Volunteer Spotlight

2 • Call Us at 216.360.9080

The Junior Volunteer program has many students 12-18 years old from dozens of schools, who spend their time forming connections with residents and making them smile through assisting with programs such as Bingo, jewelry making, picnics and friendly visits! While the program operates year round, this summer was a busy one as junior volunteers helped with commitment, a positive attitude and enthusiasm!

While spending time in the sun, the volunteers and residents enjoyed playing games such as Uno, Scrabble or testing their knowledge at trivia. They also had a good time tossing balloons and blowing bubbles.

Every Tuesday our junior volunteers assisted with the resident picnics. There was always so much to do from set up, recording lunch orders, wrapping silverware, putting on tablecloths and transporting as well as serving and making sure everyone got their correct meal.

A new activity this summer included hand massages which brought joy to many of our residents. In addition, junior volunteer Sarah Kelly visited residents with her service dog- Bella bringing smiles to many faces. All these activities provided the opportunity to get to know our lovely residents and form lasting relationships.

Montefiore residents and students from Kulanu, Friendship Circle of Cleveland’s Total Inclusion Jewish Education program are collaborating in a special monthly program called “Better Together”™ for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Legacy Heritage Better Together program is designed to encourage meaningful interaction between the young and the old.

The focus of this program is to sensitize students to the challenges of the elderly

Volunteer Spotlight on Junior Volunteers! Many also volunteered to work

some of our bigger events including the Employee Health Fair and the Employee Appreciation Picnic. They ran the welcome booths, helped pass out raffle tickets, tee shirts, and water bottles. They also served food and managed some of the other booths.

The Montefiore/Weils Junior Volunteer Recognition event was held on Sunday, August 11th in the Montefiore Chapel.

During this time, the 2019 Fannie and Milly Cadkin Junior Volunteer of the Year was awarded to sophomore Abby Kless who attends Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School and Vince Baioni, a junior at Brush High School received The Weils 2019 Junior Volunteer of the Year award. Both students are extremely special junior volunteers who demonstrated compassion, leadership and dedication through their years of continuous service.

and for the teens to discover how much they have to learn from their elders. The Better Together program, under the direction of Amy Pincus, Kulanu principal and social worker of Friendship Circle and Rabbi Akiva Feinstein, Montefiore’s director of spiritual care, includes opportunities to teach students Jewish traditions and ethics that they can actualize in their daily lives. Each student will be partnered with a resident and they will spend time getting to know each other throughout the year.

Entertaining Afternoon for All at Montefiore Has Talent! The “Montefiore Has Talent” event was

organized by Cadkin Junior Volunteer Summer Intern, Megan Schwartz and brought together residents and junior and adult volunteers to perform a variety of acts for a fun and engaging afternoon! The audience was entertained by pianists, a soloist and French horn player. Our sincere thanks to judges Ronna Leubitz, president, Resident Council, Seth Vilensky, Montefiore president & CEO and Margo Vinney, board member, who critiqued each performance while the audience voted. Everyone was so talented that each performer received a prize!

Many thanks to the Fannie and Milly Cadkin Fund for sponsoring this event!

Board & staff enjoy tropical Picnic!

I had the privilege of attending Montefiore’s Junior Volunteer Recognition program in early August. This summer, we had 75 junior volunteers (students aged 12-18) who contributed over

3000 hours at Montefiore and The Weils to support important activities such as friendly visiting, reading newspapers, transporting to activities, helping with picnic lunches, as well as office work and helping in the Posh Nosh Café.

The junior volunteer program has been in existence for more than 25 years and is sponsored by the Fannie and Milly Cadkin Fund of the Montefiore Foundation. It is a gem of a program that allows us to make connections between students and our residents that are life changing.

I came away from the recognition program enlightened and energized by the work our volunteers provide and the many contributions they make. The junior volunteers in particular are a very special group of people. Many spoke at the event about how their experiences helped them connect and feel more comfortable with seniors and how much they learned from

the stories and histories residents shared with them.

