Collect Almighty and merciful God, in your goodness keep us, we pray, from all things that may hurt us, that we, being ready both in mind and body, may accomplish with joyful hearts those things which belong to your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

1 Save me, O God, by your Name; * in your might, defend my cause.

4 Behold, God is my helper; * it is the Lord who sustains my life.

5 Render evil to those who spy on me; * in your faithfulness, destroy them.

6 I will offer you a freewill sacrifice * and praise your Name, O Lord, for it is good.

7 For you have rescued me from every trouble, * and my eye has seen the ruin of my foes.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Sequence God is Love, let heaven adore him (stanza 3) Hymnal 379 Sermon (all be seated) Nicene Creed (all stand and recite in unison)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

Page 4: The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost The Holy Eucharist THE … · The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost . The Holy Eucharist . THE LITURGY OF THE WORD . Prelude . Jesus, Priceless

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People (all kneel)

The Deacon says: Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, “Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.”

Please offer your prayers this morning, either out loud or silently.

The Deacon concludes with the following prayer: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Confession Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Absolution The Comfortable Words

The Celebrant may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying: Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2 Peace (all stand) Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with your spirit. Announcements (all be seated)

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Offertory Locus Iste Anton Bruckner Presentation Hymn (all stand) Old One Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Celebrant: All things come from you, O Lord. People: And of your own have we given you. Sursum Corda

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

Sanctus et Benedictus Hymnal S114

The Prayer of Consecration (all kneel)

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us

with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Fraction

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed once for all upon the cross.

People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Prayer of Humble Access (in unison)

We do not presume to come to this, your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Fraction Anthem Agnus Dei Hymnal S159

Communion

All baptized Christians who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive Holy Communion in this church. All who do not wish to receive are still welcome to come forward to the altar rail. You may cross your arms across your chest as an indication you do not wish to receive, and a prayer of blessing will be offered for you instead.

Gluten-free wafers are available. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer, simply ask the priest when he comes to you at the communion rail.

Additional prayer is offered by our Altarside Prayer Team on either side of the altar, if you are in need of specific prayer, they would be happy to pray with you after you have received communion.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ: and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. Prayer for our Search Team (in unison)

Good and gracious God, thank you for blessing our church in every way imaginable. Not long after the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, communities of believers began to grow out of the fertile soil of the ancient Mediterranean. One of these communities was the recipient of several pastoral letters from John, now known as 1, 2, and 3 John. We will explore these important letters, which flesh out what it means to live life with a God who is Love. Flowers at the Altar The flowers at the altar today are given to the glory of God and in memory of Graham Wilson (England), Richard Maracle (Canada) and Kenneth Begin (California) by Bob and Trudy Shaw. Hurricane Relief through ARDF Hurricane Florence has wreaked havoc in communities all along the coast in the Carolinas. Many people have been evacuated inland. Your gift to the Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF) will enable local churches on the ground to respond quickly. Rector Search Committee Update This week the rector search committee met to determine the specific questions and format for the listening sessions. Please sign up—at the table before, in between, and after the Sunday services or by calling the church office—for the remaining two sessions on Tuesday 9/25, and Saturday 9/29. We are excited to hear your thoughts on these important questions and hopeful that this will be a time of unification and eager anticipation for Christ Church Anglican. If you cannot make either of these sessions, do not fear; we will make sure that there are future means of sharing your thoughts. Each week when this committee gathers together, we are assured that God is and will continue revealing His glory throughout this process; please pray for this with us. Newcomers’ Gathering Today! We love those who are new to Christ Church Anglican! Seriously, you are God’s blessing to us. A newcomer is someone who has been with us for one week or two years, who has not already been to a newcomer gathering. Please plan to join us this afternoon from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in our Parish Hall. This is a great opportunity to meet other newcomers as well as some Vestry members. Fr. Chuck will briefly explain the history of CCA and the Anglican Church, and will discuss our life and ministry at Christ Church. Flower Guild The Flower Guild is in need of volunteers to arrange altar flowers or to take them down after the services. This is such a rewarding experience and allows our church to save money by creating arrangements ourselves instead of paying a florist. Training is provided. Please contact Marj Pelham [email protected] or 602.942.1863. Children’s Choir Opportunity Hannah Kimball, our CCA Choir Alto Section Leader, will be conducting a Children’s Choir (Pre-K through 4th Grade) at CCA this fall on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-6:45 p.m., October 10-November 14 in the Choir Room (Room 7.) This will be a great opportunity for the children to learn about vocal technique and our rich tradition of sacred music. If your children are interested in participating, please contact the church office at 602.955.2040 or [email protected] by Monday, October 1. Little voices worshipping God is such a blessing! Blessing of the Animals Join us with your pets on the church lawn for a special service on Wednesday, October 3, 6:00 p.m. Traditionally around the Feast of St. Francis, we have a brief service to bless our animals. For everyone’s safety, pets must either be on a leash or in a carrier. This would be a great opportunity to invite friends and neighbors for an event enjoyed by all! Single Combined Service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 7 Due to many of our parishioners, staff and clergy attending the Parish Retreat in Prescott the weekend of October 5-7, we will have a single combined service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 7. We will have Godly Play during the service, but no Adult Education or Sunday School that day. Please mark your calendars!

Parish Retreat - October 5 -7 This Sunday, September 23, is the last day to register for our Parish Retreat. Fr. Jerry and Stacy Kramer will be speaking and sharing with us about discipleship and the theme will be: "Singing off-key in the Jesus Choir." Jerry is an ACNA priest, but after his Louisiana church was destroyed in 2005 Katrina Hurricane he became dean of the Anglican Cathedral in Zanzibar, left there to help start three orphanages (Tanzania and Kenya) and is working now with refugee children and families in the Middle East through an organization called Love for the Least (lovefortheleast.org). Jerry is a wild man for God and they both speak boldly for Jesus about Christian discipleship. Sign up at the table outside the Narthex or by emailing Cheryl at [email protected]. Phoenix Refugee Connections Training and Networking Event Did you know Arizona has become home to about 83,000 refugees from all over the world since 1975, many of whom are our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters? Are you curious about how this all works and how you can best love your refugee neighbors right here in Phoenix? Please join believers from across the valley for Phoenix Refugee Connections' Refugee 101: Consider the global refugee crisis from a biblical perspective, learn the facts, explore local volunteer opportunities, and hear directly from a former refugee. If you're already walking with your refugee neighbors, join Refugee 201 to network with local experts and other volunteers. Saturday, October 20, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Redemption Church Alhambra. Register at http://bit.ly/PRC_Oct_2018. Questions? Contact Mary Kaech at [email protected], 520.975.8588. Next Baptism Opportunity – All Saints’ Sunday, November 4 All Saints’ Sunday is traditionally a time for baptism. If you or a loved one would like to be baptized, please contact Cheryl at [email protected]. Advent Party 2018 This year’s Advent Party will be the evening of Saturday, December 1st. The Advent Party is a wonderful chance to meet, mingle with and share a meal with fellow parishioners that we normally do not interact with on Sunday. For 2018, we are going back to our roots for the Advent Party and are looking for someone to open their home in hosting this 80 – 100 attendee event. We also need a committee to plan, organize and help the day-of. Please email Jeremy Borie at [email protected] if you are interested in hosting, helping out on the committee or serving as a co-chair. Our Parish Family offers prayers for: Glenda, Jenny and James, Sharon, Char, James, Jon and Allison, Steve and Joie, Ed, Benjamin, Richard and Kayle, Peg, Rod and Amy, Katie and Tim. Please keep in your prayers our seminarian Travis Wilson at Duke Divinity School.
