There was almighty craic at St. Columbas Hall last Sunday for their annual summer Bar-B-Q. Music by Drive, bouncy slide for the kids, DJ and some damn good food – well done to the committee and to Julian, John and George who did all the cooking.
The election campaigns, plans and strategies have run their courses and there have been winners, losers and some very close calls. Congratulations to all those who have been elected to represent their communities on both City and County Councils. To those who lost their seats and those who were attempting for the first time to become councillors but were unsuccessful, we wish you the best of luck. Likewise, in the European election well done to everyone on a hard fought battle.
The East Village Bar and Restaurant have just introduced a new food menu while in the bar you can chose from a new range of exotic cocktails. I love live music and it’s great to see live music at the East Village every Friday night. Watch this space for an impending announcement on Friday nights ‘Live at the Village’ – good times are a comin!!!
Speaking of music venues, I have mentioned Ziggy’s on South Main Street in the past for its craic and music plus its Rory Gallagher Wall. Last Saturday evening there was an auction of Rory Gallagher goodies for charity – tee shirts, badges, vinyl albums – with everything going, raising €2,000 in all.
Well done to James Browne owner of Ziggy’s and to my own brother Trevor who was MC on the night and a special thank you and well done to all who contributed and walked away with some great mementos.
Let’s hope the sun is taking a short break and is coming back sometime soon.

There continues to be a great response to the new Kip McGrath Education Centre opened last September by James Sexton. The Centre in Bishopstown provides tuition for primary and secondary students between the ages of 6 and 14 and specialises in English, Reading, Spelling, Mathematics and Irish. Lessons continue during June and July with new enrolments now being
taken for September.
There are currently over 600 Kip McGrath Education Centres worldwide. The systems and methods used have been adapted to meet the needs of the Irish curriculum with other Centres successfully operating in Dublin, Galway, Kerry and Waterford.
The Centre at Unit 2, Ardrostig, Bishopstown is owned and operated by James Sexton, a fully qualified teacher with 16 years of classroom experience. James was educated at Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown and holds a B.A. degree and Higher Diploma in Education from University College Cork. The modern and spacious Centre is conveniently located opposite the entrance to Dunnes Stores, Bishopstown Court.
The Centre is equipped with modern computer facilities and provides a unique learning environment where students are taught in small groups of no more than five. A wide variety of students attend the Centre. It caters for children who are having difficulty with their schoolwork or have fallen behind as well as
children who would like to be challenged further.
Students are offered a free assessment and individual programmes of study are devised focusing on the specific needs of each student. They are guided through their work by experienced and fully qualified teachers.
Classes run from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings.

Douglas Community notice BoardCommunity Park Playground
It was great to see so many children enjoying the playground during the spell of good weather we all enjoyed recently. The equipment is fantastic and there is great variety, suiting younger and older children. Parents are very enthusiastic about the new facility. The one thing that they have brought to our attention is the absence of a toilet. During the week, the children are welcome to use the facilities within the community centre, but when this is closed, as it is at week-ends, this is not possible.
Building a separate toilet block to facilitate users of the playground and the general public using the park would be the obvious answer. The matter has been discussed at our monthly meeting and there are serious aspects in relation to the safety/security of the public, particularly of children. We are sure this matter has been resolved in other areas around the country where there are public parks and we will try to discover ‘best practice’ before considering such a project. Other playgrounds within the Cork Co. Council area are also trying to grapple with this problem.
Meanwhile, if any member of the public has any ideas/opinions or experience on how to resolve this, please drop in a note to the Community Centre.
Frankfield ScoutsOver the June weekend, 31 members of the 74th Frankfield-Grange Macaoimh travelled to Dalgan Park, Co. Meath to participate in a festival that is held every three years for young scouts from throughout Ireland. With over 3,000 scouts camping for the 4 day event in the glorious sunshine, Jamoige ’09, was a fantastic success. Events included sports competitions, science experiments, team games, assault courses, talent competition, model-making, etc. with the emphasis on enjoyment and participation. A special mention to Douglas Credit Union who generously sponsored specially designed poloshirts worn by the 74th Macaoimh at the event.
Douglas Community CentreOur monthly meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. If you have any issue/problem you wish to raise, please drop in a note to the centre on Church Road in advance of the monthly meeting. Please note there will be no meetings during the months of July or August.
Douglas Tidy TownsTidy Towns volunteers meet at the centre every Saturday morning at 10.30 to do a litter clean-up of the area. With the council cut-backs on grass-cutting and maintenance of planted areas, more volunteers are needed to help with this work so that the standards of past years can be maintained. Please come along on Saturday morning if you have an hour or two to spare.

