THE GLOSTER GROUP
The Gloster Group is a joint venture between the Swiss family owned conglomerate Diethelm-
Keller and Norwegian entrepreneur, Paul Wallevik.
The group comprises sales and distribution companies in the USA, the UK and Singapore with
manufacturing in both Asia and the USA. Established in 1987, the main manufacturing unit
(Kingfurn International) is located in Surabaya, Indonesia and currently employs over 1,000
people.
The group’s products are sold worldwide under the Gloster brand.
Currently distributing to over 30 countries across the globe, Gloster is one of the largest international
manufacturers of high quality outdoor furniture.
Gloster has traditionally been associated with teak furniture, but is also one of the leading
innovators in the use of alternative materials such as sling, stainless steel, aluminium and woven
man-made wicker.
At Gloster, we believe that quality is everything and although you may be able to find cheaper
outdoor furniture, you will not find better.
Key to Gloster's philosophy, is the belief that outdoor furniture is as important a style statement as
indoor furniture, hence our range incorporates both classic and contemporary designs to cater for
all tastes and requirements.
G L O S T E R I N C O N T R A C T - KE Y BE N E F I T S
Gloster offers the widest product range within the global outdoor furniture industry, with items
available in a wide selection of materials - teak, stainless steel, aluminium, woven man-made
wicker and sling.
Thanks to our flexibility in manufacturing, custom products can be quickly developed and
manufactured to suit a specific function, style or project. In house manufacturing also ensures that
cushion quality matches the quality of the furniture.
Full control of the manufacturing process ensures unsurpassed quality and consistency.
A high product quality equals longer service life, which in turn reduces environmental impact.
All products leave the factories labelled with a batch number.
This ensures easy identification so any replacement parts later required will fit perfectly.
All teak timber used in Gloster products originates from certified plantations and plantations
owned by the Indonesian Government.
Gloster’s unique, optional stainless steel finish is virtually scratch proof, finger mark resistant and
increases corrosion resistance.
TEAK FURNITURE
Teak is a close grained hardwood with a high natural oil content. This makes it hard wearing,
highly resistant to rotting and almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost or snow.
These characteristics combine to make it the ideal timber for all outdoor applications.
Only premium grade plantation grown teak is used for the manufacture of Gloster furniture.
The features of premium grade teak are a straight grain structure, the absence of knots, splits
or cracks and an even overall colour.
Teak is an exceptionally stable timber once it has been properly seasoned. Kiln drying the timber is
very important as it enables us to craft accurate, close fitting joints and thus ensure the stability of
the finished furniture in a variety of environments - frost and snow in winter to rain and sun in
summer.
Many things make Gloster's teak furniture exceptional.
For example, the joints used are specifically chosen to provide the strongest means of joining the
component parts together. Thanks to the use of kiln dried timber and our modern wood-working
machinery, these joints are made to extremely tight tolerances, which means that they are always a
perfect fit and there are no visible gaps between two pieces of joined wood.
OUTDOOR LOUNGE
Weatherproof furniture is now a reality from Gloster - truly taking the indoors out, outdoor lounge
is the ultimate expression of the outdoor living trend. The combination of innovative design and
pioneering cushion technology mean outdoor lounge products can be left outside all year round and
in all weathers without any need to cover or protect. As with all the best ideas, simplicity is the key
with highly modular seating units providing the building blocks for each collection. This simplicity
allows a wide number of different units to integrate together to create almost limitless design
possibilities.
For the 2011 season Gloster are offering four modular ranges that utilise our pioneering 'Outdoor
Lounge' cushion technology - Cloud, Bloc, Club and Havana Modular. All of these ranges are highly
practical modular seating systems that are both unique and instantly recognisable in appearance.
Combining the latest Leisuretex® fabric with Glosters' ground breaking 'Outdoor Lounge' cushion
technology ensures flawless performance in even the harshest outdoor environments.
The fabrics used for seat and back cushions is Leisuretex® - similar to a traditional PVC sling, but
with the addition of 100% polypropylene yarns within the weave to offer increased comfort. An
additional backing layer adds to the virtually waterproof nature of this material and waterproof
sealing tape on every seam, ensures no water can enter the cushions. The cushions themselves are
designed to be virtually waterproof, so no water can enter into the cushion filling. In the unlikely
case that any water does enter, the design of the cushions - including a reticulated foam core,
mesh bases and well concealed Velcro seals - allows for it to drain away quickly.
S L I N G F U R N I T U R E
Available in a wide variety of designs and colours, Sling is a generic term for a woven, open-mesh
fabric made from a vinyl coated, high strength polyester yarn.
All Gloster’s sling furniture uses only the highest quality Textilene® woven vinyl.
Historically, slings are found combined with powder-coated aluminium frames.
However, due to its inherent good looks, exceptional comfort and practicality, Gloster also has
designed products that combine sling with both teak and stainless steel frames.
One of the main benefits of sling is comfort. When stretched taught between two side frames, sling
provides a yielding and infinitely variable seating surface that moulds to your individual body shape.
Gloster’s Textilene® woven vinyl is resistant to fading, mildew and wear & tear under even the
most severe weather conditions.
In addition to being extremely comfortable and pleasing to the eye, sling furniture is also
exceptionally easy to maintain and keep looking as good as new.
W O V E N F U R N I T U R E
All Gloster’s woven furniture is made from only the highest quality man -made fibre.
