From the Pastor …..

Ash Wednesday has come and gone, but it propels us into Lent. Last Wednesday was especially hectic around the church. I didn’t even hear about the tragedy that unfolded in Florida until I got home. It is a devastating reminder of evil in the world. What struck me the most from the incident, however, was an image that was shared across news services and social media.

There was a devastated parent/adult holding another distraught person. The startling part of the image was that the grieving women had the cross symbol in ashes on their foreheads. They had obviously celebrated the holy day at their congregation early in the day. All I could think was “from the dust we came and to the dust we shall return.” The consequence of sin still brings death as it did in the beginning.

It was a stark reminder of our finitude. It is also a reminder of the great amount of evil in this world. Most importantly, it is a remind-er that we as believers should not lose hope or become cynical. We are marked by the power of the cross. In troubled times, we are called to bring “good news.” Sometimes that “bringing” takes more preparation and effort, but it’s still an essential trait of those who follow Jesus.

Use this Lent to deepen your communication with the hope-bringer. Use this Lent to shine God’s light. Use this Lent to confront evil. Use this Lent to transform your hearts. Use this Lent to get ready. Our God shines even in tragedy. Let us make sure we don’t do anything that dampens or diminishes God’s grace-filled light.

Have you ever heard of the Resurrection Eggs? If not, they are 12 plastic eggs in an egg carton. Each egg has in it a "story bit" about the story of Jesus from Palm Sunday to Resurrection. A story bit is something teachers use to remind students about a person or a story. In this case, the eggs have something in them as a reminder about Jesus' last week on Earth (ex. a spear to remind us that they pierced Jesus). Our plans are to gather items to make a carton for each child. Then on the evening of Palm Sunday--March 25th--we will complete the project. More info to follow about this special night later.

We need 50 egg cartons---Styrofoam ---not the corrugated kind. They need to have a flat inside top. Only 12 hole cartons. Please begin to save these and bring to Grand Hall. There will be a collection box there. Thank you for your help!!!!!!

Methodist Men’s Breakfast Sunday, March 4 at 7:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall

All men of the church are invited.

Our preschool celebrated the love Jesus has for little children with a Valentine party. Shown enjoying cupcakes and strawberries are Ella Claire Dixon, Aubree Brewer, Hadley Smith, Kinley Vancil, Asher Keeton, and Anna Hudson Brunetti (washing dishes).

We extend our love and sympathy to Ricky Howe in the recent passing of his mother, Elise Howe. Funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon, February 21.

We extend our love and sympathy to Zack and Tori Smith in the recent passing of his grandfather, Don Smith. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER

It is our privilege to welcome Sarah Yancy Dixon into the fellowship of our church. Sarah has been an active part of our church for several years. She is married to Kyle Dixon, and has one daughter, Ella Claire.