THirD LeveL SiLenCeGovt’s silence on their plan to reintroduce third level fees was deafening in run up to election.
Fianna Fáil and Green Ministers, T.D.s and election candidates were careful to avoid the issue of how and when they intend to reintroduce third level fees during the local & European election campaigns. Their silence on the subject of their plan to reintroduce third level fees was deafening.
In the absence of any details from the Government we still don’t know how the system will work, when it will be introduced and who will have to pay the fees. Parents are left in a difficult position where they don’t know if they face the prospect of having to pay the cost of third level education for their teenage children in increasingly difficult economic times or not.
Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe was clearly silenced until after the local and European elections unless he scares off what little public support the Fianna Fáil/Green Government have left. It is unlikely that now that these votes have been cast that this silence will continue for long.
The introduction of third level fees in the way that Minister O’Keeffe was talking about before the Government went silent on the issue is short sighted as it ignores the educational and ecomonic benefits of the last Rainbow Government’s decision to abolish third level fees and the need to reform higher education in Ireland.
Even if this Government survives beyond the summer it may not survive Minister O’Keeffe’s attempts to reintroduce a system of third level fees.

Our poem this week comes from one of our many website readers, Tiffany De Vos of Brooklyn, NY. Tiffany told it’s rare to find space and care devoted to poetry in a print magazine and she thanked us for it. She enjoyed reading Christine Potter’s poem in a recent issue. Tiffany has Irish heritage from her mother’s side of the family, and she recently experienced her first trip to Dublin, Cork, Blarney, Waterford, and a few other choice locations. She has had poems published in many literary magazines such as “Washington Square”, “Yuan Yang” - A Journal of Hong Kong and International Writing. “Pebble Lake Review”, “Global City Review”, “Dark Sky Magazine”, “Alimentum”, “The Saint Ann’s Review”, “Ars Medica”, “The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette”, and “HOBART”. She received my MFA in 2004 from New York University and a Hopwood Award in 1999 from the University of Michigan, and has taught at the University of Michigan and New York University. She currently works as a high-school teacher in the New York City public school system and serves as an assistant editor at the literary journal “Many Mountains Moving”.Thank you for your motovating three dimentional poem Tiffany, you certainly invigourated a few dormant brain cells in this rusty head.Your poem paints a picture that is bigger than the words you use, it is a reminder to us all what the essence of good poetry is all about. Crosshaven Development Committee
Following on from the success of the 2009 calendar and the positive feedback form the people that purchased the calendar, the committee have once again decided to produce a calendar for 2010. It is with this in mind that the committee invite people to submit any photographs with a local theme (new or old) for consideration in the new calendar. The calendar is a major source of income for the Development Committee and the monies raised in the past have been used in projects in and around the village inc. the new amenity park at entrance to the village, the new seating area at the pier and the Point, the viewing area at Weavers Point and the reinstatement of the steps at Graball Bay.
The calendar is also a great source of enjoyment for expats all over the world form Australia to USA who now wait for their copy of the calendar from their friends & family back at home in Christmas. The committee would like people to start submitting their photographs as soon as possible and as many photographs as they would like to submit by email to [email protected] or photographs can also be sent or handed in to Crosshaven Post office for the attention of the Development Committee.
We would like to have a cut off point for submissions by the 9th September 2009. The committee would also like to thank all those who submitted photographs for 2009 calendar and all those who supported us by purchasing the calendar.

