DAY ONEWarm-UpA. Have students pair up and share about a time when they felt especially close to someone they

love. Have a few volunteers share with the class.

B. Explain that there is a very special kind of closeness that can be described as united. Ask what it means to be united with someone. Offer a few examples:

ӹ A husband and wife are united in marriage.

ӹ A mother or father and their child. Even if all the members of a family don’t live together, they will always be parent/child.

ӹ Siblings are united through their parents.

C. What is the connection between the Eucharist and being united with God? When we receive this Sacrament, we are taking into ourselves the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. He is united with us, and we are united with Him. All Christians are united with each other: when we eat the Body of Christ, we become the Body of Christ: united with Him and with each other.

D. Write on the board the Scripture verse John 15:5 and ask students to connect it to what you just discussed: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.

ActivityHave students read United with God in the Eucharist (page 238) and answer the focus and reflection questions. Or read and discuss the activity together.

Formative AssessmentGo over the answers to the questions.

United with God in the Eucharist

Directions: Read the essay and then answer the questions.

When we receive this Sacrament, we are taking into ourselves the Body

and Blood of Jesus Christ. He is united with us, and we are united with Him. Because of this unity with Christ, all Christians are united with each other: we eat the Body of Christ, and become the Body of Christ, united with Him and with each other. Remember, too, that the Church includes the souls in Purgatory as well as the saints in Heaven. The Church offers the Eucharist as a sacrifi ce for the reparation of sins committed by the living and the dead.

Holy Communion strengthens and solidifi es our union with Christ. Jesus said: “Whoever eats my fl esh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me” (John 6:56-57). In other words,

the main effect of receiving the Eucharist is that it unites us to Christ. Our whole Christian life is rooted in this unity with Jesus.

Jesus is all good, and so to be united with Him, we must also be pure. Therefore, it makes sense that another primary effect of receiving the Eucharist is that it separates us from sin and purifi es us. The Eucharist forgives our past venial sins and helps to preserve us from future sin. Jesus tells us that His Blood “will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28). We should not, however, receive the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin. We should prepare our hearts and souls to receive the Eucharist worthily, and that means being free from any serious sin. In Confession, Jesus forgives our mortal sins and points our souls once again toward Heaven.

1. Explain the two principle effects of the Eucharist.

LESSON PLAN

DAY TWOWarm-UpHave students use their worksheets, notes from class, and copies of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (or the online version available at SophiaOnline.org/CatechismSCB) to complete Eucharist Graphic Organizer (page 239). The relevant paragraphs are 1322-1419. Or complete the graphic organizer together as a class.

Formative AssessmentLead the class in filling in your larger classroom version of the chart.

DAY THREEWarm-UpShow the Sophia SketchPad Eucharist video and have students complete Sophia SketchPad Reflection Questions (page 240). The video and a complete viewing guide are available at SophiaSketchPad.org.

Activity and AssessmentA. Distribute to each student five index cards.

Have them draft Jeopardy questions for the Eucharist on their own paper and write their final questions on the front of the cards and corresponding answers on the back. Note: Make sure students put their names or initials on the cards so you can grade their work. Give students all but five minutes of the remaining class time to work on their Jeopardy questions.

B. When five minutes remain, have students return to the Eucharist Pre-Assessment (page 225) from the last lesson and see if any of their answers have changed. Ask them to write down any lingering questions and share them with you for individual or classroom follow-up.

Answer Key1. We become

more united with Christ, and we are separated from sin: our venial sins are forgiven, and we are protected from future sin.

2. When we receive Communion, we allow Jesus to remain in us in a very special way. We remain in Him by participating in the Mass and then going forth and living out the effects of His grace in our daily lives.

3. Through the forgiveness of sin and greater unity with Christ, we become ever more like Him: forgiving, pure, and full of charity.

Answer Key1. God loves us

despite our rejection of His love. He enacted a plan to save us from our sin in the ultimate act of love, sending His only Son to die on the Cross for us.

2. Animal sacrifices on their own were not sufficient. They could never pay the ultimate offense man gave to God — an offense that deserves eternal banishment from God. God, in His mercy, desires union with man. In order to take away the consequences of sin and death, God came down from Heaven, became man, and offered Himself on the Cross. Jesus is the Lamb of God. His life, Death, and Resurrection are the only reason Heaven is open to us.

3. Holy Mass is a special worship service because it is an offering or a sacrifice. Jesus commanded the Apostles to celebrate Mass for all Christians so that we can receive His Body and Blood and participate in the salvation He won for us on the Cross.

Answer Key4. The Eucharist

unites us to Christ. Through it we receive a share in God’s own life, or grace. We are strengthened to resist sinful tendencies and to become what we are truly meant to be: perfect, just as God the Father is perfect. There are many ways we can live out these effects in our daily lives; accept reasoned answers.

5. Jesus was being 100 percent literal when He told his followers they had to eat His Body and drink His Blood in order to have eternal life. He is present to us in the Eucharist, under the appearance of bread and wine, which are not symbols of Jesus’ Body and Blood, but really are His Body and Blood.

6. Accept reasoned answers.
