10:00 a.m. CHORAL EUCHARIST (BAS) The Gathering

All I care for is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection.   See Philippians 3.10

Johannes Brahms Hymn: 556 “O for a closer walk with God’ ................................ CAITHNESS Children’s Time  Greeting and Prayer .......................................................................... p. 185 Kyrie Eleison .................................................................................... p. 186 Collect of the Day:

Most merciful God, by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, you created humanity anew. May the power of his victorious cross transform those who turn in faith to him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 .............................................. Adjoa Winful

Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 126 chant: George Black .................................................... p. 885 Refrain: The Lord has done great things for us.

Second Reading: Philippians 3:4b-14 .................................. Kakra Winful

If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All: Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn: 345 “King of Glory, King of Peace” ............... GWALCHMAI

Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Gospeller: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the

5

poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

(John 12:1-8) Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily: The Rev. Isaiah 43:16-21

In today's passage from the portion of the book referred to as Second Isaiah, we hear the great exilic prophet speak of God's new deliverance to come for those trapped in exile and hopelessness. Despite being insignificant aliens and deportees in Babylon, God reassures the people that they have been chosen for a special work, and are precious and honoured (1-7). When the peoples of the earth are gathered together, Israel is called to be witness to God's mighty acts, to God's uniqueness and eternal power (8-14). But the past mighty acts of God in the Exodus are not enough, because God is ready to do something amazing and new, a reversal that is already underway if they only look about them (15-21). And although God's people continue to fail and fall into sin, God's desire and power to forgive and renew individuals, communities and the world will not fail (43:22-44:8).

LIVING THE QUESTIONS - 2016 LENTEN STUDY ~ Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m. What does it mean to be a Christian in the 21st century? Who was Jesus, anyway? What did St. Paul teach the church? How should a modern Christian read the Bible? If these questions, and others, intrigue you, you may want to join in the Lent (and pre-Lent) study group Living the Questions. Learn by viewing a short video each week, by answering questions about what you see and read, and learn from each other. Led by Fr. John Wilton. You don't have to attend all the sessions if you're not able to. Please sign up on the sheet on the table in the narthex. CHILDREN’S HOLY WEEK AND EASTER EVENT ~ Sat., March 19, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Children and their parents/grandparents/ guardians are invited to a morning of fun and activities as we prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter. Join us for palm cross making, crafts including the creation of a Holy Week banner, Easter egg decorating and the making of an Easter Garden to be placed in the church as part of the Easter decorations. There is no cost for the event. Please let Rev. Lisa know if you are planning to attend. SPIRITUAL SPA FOR MOMS ~ Saturday, April 16. A Retreat for Busy Mothers at The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine Rediscover – or discover for the first time – the true peace that passes all understanding. Mums of all ages and stages, working outside the house or in, can learn from centuries of Benedictine wisdom how to simplify their lives and make space for God. Join other harried mothers in learning how to create a frame of discipline for a deep spiritual peace that will lighten the burden of work, parenting, and relationships. More relaxing and rejuvenating than any quick-fix trip to the spa! Led by Sr. Dorothy Handrigan, SSJD and Molly Finlay, a postulant for ordination in the Diocese of Toronto. Molly has worked in her own communications company and with World Vision Canada. She is an Associate of SSJD, married and a mother of 2 young girls. • Begins 9:30 am with gathering for coffee; ends 4 pm. • Fee $25 ($15 for Associates and Oblates) if you bring a bag lunch. A hot meal is an additional $15. • Registration deadline: April 9, 2016.

12

• Registration at www.ssjd.ca PARISH MINISTRY ~ Sunday, May 15th, after both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services. Join us on Pentecost Sunday, for our first Parish Ministry Fair! This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the many ministries that go on here at St. Matthew’s, to learn more about them, hear from those directly engaged in each of the ministries and find out how you might become involved. Brunch will also be offered as part of the ministry fair and Pentecost celebrations. Further details to follow. PHOTO CONSENT FORM ~ Pictures could be used to promote the Church’s mission in a variety of media: illustrations, bulletins, exhibitions, videotapes, reprints, reproductions, publications, advertisements, and any promotional or educational materials in any medium now known or later developed, including the Internet. To keep compliant with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, passed in 2004, we ask that all parishioners fill-out, sign and return either the Photograph and Publicity Release Form or Photo Exception Form. Both forms are available at the back of the church, or from your Sidesperson or the Office. As required by law, this information will be kept confidential. PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS ~ Wilf McOstrich, parishioner, and a Communications Committee member has graciously offered to take pictures in preparation to populate our revised website. So from time to time, you may see Wilf snapping, random shots in and around the church, or asking you to pose. Also, don’t be surprised if some other parishioners take pictures or videos, too. As always, privacy is top-of-mind, so please be reassured that before using any of these shots, permission of those in the image(s) – still or moving - will be sought, if we do not already have your OK on file. So thank you, in advance for your support in helping us to maintain, and build, connection with people beyond our principal Sunday gathering. PRE-AUTHORIZED REMITTANCE (PAR) ~

Each Christian “should give, then, as they have decided, not with regret or out of a sense of duty; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

In today’s age of electronic giving, the PAR program helps congregations receive the offering through automatic debit. Our church has on-going commitments that need our regular support. Because the church is important to us, we are each called to make a financial

13

commitment to enable the ministry of our church to flourish. Preauthorized Remittance (PAR) makes it easier for us to fulfil our commitment. Using the PAR program for offerings allows congregational members and adherents to give intentionally, proportionally and faithfully to the church, even when they are not able to be there in person. This helps provide the church with a dependable flow of contributions, makes budgeting easier and reduces paper work. Your donation will be deducted directly from your bank account on the 17th of each month. PAR Remittance forms and envelopes can be found in the Narthex, or please ask a Sidesperson for assistance. If you are a new member to the Parish and your choice of giving is by envelope please inform the office at 416-494-7020 or email [email protected], giving your name, address and telephone number. Also state whether you want monthly or weekly envelopes. A PRAYER FOR MISSION ~ Every day, all of us at St. Matthew are invited to pray for/about the missional work in our community. Lord, we know You are a God of mission, and You call us to follow you into the world. Help us to listen to Your voice in each other, in our parishioners and in our wider community. Amen.