TIDY TOWNSThere was a great turn out of volunteers to clean Carrrigaline’s Town Centre on Wednesday last 3rd June. Some 30 people turned up including Councillor John Collins and his canvass team who took time out to support the cause. Willing hands gathered bags full of litter on the Main Street. Others had the lawn mowers in action and helped to freshen up the town. During the week volunteers carried out more grass cutting and the gardening section carried out and some summer planting. More volunteers are always welcome to join the happy civic-minded people in Tidy Towns. JUNE CÉILÍ MÓR Going to the match this Saturday evening why not come to the Céili after the match. The monthly Céilí Mór in Carrigaline is renowned throughout Ireland and in many parts of the world. Now in it’s 13th year the Céilí Mór is organ-ized by the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group who bring the best Céilí Bands to the Carrigaline GAA Hall that is recognized as Ireland’s premier dance venue. This Saturday the Davey Céilí Band from Navan, County Meath brings tit’s own style of exciting traditional dance music to Carrigaline. Young Nigel Davies, their box player, starred with Riverdance for a number of years. Damhsa is from 9.30 pm to 1.30 am with a break for tea at 11.30 pm. Táille isteach €10 including tea. ACTIVE RETIREDThe Carrigaline Active Retired Association is taking advantage of the fine weather with some outdoor events during the month of June. Last Thursday they met as usual in the Parish Centre and then went on a walk through the Park along by the river, through Wesley Estate and back the Church Road to the Parish Centre. This Thursday, 11th CARA meet at 2.30pm and for a trip to Thompsons Farm shop and complex. Next week Thursday 18th they are off to East Cork and Youghal for the day. Thursday 25th will be the last day before Summer break and a special surprise is being planned, every effort will be made to get all CARA members to attend. TALENTED YOUNG CORk MUSICMAkERS
Cork has six young up and coming talented composers in its midst. The pupils of MusicMakers level two guitar class composed the music and lyrics for ‘Car-rigaline, the Summer’s Fine’ in their composition workshop during the year. The song was performed in the MusicMakers end of year Summer concert in
St. Mary’s School Hall, Carrigaline on Staurday 6th June and received a huge round of applause from an enthusiastic audience.
SUCCESS IN CARRIGALINE The new library in Carrigaline, situated near Dunne’s Stores, has been a great success since it opened at the end of April. Over 1,000 people have either joined or renewed their membership and half of these have been children. In the month of May alone, 11,000 items have been issued and again at least half of these have been issued to children. The building itself is over 4,000 square feet in size and is full of light. This atmosphere lends itself to browsing and reading the extensive stock of new books .Newspapers and magazines are also available. For both children and adults we have books on tape and CD. A good collection of DVD’s will be available soon. Over 11,000 people have visited since it opened.Activities of all kinds will take place during the summer with a puppet show, workshops and storytime for the children. A French club will begin shortly for children going to France on holidays or who have an interest in french.. kNOCk PILGRIMAGEFr Billy O’Sullivan SMA will accompany the annual Carrigaline Pilgrimage to Knock again this year. Fr Billy is a wonderful Spiritual Director on this pilgrim-age; he gets everybody involved and makes the prayers so meaningful. On the Sunday at noon he gathers the crowds for outdoor Stations of the Cross where he relates the Stations of the Cross to the lives of those present and what Jesus does for us. The celebrant and the homilist will be Bishop Eamonn Walsh, Aux-iliary Bishop of Dublin and Vice Chairperson of the Irish Bishop’s Drugs Initia-tive as that Sunday is the Matt Talbot and Pioneer Association pilgrimage. The Carrigaline bus will leave the Bandhall on Saturday morning at 9.30 am on July 18 and return on Sunday night 19th. my neck pain is Driving me mad!!
Have you ever seen someone holding the top of their shoulder and moving their neck around in circles while that grimacing look of pain comes across their face? Maybe that’s describing you! Neck pain is a common problem and many people suffer needlessly from this annoying and painful condition. Over time, the pain usually gets progressively worse and becomes more easily triggered and can begin to cause headaches or that feeling that your head is just too heavy for your neck to support!
The first line of defense is usually a trip to the medicine cabinet or to the medical doctor where relief is hopefully found in the form of a tablet. After “popping a pill”, the pain is usually unaffected or only temporarily relieved, only to resurface again. Unfortunately, this never ending path worsens the underlying problem and is a temporary solution that numbs symptoms, but allows more damage to be done.
You probably aren’t aware of the fact that there are 8 pairs of spinal nerves in the neck that originate from the spinal cord and exit between the vertebrae. These nerves supply the muscles of the neck, shoulder and arms, and other organs in the neck and chest. Irritation to these nerves can cause the type of pain described above, along with a whole host of other symptoms including sinus problems, migraines/headaches, tingling, pins & needles, dizziness, facial pain, ringing in the ears.....and the list goes on!
Tiny displacements in the vertebrae in the spine can irritate nerves and spinal joints, causing an array of pain, discomfort and often unnecessary “clicking” and “grinding”. Healthcare professionals are well aware of the damaging effects spinal misalignments have on the nervous system and on overall health.
The good news is that millions of people around the world have received great relief by having their spines checked by a qualified chiropractor for misalignments and having these misalignments corrected. This approach offers a more permanent, natural solution than chemicals designed to deaden nerves and mask symptoms.

