September 8, Rally Day, “kicks off” the Program Year of the church. The Choir will return to the Chancel after a summer break. (Thank you to those who provided Offertory music for our services of worship.) On this day there will be Baptism of three children, Bibles presented to children, and a special time of fun, fellowship and food. Plan to be present for worship and stay for fellowship in the dining room. There are traditional activities during this Program Year, as well as some new opportunities for service. The Women of St. Paul

The Women of St. Paul will meet on Tuesday, September 10, at NOON in the Chapel, for

“Salad and Stuff”.

Program plans for 2013-2014 will be announced. A variety of salads will be served. Plan to bring

your “dues” of $10.00 for 2013-14.

OINK-OINK

The total in the “piggy bank jar” in the Narthex is $130.85. If 50 people would drop a quarter in the jar each week, that would be $12.50 weekly or $650.00 annually. WOW!! What a great lighted sign that would buy in a year or so. So, please feed the pig each week!!

A Reminder….. “Soup’s On!”

The Community Dinner “chefs” discussed various ways we might be able to get funds to buy the meat for Community Dinners. They had a great idea that can be a fund-raiser and be helpful to members of the congregation who’d like a serving of homemade soup at a reasonable cost. The price would include the cost of the ingredients and the remainder would go into the Community Dinner Meat Fund. Not yet sure of the cost. They want to be fair with the price, but they need to calculate the cost of the ingredients. “Soup of the Month” begins with the month of September through December. Here’s a list of the kinds of soup and the chefs on the third Sunday of the month, carry-out, not eat at the church. (Really good cooks!) September Bean soup Judith Lewis-Combs with Margaret Maybury and Lois Manifold October Potato Soup Ruth & Chris Hoeweler with Diane and Bruce Banker November Chicken Noodle Soup Joan Allen with the Hoffner Chapter Eastern Star December Mom Fassnacht’s Turtle Soup with Paul & Lynn Kluesener

AND SIXTY DOLLARS

A new commercial Hot Water Heater had to be purchased for our church. As you note the heater cost $4860.00 however it would have cost more if it had not been for four great guys who stepped up to the plate and not only picked up the new heater but installed it also. A big THANK YOU goes out to Paul Kluesener, Bobby Combs, Skip Zimmer and Jim Maybury doing a great job. When you see one of these guys please thank them. A grateful member of St. Paul UCC

Ministerial Search Update

After the Executive Team assembled a list of potential candidates for the Search Team, the Church Council, at its August 19, meeting, voted to call seven members and two alternates to serve on the Search Team. It is important to remember that there had to be diversity in age, gender, and knowledge of the workings of St. Paul Church. There also needed to be an uneven number of people able to give the time and attention needed for this very important task. These members agreed to serve on the Search Team. Nola Apro Lois Bates Jim Gorsler Brittney Heitman Chris Hoeweler Howard Page Linda Woods Alternates are Judith Lewis-Combs and Margaret Maybury. They will be meeting with the Association Minister of SONKA as they begin the process of the Search and Call of a new minister for St. Paul United Church of Christ.

CHURCH PICNIC

A day to socialize with each other. Sunday, September 22, 2013 After coffee hour.

Come young and old to socialize and watch the St. Paul grounds “transform”.

Oh, by the way --- if you are able, please plan to help with this workday project in any way shape or form. Yes, it’s ok to be a watcher or “supervisor”. We need cheerleaders and story tellers and motivators.

We need people who can trim hedges, weeders, people who will use clippers and edgers, etc. The Boy Scouts will be spreading the mulch.

Bring a lounge chair and your cooler with your choice of beverage for the day.

Grillin’ with Rick begins at 3 p.m.

COMING IN SEPTEMBER

We are happy to announce that Sunday School classes will begin again on Sunday, September, 15. There will be classes for 6th grade and older, 1st grade through 5th grade, and Kindergarten and younger. The children will begin their morning in the sanctuary and participate in Children’s Moment. Sunday school teachers will then take them to their classrooms. The Sunday School teachers will be introduced to the congregation during the worship service on Rally Day, September 8.