Soft to the touch, this remarkable material has many benefits including high suppleness, tear
resistance, UV resistance and weather resistance. The polyethylene based, extruded and through -
dyed wicker is also completely weatherproof, insensitive to differences in temperature and is
extremely hard wearing.
The basic structure of a woven chair is made from a fully welded, powder-coated aluminium frame.
Once welded, the entire frame is electro-statically powder coated in a tough, smooth finish that matches
the colour of the wicker. This way, the frame is fully protected against corrosion and becomes invisible
once it has been woven over.
Woven furniture can be left outside all year round.
When very cold, the weave will become stiffer than normal and when very hot, the weave will
become more elastic. However, it will revert to it's normal elasticity, once the ambient temperature
stabilises.
Gloster uses a more textured, thicker type of wicker than most other manufacturers.
Although this wicker is harder to weave, it is stronger, more resistant to tension, tearing and
splitting, wears better and gives a more natural feel to the product.
Gloster’s woven furniture is 100% hand-woven, making each item as individual as the person who
wove it.
GLOSTER MANUFACTURING
Gloster has had its own factory near Surabaya, Indonesia for over 20 years.
The factory is located close to the teak plantations and is run by an European management
team. Owning the factory is essential as it means Gloster can guarantee both quality of
production and consistent supply.
Gloster controls it’s own manufacturing at every level - from the selection of teak logs right through
to the final packaging and testing of the finished furniture.
Gloster maintains from 9 to 12 months stock in most raw materials, including teak, to ensure security
of supply. Gloster also runs its own log yard and saw mill on a 16.6 acre site close to it’s factory in
Surabaya.
Gloster works closely with the Indonesian government owned plantations.
Barcode tagging & a certified chain of custody system ensures that all logs can be traced back
to the source.
The factory uses a combination of both traditional woodworking skills and modern European
machinery to achieve extremely high quality standards. Due to exceptionally high
standards, all wood-working and the majority of our metal components are undertaken at the
Surabaya factory to ensure controlled supply and consistent quality.
G L O S T E R M A N U F A C T U R I N G . . . c o n t i n u e d
In addition to teak, Gloster is expert in the use of a variety of materials for the manufacture of its
furniture. Extensive use is made of stainless steel, powder coated aluminium and woven man-made
wicker, and there are specialist departments within the factory entirely devoted to the working of
these materials.
Within the factory, Gloster has invested in a state-of-the-art metal working facility that includes
welding and finishing of both aluminium and stainless steel, a shot peening and electro-polishing line
and a powder-coating facility.
Shot peening and electro-polishing forms part of Gloster’s proprietary stainless steel finish.
This finish is unique in the outdoor furniture industry and results in a virtually maintenance free
product, suitable for use even in coastal environments.
Gloster has its own fittings department at the factory which makes bespoke fittings from a variety of
materials, such as brass, stainless steel, zinc plated steel as well as nylon and other composite
materials.
All Gloster products have a batch number which identifies the manufacturing date and revision.
This makes any future ordering of spare parts trouble free and guarantees the replacement part will fit
the furniture.
Gloster also runs its own cushion manufacturing facility at its USA distribution centre.
G L O S T E R T E S T I N G
Gloster operates two test centres - one in the Surabaya factory in Indonesia and a second in the
prototyping facility in Dongguan, China. The capabilities of these centres include...
Load testing machine:
Seating products must withstand a cycle of loading 140kg on the seat 15,000 times.
Rocking Machine:
Seating products must withstand 5,000 motions forward and 5,000 backward with a 70kg load.
Push Testing Machine:
Determines the strength of joints. Gloster products must pass 10,000 strokes with 70kg on the seat.
UV Test Chamber:
This tests the UV resistance of various materials. Man-made wicker for example must withstand 5,000
hours of exposure.
Drop Test Device:
Evaluation of the impact strength of seating pieces - 140kg load is released from a height of 15cm.
Packing Drop Test Device:
Used to verify whether the packaging provides sufficient impact protection.
In addition to the above, static weights are used to test the strength of the furniture according to
various ISO, ASTM, BS and EN standards. A full description of Gloster’s testing protocols as well as
individual test reports are available on request.
D E S I G N E R S
Of course, great manufacturing is wasted without great design and Gloster currently works with
several world-renown designers to create timeless, elegant furniture.
Axel Enthoven (born in 1947) is President and founder of Enthoven Associates Design Consultants
and is assisted by his 2 partners, Jean-Pierre Geelen and Alain Denis. This international design
studio has offices in both Belgium and France and agencies in Thailand and Korea.
Povl Eskildsen began gathering furniture design & production knowledge over two decades ago whilst
working in his fathers furniture factory. Having furthered a significantly 'hands -on' early interest in
furniture design with the appropriate education, Povl studied and graduated in furniture design from
the School of Architecture in Aarhus, Denmark in 1986.
Mark Gabbertas is an award winning furniture designer based in London. Having previously worked in
advertising, he changed careers and trained to be a cabinet-maker over 15 years ago. An intrinsic
part of Marks design process is the belief that at all times, the design of an object is governed by an
appreciation of the commercial realities that surround it. He believes passionately that if a great
design does not sell, perhaps it is not such a great design. Mark’s flagship projects with Gloster,
Eclipse & Cloud, only substantiate this concept.
Grown by it’s namesake John Caldwell, the John Caldwell Design Company has successfully expanded
in its own right from the first commercial design sold by John at the age of 19. Always interested in
using the latest light-weight, durable, and easy to clean materials for his outdoor lines, John
Caldwell has enjoyed and indeed currently enjoys a successful and long term relationship with
Gloster.