ArthritisArthritis is the inflammation of one or more of your joints - such as one or both knees or wrists, or a part of your spinal column. Joint pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of arthritis. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In Osteoarthritis, wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movement. In Rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks joints and inflames the synovium, causing swelling, redness and pain. Risk factors for arthritis include:
FAMiLy HiSTORy: Some types of arthritis run in families, so you may be more likely to develop arthritis if your parents or siblings have the disorder.
AGE: The risk of many types of arthritis — including
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout — increases with age.
SEx: Women are more likely than are men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while most of the people who have gout are men.
PREViOUS JOiNT iNJURy: People who have injured a joint, are more likely to eventually develop arthritis in that joint.
OBESiTy: Carrying excess pounds puts stress on joints, particularly your knees, hips and spine. Obese people have a higher risk of developing arthritis.
Arthritis treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and improving joint function. You may need to try several different treatments, or combinations of treatments, before you determine what works best for you.
Exercise is crucial for people with arthritis, as exercise has a number of benefits for Arthritis sufferers including, strengthening the muscles around your joints, reducing joint pain, helping you maintain bone
strength, giving you more strength and energy to get through the day, making it easier to get a good night’s sleep, helping you control your weight and making you feel better about yourself and generally improving your sense of well-being.
Though you might think exercise will aggravate your joint pain and stiffness, that’s not the case. Lack of exercise actually can make your joints even more painful and stiff. That’s because keeping your muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. Not exercising weakens those supporting muscles, making your bones more prone to breaking.

My mother died just over three years ago. Her death was sudden and unexpected and was just two days short of my parents wedding anniversary. My brother and I had a very difficult time dealing with our grief at the time, however, my father seems to be totally incapable of functioning properly ever since and even today when I called home I found him distressed and very upset. Have you any advice on coping with grief? -

Hi Rosa.
Grief is the normal process of reaction to the death of a loved one. We all cope with grief differently and deal with it in different ways, and therefore, the grieving process is very much a unique experience for every individual. However, there are some emotions that are common during the grieving process, including: sadness, guilt, anger and despair. The symptoms of normal
grief, if you can call it that, will begin to fade within six to twelve months. The mourner needs to go through his/her own process of grief in order to reach an acceptance of the loss.
However, grief may also be experienced for a prolonged or protracted period of time and become more complicated, with the bereaved actually experiencing even more pain and becoming more incapacitated by their loss. In other words, as time goes by, grief may actually get worse instead of ease and get better. Complicated grief is indicated when the bereaved is finding it impossible to accept the death, emotions are predominantly upsetting and severe, with persistent thoughts of the loved one over an unusually long length of time. In a case such as this the grief may have developed into a medical condition, for example, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or Depression. Treatment for complicated grief will depend upon the individual’s symptoms and if it has developed into depression, PTSD or any other condition. It is important during
the grieving period to maintain a healthy diet, get enough sleep, exercise regularly (obviously, under the circumstances easier said than done), and therefore, support at this time can be very important and hugely beneficial.
Avoidance of alcohol during the grieving period is advised as over indulgence can lead to even greater complications and difficulties. If grief is interfering with your ability to function properly on a daily basis and is having a prolonged negative impact on you life, then you should see your doctor or health care provider. Paradoxically, deceased loved ones would not want us to grieve at all and would rather we carry on and live happy functional lives.

