Des mereDiThWelcome to Shortwood
We welcome Wimborne this evening and hope their trip was a good one. For me Wimborne will be the team to beat come the playoffs so this will be a tough game as will all the games now simply because for the amount of games in such a short space of time . Our last two performances have been very good and the players have earned their victories without question through effort and discipline, we will run out of gas at some point due to the size of squad we have, so managing the tiredness if we can, will be key to
make sure we get through this period with a good level of performance. The boys have responded brilliantly given what the club are going through and I couldn’t be more proud of this group in the way they have gone about their business and I’m sure that they will be giving everything they have to finish as strong as they can. Let’s hope we can give you all something to enjoy tonight Thanks

Wimborne ToWn F.c. “The magpies” hisTory
Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the Dorset County FA in 1887. In the 1930’s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset Junior Challenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times.Wimborne’s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, a feat not repeated until 1964. In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division One championship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the Western League and finished third in Division One in 1984/85.Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in the Club’s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times (1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and the Magpies also lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in 1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97.Wimborne Town also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, they reached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. The dream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, thus becoming the first ever Dorset club to play at Wembley. On a memorable day, under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 win over holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset
Senior Challenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph.2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wimborne have now become established in the league finishing mid table and gaining more points each season. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first round proper for the first time in the club’s history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of the Conference North ended the excitement.A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager in November. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Browne was appointed as Manager, During this time new Directors came on board, but “ due diligence” of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget being slashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a great effort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there was renewed optimism with a new Board in place. Matty Holmes took over as Manager, and assembled a strong but young squad which achieved our highest position in the league. This season all the squad have re signed, so ambitions are high.

THE HISTORY OFSHORTWOOD UNITED
Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank.
The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions.
League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further
six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed.
The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when
the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET).
Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final.
2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history!
The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a
magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position.
The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears.
The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions.
2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players
moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish.
2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20
seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club movedforward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18.

Shortwood won their second game in a week with a single goal victory over Larkhall. Once again Shortwood’s small squad shrugged off recent disappointments with another spirited display that saw them climb one place up the table. Shortwood face the hardest of run ins with 8 games still to play which will see them play 3 games a week and the games could not be harder with play off contenders Wimborne and Evesham coming to Meadowbank on Tuesday and Thursday. Des Meredith was pleased with the result. “Another excellent team performance today but we tired towards the end and with so many games in a short time this is always going to be a problem. But the points on the board will give the boys a lift.” Wood certainly started brightly and could easily have scored in the first minute Hawes and Freeman combined to set up Jordan Morris but he shot straight at Semmens in the Larkhall goal. Kibble then fired wide before a Carrick snap shot tested Pickering. Humphreys at full stretch just failed to get on the end of a Hawes cross and the combination of Hawes, Humphreys and Freeman really combined well. After 32 minutes Hawes went on a fine run but could not wrap his foot round the ball and his shot went wide and Taylor shot straight at
Semmons. Just before the break Humphreys had a goal mouth shot blocked and Hawes headed narrowly wide as Shortwood finished the first half on top.Larkhall started the second half brightly and Britton fired wide of the far post before Rich Thwaite just failed to touch home a Sam Taylor corner. After 66 minutes Will Hawes got away down the left and his low cross was swept home by Nick Humphreys. Larkhall responded and it took an excellent Pickering save to deny Lambert. Hawes then robbed a day dreaming defender and raced clear but as Semmens came out the ball bobbled and Hawes shot went over. Larkhall ramped up the pressure and substitute George King ought to have levelled but missed his close range header. Gould shot at Pickering and man of the match Rich Thwaite was magnificent in defence and inspired his colleagues. When Larkhall did get away their shooting was poor and Wood could easily have wrapped the game up in the last few minutes but Morris shot narrowly wide.

AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0Shortwood were stripped to the bare bones due to unavailability but still turned in an impressive performance to beat Wimborne at Meadowbank on Saturday. The spirit in the side was obvious and every single player can look back on this performance knowing they gave everything. John Evans commented after the game – “this was a real team performance and although we were a bit thin on the ground they did everything I could have asked! Jake Lee was outstanding today!”Indeed he was – not only did he score two goals but he seemed to be everywhere and his persistence was exceptional, which showed in the manner of his late goal. Tom King also made some excellent saves and to be fair the defensive display by the Wood back four and keeper was the major difference between the sides.Wimborne started the brighter and King had to save well from Gamble after only 20 seconds! Maybury then immediately swung over a dangerous cross which no one could touch home. Wood settled after that early scare and started to create problems of their own and Bennett and Lee both headed over. Shortwood took the lead after 20 minutes. James Singh crossed and Joe White showed excellent control and crossed past keeper Harvell for Jake Lee to head into an empty net. Shortwood had control and although Town had a couple of corners Shortwood looked the more dangerous and the second goal, after 31 minutes, was a gem. Shortwood worked the ball forward at speed and the one touch passing in the
area between White, Lee and Price finished with Price knocking the ball into the corner from close range. It took a fine save from King before the break to preserve the two goal lead. Lee almost added a freak third shortly after the break when a clearance rebounded off his shins and only just cleared the bar before both keepers exchanged good saves. The game flowed before Shortwood scored a third goal after 72 minutes. Jake Parrott delivered a curling free kick beyond the far post and Tim Haddock raced in unnoticed to bury a stunning header across Harvell and into the far corner. Bennett and Humphreys had shots blocked and Singh volleyed just over before Town pulled a goal back with 9 minutes to go when Preston rattled a fine shot off the underside of the bar.Still Wood were not finished and in the 86th minute Jake Lee scored with a goal that typified his performance. He won the ball on the edge of the area and refused to cede possession despite the close attention of three Wimborne players and finally managed to thread the ball home past the advancing Harvell. In injury time Matt Bennett shanked a good chance wide and King again denied Wimborne. The players from both sides richly deserved the applause of the fans at the end of this most entertaining game.Team: King, Rawlings, cant, Lewis, Haddock, bennett, Singh, Parrott, Lee, White (Humphreys 75), Price
