School Development Plan

As advised, I will keep you updated on our SDP. This week, I have provided you with an example of the

Business Department’s Draft Plan. Please note the detail. Remember that the aim of any Plan is to

improve standards.

Please note that the Objectives match the Action Plans. Good SDP’s always seek to provide a clearly

defined action which matches an achievable objective.

I look forward to presenting others in the second half of the term.

Please also note the Student Feedback Form developed by teachers for students will be presented in

the next Gazette. This is an initiative all Departments and Sections will be developing. The feedback will

hopefully support and develop teaching methodology.

Best wishes

Departmental Plan – Business Department

The main objectives of the Business department are to implement the learning profile in our teaching

methods in the respective subjects: Accounts, Economics, Business Studies and Business & Management.

The ultimate goal of the department is that students, over the course of their studies, develop the skills

necessary to ensure success in the profession.

Objectives

1. Providing the knowledge necessary through the completion of the full syllabi as demanded by the IB,

MATSEC and IGCSE boards over the respective academic terms

2. Encouraging our students to become thinkers, open-minded individuals and inquirers through

effective motivational techniques

3. Impart the skills and techniques necessary to help our students communicate effectively what they

have learned

4. Instil in our students the principles that our subjects are not to be considered as being only a way of

ensuring profitability but should also take into consideration the society at large

5. Support our students, through reflection, to question facts and encourage diversity of opinions

6. Implant the concept of time management as a key to success

7. The Department continuously assesses and monitors its performance to ensure the mutual benefits

of both teachers and students

8. Enlighten year 8 students with the diversity that exists in our Department’s separate subjects.

Students should be made aware of what each subject entails (Accounts, Economics and Business

Studies). The aim being a more informed choice when it comes to selecting subjects which may

influence their potential career.

9. Highlighting where the subject chosen will take the students in life

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT – SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Page 6: The Edwardian Gazette

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Current Successes

The achievement of good grades in both external bodies such as MATSEC and IGCSE and

internally

The improvement noted in IB students when it comes to the implementation of the Learner

Profile. Students tend to fulfil most of the criteria through their behaviour and attitude in class.

The Department’s strategy to encourage students’ participation in class enabled teachers to

assess students abilities in a more effective way

The good relationship between teachers in our Department and students makes the learning

curve a better experience for all stakeholders

Effective communication between teachers within the Business Department. This enables us to

achieve our shared goals

Challenges

Motivating students in the classroom to improve on the implementation of the Learner Profile

Improving the pass rates with special emphasis on good grades in our Department at large

To instil in our students feelings of empathy towards their fellow students and society at large

To improve the interaction between subjects in our Department and ensure the continuity

from Senior School to IB. Continuity must also be ensured in the Senior School from year 9 to

year 11 where students need to keep in mind that the subject is a build up from one year to the

next.

The setting up of classrooms where students can fulfil their potential and where success is

celebrated.

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT – SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Action Plans

A detailed scheme of work, making sure that each relevant section of the syllabus is covered

in the timeframe planned. This is monitored on a regular basis through departmental

meetings which are being held three times in a term.

The inclusion of exercises and tasks encouraging the participation of students individually and

as a group through teamwork. This is done through: quizzes, class discussion, brainstorming

sessions when introducing a new topic and class projects which normally involves teamwork

that can be included in a school open day. Students are trained in the art of public speaking

through presentations held in class.

The introduction of interdepartmental learning practices where students are encouraged to

investigate and observe the cross relationship between topics. Example: Demography – how

is it applicable to Business, Economics, EVS, English and any other subject.

The organization of extra curricular events where students can apply their knowledge of the

departmental subject to the benefit of society at large. Example: Young Enterprise where

knowledge is used to make money but also to help the communities such as ‘Puttinu Cares’

As above

Help students structure a revision programme which seeks a balance between studies and

social extracurricular activities.

The introduction of a student feedback form in our Department where both teachers and

students can learn from each other

The introduction of relevant talks to year 8 students on the subject matter aimed at

facilitating their choice that can eventually determine their potential career. As a Department

we intend getting professional people to explain what the actual subject is all about and

where it can lead to. This should help avoiding misconception of certain subjects.