As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.FLOWER GARDEN Deadhead basket and container plants, and start feeding regularly. Feed Michaelmas daisies and thin the stems if necessary. Cut sweet peas frequently, and do not let any blooms run to seed. Transplant biennials sown under glass, 8cm (3in) apart in a nursery bed. Inspect hellebores for aphids, which can affect next year’s growth if left.KiTCHEN GARDEN Thin apples and pears when surplus fruits have finished falling naturally. Stop cutting asparagus and feed plants with general fertiliser. Estimate when first early potatoes will be ready, and soak about 2 weeks beforehand to boost crops. Plan winter crops while there is still time to sow them. In hot weather sow lettuce direct in the afternoon, and cover with damp newspaper for 24 /
48 hours to keep seeds cool. Thin peaches and nectarines to about 15cm (6in) apart.LAWNS & HEDGES Trim lonicera and privet hedges regularly. Use a rotary mower to cut the wiry stalks of plantains and other large weeds.GREENHOUSE Sow busy lizzies for houseplants in the winter; cut back in March and take cuttings for bedding. Start harvesting cucumbers while still small, to encourage further cropping. Sow cacti and succulent seeds in gritty compost. Start leaving vents open at night regularly, or install automatic vent openers to cope with fluctuations. Most cacti can be stood outdoors now, in a bright sheltered position.WATER GARDEN Check ponds regularly in hot weather in case they need topping up.
Net green algae if it builds up, and add to the compost heap. Mulch the bog garden with straw or leafmould to conserve moisture, or spread pebbles and coarse grit as a mulch.iN GENERAL Pick produce and deadhead flowers to avoid a summer backlog of routine chores.

Last Week’s Teazer: Ali ben-Ibrahim was a salt dealer, every day he went to the market with two huge sacks of salt tied to his donkey. One hot day, as they passed along the banks of the Tigris River, the donkey broke free from Ali and plunged into the cool water. When the salt-seller finally got the beast to leave the river, it immediately noticed that much of the salt had dissolved was therefore considerably lighter. After that, no matter how hard Ali tried, he could not prevent the donkey from diving into the river and ruining its load of salt. But
when it came to lateral thinking Ali himself was no slouch. One day he loaded up the donkey and, as usual, the animal plunged into the river. Then it learned its lesson and never tried that trick again. What had Ali done?

This Week’s Teazer When the police arrived a man was lying under the car dead. Investigation revealed that although he was not the car’s owner he was the last person to drive it. The car had last been driven that morning but the man’s time of death was established at about 3PM. The car’s owner was discovered in France. Eventually the police and the coroner were satisfied that no crime had been committed. What is the explanation?

Minister for Environment at Lifetime Lab
Minister John Gormley TD was on hand to reward Cork City schools during a special ceremony at Lifetime Lab, Lee Road. Students of 85 primary, secondary and special schools received their “Green Flag” for successfully completing the scheme.
Lifetime Lab was delighted to host the event, ‘Lifetime Lab promotes sustainable living through onsite interactive exhibits, classroom workshops and onsite work practices, by operating onsite best practice Lifetime Lab has realised a reduction of almost 40% in energy. The Green Schools programme reinforces our message of promoting, understanding and building a better future”, says Mervyn Horgan, manager Lifetime Lab.
Lifetime Lab is located at the old Waterworks building on the Lee Road. The site now comprises of a Visitor Centre and Steam Engine Room, Playground, Conference Room, School Resource Centre and Cork City Energy Agency office.

The DOUGLAS BOOK OF solidarity supporting victims of institutional abuse is now closed, Lord mayor Cllr Brian Birmingham invited us to present the Douglas book at a ceremony in City Hall, where Lord Mayor presented the City Hall Book. Both books were presented to the group called “Right of place”. The books were handed back to be kept in the archives in the Seamus Murphy Building, Great William O’Brien Street .The archives of both city and county are stored there. It is certainly worth a visit .
The weather was lovely on our trip Mount Mellary, we had a stop in Lismore for a cuppa. I believe there are only 12 brothers now in the Abbey. It is unique to hear them chanting in the beautiful church, the shop was kept busy with our group buying rosary beads medals etc. Each item was blessed as we bought it, when you meet Minnie ask her about her confession (no not her sins), it could only happen to Minnie! Next Tuesday we are off to Kenmare-Killarney and if you are interested give me a call on 4363867.
The Garda are advising the ladies to mind their handbags as there is a spate of gangs (usually women) who work in two’s with one to distract, whilst the other relives you of your possessions, so please do not take large amounts of money with you, and only take what you need!
On behalf of our Young at Heart Group, I would like to send our best wishes to Bartoz Mieszala on the occasion of his wedding to the lovely Dagmara, and as you know Bartoz is the manager of Douglas shopping centre and he is getting married in his native country of Poland. I did try to get an invite for the entire group to go to his wedding, but he has been avoiding me since (joke). All the best for the future.

