“Getting Started” December 10, 2017
c.r. van arsdall
Getting Started for Dummies should be added to the list of the available Dummy books. It is the hardest thing under the sun to "get started" with that New Year's list of things you vowed to do in 2006. Volkswagen Beetle Repair for the Complete Idiot helped me get started into fixing my Bug.
A search of the internet list books, consultants, and companies will guarantee a "getting started" approach to your dream job or to put you on the road to satisfying accomplishments.
My father once in the dead of winter could not get the car started. The oil was too stiff. He actually started a fire under the oil pan. I forgot if it worked but learned if you "lit a fire" under anything it was bound to produce immediate results.
Credit card companies seem to do well at getting plenty of people to use credit. Automobile companies are able to sell the latest loaded luxury cars. Those in the consulting business will say you need the right mood, the proper office furni-
ture, the correct working tempera-ture and the latest computer. If this does not work, there are classes available to ease you into the right mental atmosphere to get going. Familiar surroundings, music, a quiet room, the proper lightening are part of the list of aides to get you shoe horned into the fast lane to "getting started."
How did people of a hundred years ago accomplish anything. We have eclipsed the past few generations with all kinds of inventions to give us more time to "get started". In the past 5 years, the sale of sleep-ing pills has gone up 60%. I imagined more of our citizens can't sleep because they are staying awake wondering how they are going to "get started" with the rest of their lives.
Where we worshipped years ago, there was a need for more song leaders. We had men who had the desire to lead songs but could not "get started." I volunteered to teach a class on "getting started at song leading." We met for less than 30 minutes before Sunday night worship and practiced on
simple ways to get up and start the congregation into singing. It bore fruit with one man who was "lit on fire" to lead singing.
Consider these Scriptures:
"Call upon Me in the day of trouble" (Psalm 50:15).
"You shall seek and shall find Me" (Jeremiah 29:13).
"Near is the Lord unto all that call upon Him in truth" (Psalm 145:18).
Would you join this company?
We remain competitive by paying less. We are a fast paced company, we have no time to train you. We don't pay enough for you to dress well. On your first day, you'll be six months behind schedule. Some overtime is required each day and on the weekends. Anyone in the office can boss you around. We need someone with a wide range of experience to replace the three people who just left. Remember, you're walking into a company in perpetual chaos. Positions for old, and ugly have been filled. (from the LAUGH LINE)