For students in our Department, we intend organizing outings which are educational and can

provide a better understanding profession attached to each subject. We will propose that

our students visit:

o Accounts students – PWC including a talk on accountancy and auditing and several

other options in other specialized areas

o Economics students – Central bank

o Business Studies – A local business highlighting the key functions in a business

o Business & Management – A local business highlighting both key functions in a

business and the common goal shared by all departments

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT – SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Page 8: The Edwardian Gazette

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Resource Management

The setting up of classrooms where students can fulfil their potential and where success is

celebrated.

The use of technological equipment to enhance practicality during a lesson

The effective use of existing resources

The introduction of a mini library. Students can avail themselves of these books whenever

necessary

As a Department, we put a special emphasis on giving out handouts and any other notes

aimed at facilitating the programme of studies

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT – SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Monitoring Success Indicators and Student achievement

TMPD – a useful tool to monitor each teacher’s performance

Student feedback forms – diversity of opinions on learning methods. These will be analysed

during departmental meetings and relevant suggestions will be included in a teacher’s plan

Assessment forms – the monitoring of homework results to assess students’ day to day

performance. This will be discussed in a departmental meeting to monitor common

patterns of behaviour

Results – the test, exam and external exams results should provide a good feedback of

students’ performance

General class behaviour and communication with other teachers not necessarily from our

Department to assess any common patterns of behaviour

Page 9: The Edwardian Gazette

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Performance measurement and way forward Objectives:

1. Weekly lesson plans and daily log books assessed. Homework given with

reference to the respective board levels.

2. Continuous improvements when it comes to students’ involvement during

lessons

3. As above

4. Engage students in activities and active discussions that would encourage

them to think of society at large

5. As above

6. Show students how to study and how to effectively implement a revision

programme

7. Feedback forms – prepared, to be handed out to students to complete

8. Talks later during the year

Way Forward: The Department will implement a new strategy to assess students’ performance based

on the regular monitoring of students’ assignments

Assessing the output of the feedback forms and implement strategies accordingly

Ensuring that the overall grades in our Department are continuously improving

Dear Community Members, Parents, Students & OEs This week, as promised, we have a section for women. ‘Women in SEC’, and also women in general, who are in charge, and those who, in one way or another have given or are still giving a contribution to society. October being the month devoted to Cancer, I thought it would be more than appropriate to dedicate some pages to create ‘Breast Cancer’ awareness. In this context some pages in the our Gazette are turning pink. There is section related to Health in this Issue, followed by more in next Issues. The solution, winner and prize of our 1st Crossword Puzzle are listed in this Issue and the new Crossword Puzzle will be ready for you to enjoy in our next Issue 6, making for a perfect Sunday break. Advertising on the Gazette is now possible and open to all. Please click on the link below to see the price list to advertise on the Gazette. Kindly contact me for more information. Advertising Price List As promised there is more information on our new ‘SEC Photo Club’ and also about the accompanying course for students and teachers. This is being introduced as a pilot project that will eventually lead into a fixed course, depending on the number of applicants. I hope this Issue is to everyone’s liking, it will be the last Issue of the month. Please note that there will be no Gazette next week.

I’m a Boa Constrictor

I’m a boa constrictor and I’m having a hard time to catch my prey.

It’s been a week since my last big meal! I’m starving! Starving!

I’m slithering and sliding towards the damp cave that’s full of bats.

I can see a huge bat, whoosh…yes, I caught it! That bite will slow it down and

now I’ll squeeze the life out of it with my super strong muscles!

Yummy, yummy, that tastes good! It’s much better than my last meal.

At least, now I can relax and bask in my glory for at least another week.

Harry G Yr 6

Dialogue: Hi. I forgot about the diary today. Boring day.

Ate some cockroaches and a dozen ants. Quite tasty. Bit crispy. G’night.

Date: Can you believe it? I STILL have no idea when!

Time: Midday.

Dialogue: Hi there. I’m swimming away back to Komodo. Too boring here. (Well, that’s not

what old grandpa says; he says it’s too exciting for him. Ah, old people) Well, can’t write while I’m swimming, so bye for now. I’ll start a new diary at Komodo.

