane High said, “Orchestra is a lot of fun. I have
made some friends and memories that I will never
forget.”
The sophomores play in the Advanced Orchestra,
while the juniors and seniors play in the Chamber
Orchestra. Larson also said, “I love the music we
get to play in the Chamber Orchestra because it’s
more challenging and fun.” The orchestra works
hard throughout the entire year perfecting and
learning new songs. The students put a lot of time
and hard work into trying to play their best. So
make sure to come out and support them through-
out the year.

that is tough, but once they get passed it, I
love watching them work with the clay
when they know what they are doing.” Ce-
ramics is a great fun class, if you love art
and being creative it is definitely the class
for you.
Ceramics is one of the many
art classes here at Hurricane High
School. In this class you are taught
how to make pots, bowls, mugs,
and other ceramic masterpieces.
Natasha Eves, a former ceramics
student said, “Ceramics is great
because you get to be creative and
have fun while getting a grade for
it. My favorite part about the class
was working on the wheel.” The
wheel (potter's wheel) is where the
clay is placed and turned making it
easier to make many different ce-
ramic pieces.
What you make helps express who
you are and what you feel. When
asked how he feels about teaching
Mr. Evenson says, “I love teaching,
I have been doing it for 20 years. I

On a mission to Mars, Mark Wat-
ney, (Matt Damon) and five other
astronauts are caught in a storm.
After it hits, inconveniently, an
antenna flies off a settlement and
hits Mark, knocking him out of
sight, and unconscious. He is as-
sumed dead, and reluctantly, the
rest of the crew are forced to leave
him, and blast back off into space.
“With only meager supplies, he
must draw upon his ingenuity, wit
and spirit to subsist and find a way
to signal Earth that he is alive.” -
IMDB.com Mark goes through con-
stant trial, solving problem after
problem with creativity, and crafti-
ness. “The Martian” is critically
rated as an 8.2/10 starred film, and
lives up to it’s reputation. In this
intense, heart-wrenching, critically
acclaimed movie, Mark Watney’s
only goal is to survive. David Be-
hunin exclaims, “The movie was
intense, thrilling and surprising!
Overall, it was a great film!”
Do you remember when somebody
said, “I love you” and it was quickly
followed by, “You love me, we’re
best friends like friends should be?”
Was Reptar World in Paris ever
your dream vacation? Can you
swerve? Is the Carlton your go to
move on the dance floor? Well, if
any of these describe your child-
hood, you might be a 90’s kid! And
let’s face it, the 90’s didn’t really
come to Utah until 1998 and it
stayed until 2005.
So, you most likely remember at
least a few things from your child-
hood, but do you ever hear your par-
ents asking their friends and sib-
lings if they remember ‘that one
time when the pencil was round so
it wouldn’t properly rewind the
cassette tape’ or ‘when their
parents splurged a little and
rented a VCR player to watch
with the babysitter’ ? Maybe
you wondered why adults and
well cultured teenagers have
been making reference to
Marty McFly all. year. long. So,
in order to answer your ques-
tions, we’re taking it back a little
farther than just to 1999. We’re tak-
ing it back to 1985.
On November 5, the students of
HHS gathered in the high school
parking lot to enjoy a drive-in thea-
ter night in the crisp autumn air.
There was popcorn and hot choco-
late, blankets and pillows, couches
and truck beds, but most important-
ly, there were students gathering
together to enjoy Back To The Fu-
ture. Although it was awkward
when Marty’s mom kept ‘going for
him’, the movie was a hit, and the
students of HHS left with a desire
to watch the sequel.

Have you ever wanted to surprise those around you
with useless knowledge? Do you long for the oppor-
tunity to make others question your sanity by knowing
facts that are so random that it’s quite possibly fake,
but it is actually 100% true? Well, that is what this
article was designed for. Here are some facts that may
or may not make your brain explode:
Did you know that dogs have baby teeth and adult
teeth just like humans?
Foxes in fact do not ‘ring-ding-ding-ding-ding’ but they
yip like a little puppy.
Pocahontas is just a nickname that means ‘naughty
one’. Her real name was Matoaka.
Goats have rectangular pupils.
In the first edit of the Hannah Montana script, the
show was going to be called Alexis Texas.
The final random fact for today is that giraffes clean
their ears with their 18 inch tongues!
Go ahead and wow your parents with these interesting
factoids. Just remember not to act like that weirdo on
Zack and Cody who had the useless facts.