Montefiore is so lucky to have a vibrant group of volunteers. Our residents could not be more thrilled having young people to talk to, play checkers with, and share their experiences in life. It brightens their lives and gives them additional sense of purpose. We sometimes take this for granted as volunteers have been part of the fabric of our organization for so long. We should take a moment to reflect on how lucky we are for such dedicated volunteers working with our residents – day in and day out – this simply doesn’t happen at other nursing homes and senior housing facilities – and it is something that sets us apart from our competitors.

I want to thank all of our committed volunteers – students, longstanding and new adult volunteers, hospice volunteers, and our amazing board of directors who volunteer their time and talent to help lead the organization into the future.

We couldn’t do what we do at Montefiore and The Weils without your passion and dedication to the organization. If you are interested in joining our amazing volunteers corps, please contact Diane Weiner, volunteer manager at 216-910-2741 or [email protected].

I remember when I first started volunteering – I was shy and scared and I didn’t know what to do. I felt awkward talking to residents and the staff. I realized as the days

went on, there was nothing to worry about. The more I started talking to residents, I learned how much we need to value each other. I learned they just wanted someone

to talk to and spend time with. – Abby Kless

meSSage From rabbi akiVa FeinStien DIRECTOR OF SPIRITUAL CARE

While one should always be growth-minded throughout the year, it is during the Hebrew month of Elul, which begins 30 days before Rosh Hashanah that we are reminded to examine more closely how we have been doing so far in the

year. Every morning during the month of Elul the resonating sounds of the shofar echo in synagogues, reminding us to wake up from our spiritual slumber and meet the challenges of the days ahead.

In many of the shtetls of old, the air felt different in Elul. Everyone was trying much harder to be better, people were watching their speech, trying to increase their mitzvoth, and even a regular conversation felt different – more about substance and being careful to not say anything that may be wrong or harmful. The goal of the New Year and the deadline for Teshuva, repentance, felt much nearer.

Elul invites us to reconsider the possibilities and potential of our lives – how we might increase the meaning, commitment and purpose in our lives and veer away from the things that aren’t leading us to where we want to go. The idea is that we do not arrive to Rosh Hashanah with a sudden jolt to reboot and revisit our goals, but rather that we start to get our wheels rolling and all lubed up so that when the deadline approaches we are already wrapping things up rather than starting anew.

Here are some growth-minded challenges to experiment with during Elul:• Adopt a mitzvah this month that you’ve

been putting off but feel inspired about putting into practice

• Commit to learning Torah 10-15 minutes a day• Pursue one quiet act of kindness a day• Express and feel more gratitude for the

simple things• Tackle one challenge that you keep pushing off• Ask those you have hurt for forgiveness and

wholeheartedly forgive those who have hurt youWishing all of the residents and families of

Montefiore a joyous and sweet High Holy Day season!

Please join us in welcoming Rick Di Domenico as Montefiore’s new administrator. Rick brings a wealth of nursing home and senior healthcare experience with him. He comes to us from Aristocrat Berea, a

165 bed nursing home and 65 bed ICF/MR (Intermediate Care Facility for individuals with developmental disabilities) where he served as the executive director for the past five years.

Rick is a results-oriented business professional who has extensive experience in customer service, program development, strategic planning, team building, setting and administering budgets, facility operations, human resources and nursing home regulations. His pro-active and positive leadership style is a great addition to our Montefiore family. He has a strong ability to optimize productivity and achieve company goals while maximizing available resources.

Some of his prior experience includes working as executive director and/or nursing home administrator at Life Care Center of Medina, Beeghly Oaks in Youngstown, The Village at St. Edward in Fairlawn, Aristocrat Lakewood and The Commons of Providence in Sandusky. Rick’s achievements at these organizations include but are not limited to excellent annual survey results, improved resident and family satisfaction scores, implementation of new policies and procedures and increased census.

