Pastor Will’s Message

A Post Easter Message

A great preacher, Joseph Parker, used to say that there is one preacher who is always up-to-date- the preacher that shares to the members of the gathered family who have aching hearts. Those who overcome through the blood of the lamb loved not their own lives unto the death. They gladly surrendered their own lives in testimony to Christ. They gladly surrendered their lives in testimony to Christ. Call the long roll of those in ages loved not their own lives into death, and asked them where they got the power to live such long lives and die such victorious deaths, and the answer is always the same, “we overcame through the blood of the lamb. The cross was our motive, the cross inspired us, the cross strengenthed us, the cross constrained us.” I call them from their graves-the apoplectic martyrs, Peter, Paul, the martyrs of the Neronic Persecution; the martyrs of Domitian; the martyrs of the coliseum; the martyrs of the Reformation; the missionaries whose blood blends with the soil of China, India, Japan, Africa and the islands of the sea, and all who have lived Christ like, sacrificial lived amid darkness and sin, woe and hate. I bid them arise from their graves. Yes, I invoke the whole blood-sprinkled throng, those who have been redeemed out of every kindred and tribe and nation; and when I ask them to tell the secret of their life, and death, and victory, always it is the same; The Cross! ST. PAUL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COUNCIL MEETING

March 18, 2013

Present: Rick Davis, Don Beresford, Vicky Ritz, Linda Woods, Marge Fassnacht,

Guest: Joan Allen

The meeting opened at 7:25 P.M. The minutes of the February 18, 2013, were approved as printed.

Treasurer’s Report (Don Beresford) See Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss.

Minister’s Report (as per Pastor Will’s written report) Weddings Planned: 3 weddings, one in May and two in June of this year (May 18th and June 28th). Rehearsal

days have been included in these weddings. As soon as Wedding Coordinator is chosen by Council, planning for these and two other weddings (one in September and other is questionable as to whether wedding will be here or somewhere else) will go forward. I have put in phone calls but have had no reply.

Hymn List has been printed and supplied for Easter through the end of August for Anne Zimmer, Rick Tal-larigo, and Howard Page.

I have met with Evelyn Osterbrock about assisting in acquiring two sizes of baseballs for the Spring Intergen-erational Games in April.

Met with Nurture Team last month and this month and asked what their needs were that I could help with. They were supposed to get back with me with some ideas by this next meeting (5:30 this afternoon).

I sent format for Maundy Thursday and hymn list to Worship Team. I have asked Mike Bartholomew of Finance Team to let me know how I can help them. I have attended the Scout Banquet and delivered the Invocation. I have led the Lenten Studies during the series. 5 calls on nursing homes; 3 hospital calls; 4 pastoral calls; 3 wedding consultations.

Worship Team (Vicky Ritz) Worship Team will meet after service on Sunday. Wedding Coordinator job needs to be filled as we have upcoming weddings. Therefore, Council will vote (as

per Worship Team’s recommendation) via e-mail.

Care Team (Marge Fassnacht) $1,500 grant will be held until Care Team votes on the use of the money. Margie will spearhead.

Finance Team (as per Mike Bartholomew’s written report) Mike attached the Contribution Analysis Report through 3/18/13 to add to the discussion of the finance status

by Don. *Note that the Piggy Bank Fund 2013 only shows $54.50. That is because the fund was started in late February and the earlier deposits were placed in the General Fund without notation. *Note we have $11 in the Capital Mortgage fund. Not sure where this came from but would ask for a Motion to have the $11 transferred to the General Fund. *Note that the Initial Fund, used to offset costs of the offering envelopes, is at $219. This is about half of the bill for these envelopes. Not bad, actually.

Kroger Rebate is at $344.13. Keep using those cards. Gift Cards remain good at $3,805. Thank you to Sandy and her helpers. The Calvin College Grant expires in May, 2013. Teri is working with Joan and Will to make sure the dead-

lines are met and the monies get allocated and spent in an appropriate time and manner. Please discuss the UCC/Justice Witness Ministries Grant check for $1,500 for the purpose of assisting our

church with the healthy food additions for our community suppers. If approved, I will give the check to the counters on Sunday, March 25th, for Missions for the Community Dinners. (If I’m wrong, give me the proper fund to deposit it to.) I recommend again, that we accept this .Grant and complete the required “Story of Transformation”.