Yr 6 - Creative Writing in the Drama Class Topic: If I were an Animal… A Komodo Dragon’s Diary If I were an animal I would be a Komodo Dragon. Dum, dum, dum, Dum! Dum, dum, dum, Dum!! (to the tune of Beethoven’s Intro to the 5th Symphony) These dragons are so cool! If I were one, I would poison anyone who crossed my path. This would be my diary: Date: I have no idea when. Time: Sunset. Hi there! I AM starving! Here on the Galapagos the most interesting thing thing that can happen is a coconut falling out of a tree. Wow, so interesting! Oh yeah, some other Komodo tried to eat me. That’s heroic! It was lick, lick, lick and he was whining like a baby. So much for being heroic. Oh wait a bit, some old Komodo is trying to fight and kill me. Hold on… Yeah, done. He was asking for a one way trip to Deathville. Population: unknown; you have to be dead to find out! That’s it for today. I’m a little sleepy. Date: I still have no idea when. Time: Midnight. The Great Dane I would like to be If I were an animal, I would love to be a Great Dane so I can give piggy back rides to little children. I would also dance with my master by standing on my hind legs. I would be the tallest dog in the world. All the other dogs will treat me as their king. I will be very proud. People might think I would not be a good dog for children because of my size, but I will be tame and playful and will not harm children. I would prefer to be black in colour and I’ll call myself ‘Grand Donais’. I will ask my master to take me for early morning walks to keep me in good health. Mark Saliba – 6x

New Website created by Ms Charlene Farrugia for IB Computer Science Students launched this week! The aim of this website is to have a central point of resource for our students’ needs; to be able to access resources and facilitate communication between the teachers and students and also among students themselves. In fact, a forum and a billboard have been included to create an inclusive environment as well as to instigate inquiries. Students’ contribution to this website is encouraged to make it as interesting as possible. The website is a wealth of resources, notes, links and videos gathered by IT Dept Teachers, made accessible only to our students, hence the reason it is password protected.

Re We have republished the article from Kindergarten ‘Edward the Bear ’as a vital part of the article was left out in the previous Issue. Our sincere apologies go to Ms Mangion.

Secondly, it will build their self-confidence, as they will have to speak about what they did with Edward

Bear during the weekend, as well as sharing a bit about their home life. Thirdly, each KG2 class will be

allocated a term during which the children will communicate Edward’s adventures by email to another

nursery school in the UK. We have already paired up with the Reception class at ‘Our Lady of Sion’ in

Worthing, England. This is a co-ed independent school which happens to own Edward Bear’s cousin,

Bernie Bear!

Therefore, each week, the children will swap news about Edward and Bernie, as well as share what the

children themselves have been doing at Kindergarten. This will also help the children and teachers in

both countries to learn more about different cultures and traditions. I am sure the children and their

families (as well as the teachers!) will have lots of fun with Edward Bear.

Julie Mangion

Head of Kindergarten

Edward Bear

This year the KG2 children are starting a new literacy initiative - Edward Bear. Edward Bear is a bear

belonging to each class, with his own suitcase and diary. Every week, he will have a learning focus (such

as tidying up) and the child who tries their hardest will take Edward home for the weekend. Each child

will get a turn!

The children include Edward in their family activities and Mummy or Daddy writes the diary so that each

child can tell the class what Edward Bear has done with the family. Whenever possible, photos of

Edward during his weekend adventures are added to the diary. The aims of this new and exciting

initiative are several; the main one is to increase the children’s understanding and interest in writing as a

means of communication.

Madre Teresa of Calcutta

Patron Saint of World Youth Day

‘She served people abandoned by society. Mother Teresa put love into action, while patiently

enduring a very long trial of faith. Pilgrims can ask her for eyes to see Jesus in each person,

to protect the dignity of each person from conception to natural death.’

Born: 26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997

Name: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu

Occupation: Catholic nun of Albanian ethnicity and Indian citizenship

Works: She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950.

Beatified: By Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

‘Mother Teresa is God's gift to humanity’ The death of Mother Teresa was a huge loss to humanity. She departed from this

world, in Calcutta, on 5th September 1997, when she was 87 years old. On 19 October

2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa. The beatification, which took place

in Rome, marked the first step of her sainthood.