The Raging Hurricane
PAGE 7 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3
Current Events
On October 25th Hurricane Patricia hit Cuixmala, Mexico. Hurri-
cane Patricia was the strongest hurricane ever observed in the East-
ern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; Patricia was recorded as a category
5 hurricane, which is the highest ranked category for a hurricane.
Many along the coast were evacuated; including those who were va-
cationing in Cuixmala. Many feared the death toll would be very
large, and were surprised to hear that zero people were killed by this
raging storm. Paige Van Pelt, a Hurricane High School senior, said,
“That is crazy that nobody died in this huge storm.”
During the storm, many homes and buildings were destroyed. Van
Pelt also said, “My prayers go out to all those who lost their homes. I
hope they are able to rebuild all the buildings that were torn apart
soon.” The winds from the storm got up to a maximum of 200 mph,
while the central pressure
fell to 879 millibars. The
low pressure broke the rec-
ord of any hurricane ever
on record. The people of
Cuixmala, Mexico are very
lucky to have made it
through Hurricane Patri-
cia. We hope they are able
to get their town up and
back to normal soon.

Emily Whitehead was a 6-year old little girl who had
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She had been fighting
cancer for most of her life and had gone through several
different treatments. Emily and her family both knew
that she had little time left and were willing to try any-
thing to have more time with her. They found a clinical
trial that Emily qualified for that involved taking inac-
tive HIV T- cells and injecting them into Emily’s
body. They didn’t know if the treatment would cure
her cancer, or just slow the cancers development.
"What we are trying to do is retrain the immune sys-
tem to recognize and kill tumor cells." Said Dr. June.
"The virus has been re-engineered so that it can't
cause disease anymore but it still retains the ability
to reprogram the immune system so that it will now
attack cancer cells." Within a day or two of the treat-
ment, Emily’s condition dramatically decreased. A
miracle happened and the next day Emily was bet-
ter. She was strong and aware. A few days later, her
cancer had disappeared completely. The inactive
HIV T- cells attacked the cancer cells in her body
much faster than anything else ever had and there
were no longer any signs of cancer in Emily's body.
To this day, Emily is living cancer free. The clinical trials
are still running and scientists and doctors are hoping
that the Inactive HIV will be the cure that everyone has
been searching for. If you would like to learn more about
Emily’s story you can visit her blog at emilywhite-

On Sunday November 1st, All American
Meats Inc. recalled over 167,427 pounds of
ground beef due to a possible E. Coli contam-
ination. There was a test conducted on the
meat on October 30th that showed positive
results for E. Coli. This illness is a result of
consumption of infected foods. E. Coli is a
dangerous bacteria that causes sickness, and
even fatalities in some cases. There have
been no reported illnesses linked to the con-
sumption of the ground beef. However,
health officials urge consumers to throw
away or return any meat that was affected.

Hey There Delilah,
I am struggling with some things I am not proud of. Every morning I wake up, I look in the mirror, I grab
a tube of toothpaste and I squeeze a whole mouthful of toothpaste into my mouth. I know it's bad for me,
and I know it's not good, but I can't seem to stop. Not only is it making me sick, but my toothpaste bill
has shot sky high! What should I do?
-Sincerely, Colgate crest
Dear Colgate Crest,
You must have the freshest breath and whitest teeth of all of Hurricane High School! You should be
proud of that! But, all you need is just a dime sized amount of toothpaste to do the job. Maybe try getting
toothpaste that doesn't taste good at all so you won't want to eat it, but you'll still be able to clean your
pearly white teeth! Keep up the good hygiene and floss twice a day.
-Sincerely, Delilah
Hey There Delilah,
I recently made out with a cheerleader from Hurricane High School. I feel like I am starting to catch feel-
ings for her, but I made out with her best friend, who is also a cheerleader, a week before her, and neither
of them know that I kissed them both. I don't want them to find out because I have feelings for both of
them, and I just don't know which one to choose from. They both are super cute and I can see myself with
both of them. Should I just keep both of them and go back and forth without them knowing? Or should I
tell them and see which one is more into me? Please help me.
-Sincerely, Double Duty
Dear Double Duty,
First of all Congratulations! Second of all, l I would highly recommend that you ask the girls separately
how they feel towards you; figure out which one likes you the most or which one even likes you at all!
Figure out which one makes you smile and laugh the most, and the one you can be yourself with, You
don't want to be someone completely different just for the person you think you like! You should feel com-
fortable and happy with the girl you are with; you should get butterflies every time you see her even if
you just barely saw her 5 minutes before! It is never a smart idea to drag two girls along especially be-
cause that is not right. Girls are amazing and beautiful and they should always be treated with respect
even if they are rude and you think they don't deserve it.
-Sincerely, Delilah