NEW FUNDRAISER Did you know we have an artist in our Church family? I didn’t either until a few months ago! I am talking about Teina Tallarigo, wife of Rick Tallarigo, our church organist. Teina has graciously do-nated four of her painting for a raffle fundraiser for St. Paul. How wonderful is that? The paintings are beautiful and beautifully framed. Look for them to be displayed in the Narthex be-ginning May 5th, May 12th, and the 19th. Tickets will also be sold on these Sundays and the drawing will be on May 19th. Please support the fundraiser and St. Paul general fund. Please take a minute to read Teina’s bio that is included. Thanks you so much.

Teina Tallarigo

Teina has worked in the medical field all her life, as a nurse, medical secretary, and as a medical transcriptionist. Later in her career, her interests led her to Graphic Design. In 2002 she graduated with an Associate in Applied Science, Graphic Design Degree at Mott Community College, Flint, Michigan. With her Graphic Design background, she designed a Teen Suicide Prevention Campaign, a Bully-ing/Kindness campaign, as well as a Reading Campaign for Mott Children’s Health Center in Flint, Michigan. In addition, she designed logos, billboards, mall kiosks, t-shirt designs, posters, flyers, brochures, book covers for authors, a cover for the theatrical production “Crying in the Night” as well as CD covers. She graduated with high honors, won the Graphic Design Art Achievement Award, with 3 gold and 1 silver award, as well as received honorable mention in the Adobe Digital Imaging Competition. It was through graphic design that led her to painting. Here, her love of nature, texture, color, trans-parencies and layering techniques has integrated into her paintings. Having traveled to Fiji with the Graphic Design students, for a cultural exchange workshop, the beauty of Fiji has inspired her work as well. One of her pieces was displayed in the Fiji Museum. She has had her painting at Top Sail Gallery in North Carolina, and currently has pieces in the Art On The Levee Gallery in Newport, KY. “Art is a path of creative growth, a journey into ones self, expressed on canvas”… Teina Tallarigo

To All St. Paul Property Owners, We believe that Spring may finally be here, even if the temperature outside does not reflect it just yet. The weeds are sprouting and growing the fastest of all plants. We are now looking for you to begin beautifying the areas around the church that you expressed an interest in helping to take care of. Thank you in advance! We appreciate all you do for the church.

The Baseball Connection

Cheers to everyone who worked on or participated, or both, in the Baseball Connection. Would we ever have found Gallilean Field without Pator Will leading the fans along the route? Hope everyone had an opportunity to look at the display of yesterday’s memories. We could munch peanuts and crunch peanuts and eat “hot dogs” while listening to “Super Ego” Casey at the bat. Could anyone ask for more! Happy Baseball Season !!!! The Ground Crew

To Coleman Waford and Troop 150, I want to thank you for coming to our Baseball Connection at Gallilean field. Your help in serv-ing and clean up was very much appreciated. Thank you! Judith Lewis-Combs

To My St. Paul Family, Thank all of you for the Beautiful Easter Card and also for the pretty Valentine you made for me. What talented friends I have. It made my day when they came. I think of you all each month as you have your meetings and wish I could be with you. Everything is going good for me. I stay busy and enjoy each beautiful day. I miss all of you and the church more so as time moves on. I send my love to all of you. God Bless you All. Again, Thanks for thinking of me, Betty Klug

SCOUT NEWS FROM PACK, TROOP, and CREW 150 Pack 150 is getting ready to wind down their school year. They will meet once each month over the summer. Those events have not been planned as of yet, but will sure to be fun. Camping is usually one the outings. Troop 150 attended the District Spring Camporee at the end of April. The theme was Aviation and the boys were able to complete the Aviation merit badge. The boys are also working on the merit badge Citizenship in the Community during their troop meetings. The boys are also planning on at-tending summer camp at Camp Friedlander end of June, so they are busy picking out the merit badge sessions that they would like to attend while at camp. Venture Crew 150 completed part of the Project COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) at the beginning of April. The youth did an outstanding job at becoming a team and working through the different challenges they encountered and solved as a team. They have begun to plan their Su-per Activity which will be occurring over the Memorial Day Weekend. Some of those plans include a canoe trip.

Nursery School News Where does the time go? Each year goes by faster and faster. It’s coming to the end and we are getting ready for the ending concerts and Graduation. So, if you are in the building and you hear a lot of singing you will know we are practicing for the big day.

I would like to say Thank you to the St. Paul congregation again for letting us teach in this beautiful facility. We are so blessed to have a wonderful job and to love what we do every day. Thanks to Pastor Will, Anne, Evelyn, and Alice Blum for all their support to the Nursery School and a big shout out to Jim Maybury for all the help he gives me and the staff everyday throughout the school year. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

God Bless and have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing all of you in the fall. Karen Rieman