Shanbally nationa School Golf Classic 2009 Launch
At a very nice get-together in Raffeen Creek Golf Club the Principal and Board members of Shanbally NS announced very generous Sponsorship of their forthcoming Golf Classic. The Main Sponsors this year are House of Coolmore Furniture and Poseidon Management Services Ltd. The Chairman of the Board of Management, Fr. John Newman PP, expressed sincere thanks to Mr Pat O’Sullivan and Mr. Jerome O’Mahony, Manag-ers of both Companies respectively.
Mr. Liam Shanahan pointed out that all money raised in this year’s Clas-sic is earmarked for the provision of Interactive Technology solutions in the three Special Education units in the School, namely the Special Class for Speech and Language, Resource and Learning Support. Interactive Whiteboards are currently in place in all eight Mainstream classes after a two-year Fundraising project, recently completed. Current funding has not been provided by the Dept. of Ed. and Sc. in the IT area for years, so schools are forced to take on this initiative if they want to lead their children into this latest cutting-edge technology in education.
The Golf Classic returns to its home in Raffeen Creek Golf Club next Friday 12th June. Teams of three play throughout the day, Burger break on the 9th and a meal provide afterwards. There are lovely prizes on offer. There are tee-times available in the morning and a few left in the afternoon.

The gig guide is unusually quiet this weekend but the dry spell wont last long with live at the Marquee and the Speigletent coming up. After their narrow first round victory over Naomh Abán, Douglas footballers have been drawn to face Dohenys in the Senior Football Champion-ship. Meanwhile, for the second consecutive year Douglas and Youghal will meet in the Premier In-termediate Hurling Championship. Last year the sides served up a cracking third round contest in Carrigtwohill which ended in a draw on a scoreline of 3-13 to 2-16. With Douglas winning the replay, the East Cork side now have an opportunity to ex-act revenge.
Michael Quirke Tournament:
Next Saturday afternoon Douglas G.A.A. Club host the under 11 hurling tournament held an-nually in memory of the late Michael Quirke. Douglas are the defending champions as last year a team captained by David Barry and coached by Jim O’Mahony, Pat Walsh, Kieran Kingston and Seán O’Mahony beat Fr. O’Neill’s in the final. The games are scheduled to begin at 2.00pm.

The Senior championship has been fixed for Wednesday 24th June in Ballinlough at 6:45pm against St. Finbarr’s. As you are aware we beat them in last year’s final so this is going to be the big game of the first round. A number of last year’s panel are not available so we will definitely see a few new faces making their debut in this game.The Cork Senior team won the Munster final re-cently against Tipperary. Amanda O’Regan started the game but went off injured with 5 minutes to go to half-time. Catriona Mackey came on in her place. Other Douglas players on the panel were Pamelia
Mackey and Jessica Kavanagh (called up late as the sub keeper was injured). Amanda accepted the cup on behalf of her team mates (See photo). To my knowledge this is the first time a Douglas player has captained a winning Cork Senior team. The Senior team are preparing for the championship which is being played as a round-robin with two sections of four teams. The top two teams in both sections play-off in the All Ireland semi-finals. Cork play Dublin on Saturday 20th June in Cork in the first round. A number of players played for Munster in the Geal-
Linn Interprovincial competition recently. Amanda O’Regan was on the Senior team who went on to win the senior competition against Connaught. Helen O’Mahony, Jessica Kavanagh, Pamela Mack-ey and Catriona Mackey were on the Junior team who were beaten by Leinster in the final.

