PREZ SEZBy the time you read this, the BIG game is over. The game was a defensive strug-gle, and the new commercials for me were “meh” at best. There were a few I liked, but there was a lot more that I didn’t. I was pretty much underwhelmed by it all.

That pretty much sums up my opinion of the GMC display at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) too, this past January. The GMC display was nearly identical to last year’s. The big focus this year was on the all-new, redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra pick-up truck, with special emphasis on the “multipro tailgate”. Now based on the crowds that I’ve seen around that tailgate - both last fall and this winter, I think that option will be a smash hit, so long as GM doesn’t over price it. This year’s auto show was the last winter NAIAS. In 18 months, it will switch to a summer-based show.

I have my first indoor custom car show this weekend and the 67th-annual Detroit Autorama is a month away. I am looking forward to seeing some great looking chrome and paint jobs at both these shows. I hope it will spark some creative juices for working on my rides as well. This week I also start working with my local downtown development authority to start planning our weekly Friday night cruise-ins that stretch from mid-May to mid-September.

Are you involved in your local community? Are you involved in your local car club, charity, or special interest? I hope so. Car and truck people are the most generous people I know. They not only give money, but they give time and of themselves. Pass that generosity on, won’t you?

I hope you remember your special sweetheart this month and do something special for him or her. Dennis Carol, GTC Prez.

…..because everything else is just a card and cheap box of chocolates!

Special shout out to Valentine Buick-GMC this month, located in the Dayton-Fairborn Ohio area, for using their logo.

The GMC Chevette

By: Dennis Carol

The GMC Chevette is the only automobile that GMC has sold, in the modern era. GMC sold GMC badged Pontiac-built taxi cabs to Yellow Cab Company back in the early 1930s. The GMC Chevette was sold from 1992 to 1995 by General Mo-tors do Brazil specifically for the Argentinian market, where it was sold by both Chevrolet and Renault dealers at the time.

The GMC Chevette was a variation of the General Motors T-car platform which included the Chevrolet Chevette, Pontiac T-1000, Vauxhall Chevette and Astra, Opel Kadett, and Isuzu Gemini. The GMC Chevette was offered as both a 2-door sedan and as a 4-door sedan. It was powered by a 1.4-liter overhead camshaft en-gine. An optional 1.7-liter Isuzu diesel engine was also available. A pickup truck version of the Chevette was sold under the Chevrolet 500 name.

GMC Astro 95

This Thrifty Drug GMC Astro 95 is pulling a set of “Wiggle Wagons” in mid 1980s Northern California. Note the Multiple License Plates required for each state the tractor operated in and the “Dragfoiler” air deflector and traction chain hangers on the trailers. Chain racks config-ured this way are still the preferred

configuration. A good driver can hang a complete six chain set of iron in about 30min versus the 50-60min if they are all hung on the tractor. The square tanks allow additional fuel to be carried in the same space along the frame rail; the abil-ity to operate for 2-3 days on a single tank became more important after the ’73 and ’79 shortages.

GMC COEsThe COE really came into their element in the 60s and 70s as the Interstate High-way System built out and truck traffic and trailer lengths grew. Because most states in the eastern half of the country had very restrictive laws about total over-all vehi-cle length, equipment design had to think within the proverbial box. This Mack COE with a 40′ semi-trailer represents the typi-cal over-the road semi-trailer rig in the US during the pre-deregulation era.

The only way to squeeze a larger trailer into the same length and width “box” was to shrink the cab. The ad copy of the tractor OEMs shows that they competed to offer the shortest Bumper to Back of Cab (BBC). Operator comfort played second fiddle to the squeezing out every cubic foot of cargo space.

Yeah Motor’s

The GMC cannonball semi-truck is named after stuntman Erwin Baker. GMC used him in their early marketing campaigns to promote the durability of their vehicles. For instance, in 1927 Erwin drove a two-ton GMC tanker full of water from one end of the country to the other. It was a 3,700-mile road trip beginning in New York City and ending in San Francisco. During the trip he averaged about 27 mph over the five-day, 17-hour excursion. So, when GMC decided to produce a semi-truck representative of the type of durability and performance people thought of, they chose the name “Cannonball.” It was Erwin Baker’s nickname.

1949 GMC 3/4 Ton FC152Woah. We’re on a roll with the outlandish trucks now. This one is as rare as it is fun to stare at. Obviously, the exterior paint scheme is the first thing that stands out (Bronze Firemist), but look deeper at this truck and you’ll see some excellent worksmanship. This truck underwent a four-year, frame-off restoration and the finished product is stunning!

1955 GMC Tow TruckHere’s a truck to tow all the other trucks on this list. The excellently-done restora-tion job on this tow-truck makes has turned this work-only into a work-and-play vehicle! The Sky Blue paint job is a classic and an amazing frame-on complete restoration of this truck was carefully performed including the in-line six-cylinder motor. What a beauty!