RALLY DAY FOOTBALL

Don all your football shirts, sweaters, hats, etc. and come to St. Paul UCC, Sunday, September 8th. It’s RALLY DAY! It’s FOOTBALL SEASON!!! As we exit the sanctuary service we will all journey downstairs to Mountain High Stadium for an exciting second half. Admission is free as you exchange one (1) can of corn or one (1) can of green beans (you bring) for a football, the King’s team gift for you. The cans of food will supplement Tuesday night Community Suppers. See you at the game!

BOOK REVIEW ANGELS AT THE TABLE Author: Debbie Macomber

It has been awhile since we have browsed a book together. This particular novel was left on my “work table” with the note, This is for you to read! I did read. The result is our browsing together the Christmas Season in September. The story contains three triangles of charac-ters, namely humans Lucie and Aren, Josie and Jack and the angels Shirley, Goodness, Mercy and Will, the apprentice angel. The theme, so to speak, is the angels attempting to interfere by trying to put the humans’ lives lovingly together. How this is accomplished is out of this world. One can sit back and enjoy the author’s happy endings over a cup of coffee or tea. Oh, yes, should you see a camel walking down the street be not alarmed, there is an angel about. Do you hear a flutter of wings or a whispering of giggles. Watch for a copy on the Library Stand.

OFFICE HOURS: September 11-13 will be 9 AM - 1 PM September 25-27 will be 9 AM - 1 PM

The next Council meeting in Monday, September 16,

at 7:00 PM.

ST. PAUL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

July 14, 2013

Council President, Rick Davis, called the meeting to order at 10:50 A.M. and offered a prayer. It was determined that we had a quorum (57 people). Rick asked the Congregation to review the reports of the various Teams and Committees along with the minutes of the previous Congregational Meeting. A MOTION was made (Alice Blum/Ruth Meissner) to approve the minutes of the February 17, 2013, Congregational Meeting. MOTION PASSED and the minutes were approved as printed.

Finance Team Chairman, Mike Bartholomew, made a comparison of the Profit & Loss between this year and last. We are in the good by 5.4%, due to all the giving and revenue (fundraisers) and cutting of costs. Thanks to everyone for their efforts.

Rick proposed to the congregation that some Council members be allowed to stay on an additional year in order to get back to the stagger of 3 off and 6 stay in 2014 instead of 5 people coming off. He explained that the problem started sometime around 2005 when multiple people resigned from Council and other people were brought on. It needs to be altered for one year. He asked for a vote to extend for one year, the terms of 3 seats on Council, in order to re-establish the rotation per current Bylaws. A MOTION was made (Lynda Stagman/Diane Banker) to extend for one (1) year the term of 3 seats on Council in order to re-establish the proper rotation as per the current Bylaws. MOTION PASSED.

Rev. Duffy explained to the congregation about questionnaires that are being mailed out to them regarding the pastoral search. The point of the questionnaires is to develop a church profile so that we can start the search process.

At this point, Rev. Duffy conducted a Service of Installation and Affirmation in order to elect and/or affirm council members, as follows:

President: Rick Davis Vice President: Jan Apro Secretary: Nancy Ballman Finance Team: Mike Bartholomew Care Team: Marge Fassnacht Facilities Team: Bill Ferry Nurture Team: Linda Woods Welcome Team: Open Worship Team: Vicky Ritz

Ohio Conference Delegate: Evelyn Osterbrock Each of the members of Council introduced themselves to the congregation so that people can put a face with a name.

Margaret Maybury suggested that since we have a hard time filling seats on Council, at some time in the future, maybe we should combine Teams or Committees. Rick explained that the tasks are still being done by other people but the point is taken and will be considered.

A MOTION was made (Ruth Meissner/Lynda Stagman) to adjourn. MOTION PASSED and the meeting adjourned at 11:20 A.M. with The Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Ballman Council Secretary