Douglas ladies reach County FinalThe u13 Douglas team once again made history after they became the first team from the ladies football club to reach a county final, Douglas met with East Cork side St Colemans in the county u14d semi final in Glanmire and as in the previous match against Kanturk, nothing was known about the opposition and once again the girls came out ready for a battle and determined not to let St Colemans into this game at all. Chloe Nason was quickly on the score sheet drilling in a great goal in the second minute this was quickly followed by another from Amy o Connor , who scored a second goal before the break, Lydia Coveney also got on the score sheet with a great goal, Emma Cotter and Hannah mc Carthy were also on the score sheet in the first half. At the half time break Douglas were up 4-04
to 0-01, but it was quickly pointed out to the girls that they missed far too many chances and that st Colemans were a good side and they were sure to come out fighting in the second half. Its a great credit to all the players involved that they take on board everything that the mentors have to say and will always correct any mistakes made.The second half started as expected with a strong showing from Colemans but once again the Douglas girls stepped up their game and quickly took charge of the game. Lucy Hayes made sure that very little ball got into lauren Delae , Alicia Cremin did the same on the other side, while Ciara Mc Carthy played what was probably her best game in a Douglas shirt to ensure that goalkeeper Shiela Kearney rarely got near the ball.In the middle Lisa Smith gave what can only be described as a
match winning performance while Up front Amy Curtin and Chloe Nason were up to their old tricks and completely out foxed the Colemans defence. Half way through the second half Douglas put on all their subs and everyone of them proved themselves worthy of a place on this team. The final score on the day did not show St Colemans to be a bad team (and they were not) what it did show was the depts the Douglas girls were willing to go to in order to get into a County Final. Final score Douglas 6-11 St Colemans 0-03scorers ,Chloe Nason 1.0, Amy O Connor 2.0. Hannah Mc Carthy 2-02, Lydia Coveney 1-02, Emma Cotter 0-03, Amy Curtin 0-01, Lisa Smith 0-02, Niamh Coughlan 0-01.

Prior to the Cork vs. Kerry encounter Eugene McGee (journalist, T.V. pundit and former Offaly manager) stated that he felt Kerry were under more pressure going into the game. He claimed it is Tyrone’s all-Ireland to lose and he did not expect Kerry to be good enough. The point was made regarding the success of C.I.T in the Sigerson cup as well as the Cork under 21 success but McGee’s opinion was that whilst all this is positive it does not guarantee success at senior level.Sennan O’Connell spoke about the number of hand passes made by Cork before a shot at goal was attempted. The feeling among the pundits was that Cork should be more direct in their play. The more hand passes the greater is the chance of dispossession by the opposition. Obviously Kerry didn’t read the script; they were
sluggish and wasteful and their build-up was slow and laboured. Of course losing Tommy Walsh through injury didn’t help. In contrast to the Kingdom Cork moved the ball at pace for the opening twenty five minutes, playing the game at high intensity. The goal scored by Pierce O’Neill was all about pace, well worked and clinically executed. Cork got out of jail when Colm Cooper drove a penalty hopelessly wide. They returned to bad habits again for the final six or seven minutes through their labourious distribution of the ball. A sad statistic of the first half highlights 85 punch passes. Cork who were the better side had Spillane taken off; in fact he was left on the field for too long. James masters was also called ashore; one assumes that the selectors felt that he wasn’t physical enough. Cork did not really take advantage of the amount of possession they enjoyed and a one goal interval lead was a poor reward. The Rebels were again the better team in the second half, extending their lead to five points. Paddy Kelly could and should have wrapped up the
game with two great opportunities to score a goal and a point from play. Again from play Nicholas Murphy missed a great chance of a point. Kerry scored some good long distance points to worry the Cork footballers and supporters. A draw was the end result.Whilst possession is vital Cork need forwards who will take their chances. Yes, workrate is important; ultimately the scoreboard forms the result. Let’s not forget Kerry also had their share of wides. Selectors make decisions and changes but the players between the white lines are the people who do or do not perform. Michael Cussen’s introduction as substitute for Masters did not have the desired effect on this occasion. The post-match comment from C103 “We was Robbed” re-echoed throughout the following few days.

Lee roWinG CLUBWell done to Shane Ryan and Joe Kearney of Lee Rowing Club who were selected by the I.A.R.U. to row for Ireland in the Coupe De La Jeunesse. Joe and Shane will row as part of the coxed four and the men’s Junior 8 with oars men from Portora R.C. and St Joseph’s B.C.The Coupe De La Jeunesse, other wise known as the Junior European Rowing Championships, which was held in Cork in the National Rowing Centre last year, will this year be held in Vichy, France from the 31st of July to the 2nd of
August, but first there is the small matter of the Leaving Cert. to be done.On the home front Lee R.C. travelled to Castleconnell where they had two wins. The winners being the Women’s Junior 14 Coxed Quad rowed Jenny Creedon (stroke), Leonie Hamel (2), Roisin McDermott (3), Sally Haugh (bow) and Laura Healy(cox). The second was a win for the Men’s Junior 15 single sculler Brian Twomey-Thompson.

Frank shot a fantastic score of 13 under par in Corkbeg to top the Intermediate quali-fying with Chris in second on 9 under.
