FIRST READING Amos 5:21-24

Thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take nodelight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings andgrain offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fattedanimals I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listento the melody of your harps. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness likean ever-flowing stream.

PSALM 139: 1-9 (all singing) Domine, probasti

1 Lord, you have searched me | out and | known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you dis|cern my | thoughts • from a|far.

2 You trace my journeys and my | resting-|places * and are ac|quainted • with | all my | ways.

3 Indeed, there is not a word | on my | lips, * but you, O Lord, | know it | alto|gether.

4 You press upon me be|hind • and be|fore * and | lay your | hand u|pon me.

5 Such knowledge is too | wonderful • for | me; * it is so | high • that I | cannot • at|tain to it.

6 Where can I go then | from your | Spirit? * where can I | flee | from your | presence?

7 If I climb up to heaven, | you are | there; * if I make the grave my bed, | you are | there | also.

8 If I take the | wings • of the | morning * and dwell in the | utter•most | parts • of the | sea,

9 Even there your | hand will | lead me * and your | right hand | hold me | fast.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:43-48

Congregation: Glory to you, Lord Christ

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate yourenemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, sothat you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the eviland on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you lovethose who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do thesame? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing thanothers? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenlyFather is perfect.”

Congregation: Praise to you, Lord Christ

*HYMN # 593 (vs. 1-3) “Lord, make us servants of your peace” Dickinson College

SERMON

All stand for the Creed, and remain standing or kneel for the prayers.

THE CREED (all in unison) Adapted from Tírechán's CreedAD 670 (Dublin), Ludwig Bieler)

Our God is the Creator of all humans, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Creator of sea and rivers, the Creator of the sun and moon, the Creator of all the heavenly bodies, the Creator of the lofty mountains, the Creator of the lowly valleys.God is above the heavens, and beneath the heavens.Heaven and earth and sea, and everything that is in them, such is the Creator’s abode. The Creator inspires all things and gives life to all things, standing above all things and beneath all things.God enlightens the light of the sun and strengthens the light of the night and the stars. Wells were created in the arid land and dry islands in the sea, and stars were placed in the service of the greater lights.

God has a Son who is co-eternal with the Creator; and similar in all respects to the Creator; and neither is the Son younger than the Creator, nor is the Creator older than the Son; and the Holy Spirit breathes in them. And the Creator and the Son and Holy Spirit are inseparable.

Page 12: The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthe€¦ · According to the story, in her last illness she started ... of The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew.-2-SEASON

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, andbetrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed yourrighteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, tofulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, toproclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS - * 255 LEVAS II

The Celebrant continues:And so, gracious God, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people bywater and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spiritto be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave itto his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this forthe remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: Thisis my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgivenessof sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Holy Ancestors; God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob; God andFather of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the worldabout us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, andnot for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this HolyCommunion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the worldin his name.Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Accept these prayers and praises, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, fromgeneration to generation.

SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS

In the name of God and of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in Christ's body and blood,We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER (said by all)

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where thereis injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there isdespair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we maynot so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be lovedas to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it isin dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