Rick earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Youngstown State University and an MBA from University of Akron. He holds a Ph.D.in health services administration from Southwest University. He has been a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) since 1993.

Rick resides in Valley City, Ohio with his wife, Wendy, who is a nurse.

Rick’s office is located on the third floor in administration. He may be reached at [email protected] or 216.910.2622. Welcome aboard, Rick!

SERVING COMFORT FOOD THROUGH YOUR SUppORT!As I write this message, I am struck by how quickly the summer has

flown by. My kids are back at school already, the air will begin to cool and the high holidays will be here. Although I know daily schedules get busier and calendars fill up with activities and commitments, the holidays are most importantly a time for reflection, family and comfort. Yes, comfort. More specifically, comfort food.

At Montefiore we do all we can to create a meaningful, warm and comforting high holiday season. As with all Jewish events, it starts with the food. We serve several holiday meals planned with all the traditional items, chicken soup, brisket, challah and of course, apples and honey. We know that our residents long for the sense of being cared for and nurtured with all their favorite comfort foods. We want nothing more than to create the feeling that the holidays are filled with the love and goodness that each of our residents grew up with and created in their own homes.

You, our generous donors, are serving “comfort food” each and every year as you continue to support The Montefiore Foundation. You are creating the atmosphere, stirring the soup and lighting the holiday candles that brighten the holidays for the folks who are here and celebrating with us. Each gift helps us bring warmth and joy into our home.

Wishing each of you and your families a year filled with love, happiness, good health and delicious family dinners!

Message from Debbie Rothschild Director of The Montefiore Foundation

Montefiore offersnew memorial program to

remember loved ones

Montefiore is offering a new program to family members of recently deceased Jewish residents, Montefiore’s Memorial Program. To help elevate the neshama (soul) of the departed, linking them to the living, Kaddish (“Mourner’s Prayer”) will be recited for your loved one daily for 11 months, after which it will be recited annually on the Yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) and during Yizkor. A yearly reminder of the upcoming Yahrzeit will be mailed accordingly.

The Kaddish is a deeply meaningful prayer that expresses and reflects the values of the Jewish people. Mourners are obligated to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish during the three daily prayer services. This continues for the first eleven months. Kaddish is then said on each Yahrzeit.

The Kaddish is in essence a prayer

of praise for G-d. The title “Kaddish” is translated as “holy” and its recitation brings holiness to G-d’s name and to all those who respond “Amen” while it is being recited.

Although many of us wish to say Kaddish for our loved ones, we may find it too difficult, time consuming or not possible to say it accordingly. But because the Jewish people are one people with one soul, when needed, one Jew may say Kaddish on behalf of another. A suggested donation to Montefiore would be appreciated, and we will make it our mission to help you fulfill this mitzvah, while still sanctifying your loved one’s soul.

For more information, please contact Rabbi Akiva Feinstein at 216.910.2794 or [email protected].

Donations to Montefiore are welcome.

because of You!Because of you…and your support, we are

overjoyed to announce that once again we topped our goal for the 2019 Annual Sustaining Campaign! We raised more than $500,000 to provide quality and loving care to our residents. With high expectations ahead for the 2020 Annual Campaign, we hope we can count on you again to help us and our fundraising efforts, including joining us at our 6th Annual Home Run held on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Ursuline College.

The essential services we provide each day, give families and friends peace of mind knowing a loved one is in caring, capable hands. Each year, the generosity of our donors enables us to continue our longstanding commitment to caring. The uncertainty ahead with Medicaid, along with the already sizable gap between reimbursements and the cost of continuing to provide the outstanding care makes your support even more valuable.

Please help us ensure each resident receives the best care, services and programming, regardless of ability to pay, and consider supporting our 2020 Annual Campaign.

For more information please contact Renee Greller at [email protected] or 216.910.2652 or Denise Pease at [email protected] or 216.910.2350 in the Foundation department. Visit montefiorecare.org/foundation to make your gift today! Thank you!