The Nobel Peace Prize 1979

Mother Teresa, who was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, dedicated her life to the sick and

hungry. Her simple message was "the poor must know that we love them". Her followers regarded

her as a saint, but Mother Teresa believed she was only doing God's work.

Amidst the poverty and slums of Calcutta, Mother Teresa's efforts provided shelter to thousands of

the sick and dying, and ensured that thousands of children were cared for and given foster parents.

More than two million sick, including nearly fifty thousand lepers, were treated by mobile

dispensaries and special clinics. But for Mother Teresa, the Nobel Peace Prize was simply a gift to the

poor.

Note to Parents

It has often been said that the local examinations encourage students to regurgitate facts in

order to achieve good grades. From many accounts, there is an over reliance on memory

type questions as opposed to in-depth thinking skills.

This is precisely the reason the College chose to apply for and offer the IB Diploma at 6th

Form.

Please find below 2 questions, set by our Year 12 Philosophy teacher, which illustrate my

points:

1. The presentation of facts alone does not constitute an ethical argument. Discuss.

2. If morality were based on culture, there can be no universal values. Discuss.

To attempt these questions, students need to be taught how to use the higher cognitive

skills of synthesis, evaluation and discussion. It is heartening to witness the growth of our

students in these skills as they progress through our 6th Form. Moreover, our students can

and do apply these skills to other subject areas.

Conference ‘Qari Qabel L-Irqad’

organised by Il-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb

The main speakers at this full-day conference, held on Saturday 23 October, were:

Prof Carmel Borg,

Prof Grace Grima,

Prof Valerie Sollars,

Dr Chris Gruppetta

Mr Trevor Zahra

The conference, which was chaired by Dr Gorg Mallia, aimed to advocate healthy reading habits and

to launch a three-year programme of activities intended to promote bedtime reading. It was

attended by authors, educators, habitual readers and members of the community who are willing to

participate in this national reading campaign. St Edward’s College was represented by Mrs Antoinette

Pace Bonello & Mrs Doriette Rizzo Naudi.

The discussion focused mainly on the importance of exposing our children to suitable books, both in

English and in Maltese, from as early an age as possible; multiple studies prove that ‘sharing’ story

reading with our children does not only provide precious quality time but also generates unlimited

benefits, amongst which is the early development of valuable language and literacy skills.

This was followed by Workshops during which participants shared and assessed ideas aimedt instilling

a love for reading.

“Pharmacy of Your Choice (POYC) is best for patients

The fundamental aim behind this agreement is to facilitate a more comfortable access to the Government’s free pharmaceutical service.

The beneficiaries are those patients who fall under Government’s policy or legislation. In this way we are regulating the entitlement for free pharmaceutical services, by shifting this service from the Health Centres, and moving it to closer places of residence.

We provide patients the freedom of selecting a pharmacy of their choice to retrieve their medication.

The added value of POYC Scheme is intended to eliminate long waits and queuing time, customarily spent at the Health Centres. This new POYC Scheme will simultaneously gain its beneficiaries, a prompter and more personalized pharmaceutical service, in respect of the information, advice and delivery.”

INTERVIEW & PHOTOGRAPHS BY MS MARIA FENECH

I asked Ms Roseanne to explain, in a few words, what POYC represents, and how can we, as consumers benefit from this innovative scheme? This is her response…..

“POYC Scheme is a team effort; it is

being considered as a success story

…it is thanks to the dedication,

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Pink Ribbon

The National Cancer Institute has estimated that 192,370 women will be diagnosed with and 40,170 women will die of breast cancer in 2009. This statistic is not easy to ignore because it means that almost everyone knows someone affected by this terrible disease.

In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New

York City race for breast cancer survivors. This was the start of using pink and especially pink ribbons to

show your support for those diagnosed with breast cancer. Since that October almost two decades ago

we now see hundreds, if not thousands, of products that are emblazoned with pink ribbons, coloured

pink, or otherwise sold with a promise of a small portion of the total cost being donated to support breast

cancer awareness or research.
