The following slides are from the NASA Archives.

The Design Studies referred to in these slides come from seminal work performed under NASA Study Contracts In 1977.

These Studies are available in both Book and PDF format.

The first space settlements based on these designs will be smaller demonstrator versions.

They will grow with the growing space population and increasing demand, Small at first, then larger as more people are working in space.

The seeds for tomorrow were planted yesterday…….

Space Settlements A Design StudyThe O’Neill Model – ‘Islands in Space’

Each year for almost 20 years NASA Ames Research CenterHas sponsored a design contest for 6-12 gradersTo design a space settlement.

In 2012 there were 1,200 contestants from around the world.280 of those contestants attended the ISDC 2012 Conference. There settlement designs were displayed at the conference.

The seeds for tomorrow were planted yesterday…….

Different technologies can be combined to accelerate a spacecraft ;Ist stage - Magnetic Levitation (MagLev) System for horizontal acceleration to Mach 1.5 (600-1000 MPH)

(being evaluated at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center). 2nd stage - Hypersonic, air breathing Scram Jets to Mach 8 - 10 at 200,000 ft altitude. (5000-8000 MPH)

3rd stage - Rocket to Orbital Velocity 17,500 MPH.

NASA Studies Mag Lev and Hyper-Sonics TechnologyCombined for New Generation of Launch Capability

Magnetic Launch is not new nor unusual.

Studied extensively in the 70’s & 80’s

Demonstrated on large scale in 90’s

Navy is considering switching catapults on next generation Carriers from steam to electro-magnetic actuated systems.

Magnetic Launch for first stage Earth Launch is very attractive with higher launch volumes.

Magnetic launch on the Moon could achieve lunar orbit.
