hese days you hear a lot about the ever growing importance
of conserving natural resources both at home and at work. Here at the Healing Place we have decided to do our part as well. There are a number of green projects that are in process and we are excited about the future possibilities to save time, money and resources.
One of the most exciting projects we are working on currently is the addition of solar panels at the men’s facility. This initiative which is being done in partnership with Holocene, LLC, will reduce our hot water bills and fix our natural gas prices into the foreseeable future. A similar initiative at the women’s facility is under study now and we are hoping that the site will be suitable for this venture as well. We are also collecting water for irrigation from our roofs, recycling aluminum and other scrap metals, composting kitchen waste, growing “victory gardens”,

he Healing Place staff and clients were treated to a special guest in November-- well-known author Mitch Albom. Albom,
whose previous books include “for one more day”, “tuesdays with Morrie”, and “the five people you meet in heaven”, spoke to the audience about his latest project “have a little faith”. This book is based on a personal journey between two worlds, two men, two faiths and two communities. His message to us was about the transition of a homeless person and how having faith helped him overcome his challenges to rebuild his life. Mitch commended the men and women for their dedication towards working on their recovery and was humbled by their commitment to overcome the obstacles they face regarding their addictions. We are very thankful to Hospice of Wake County, The A. J. Fletcher Foundation and Dr. Robert and Carol Bilbro for making this event possible.
Mitch Albom visits The Healing Place“have a little faith”
hile a turbulent economic year is drawing to a close, The Healing Place of Wake County has a strong incentive to
obtain new and increased gifts from individuals and organizations. This incentive is due to the result of a $100,000 Stewards Fund providing challenge grant that will match end-of-year contributions from new donors.
If The Healing Place raises $100,000 from new gifts and pledges (or increased gifts from previous donors) by December 31, 2009, the challenge will have been met, and an additional $100,000 from the Stewards Fund will be donated to The Healing Place. If we do not raise all of the $100,000, The Healing Place will not be eligible for any of the matching funds.
“While The Healing Place continues to be incredibly efficient and effective in reducing homelessness and helping people turn their lives around, the economic conditions have made fundraising challenging this year,” said Michael
Painter, The Healing Place Board Chair. “The Stewards Fund challenge grant insures donors that their contributions will have a major impact in reducing homelessness in our community.”
The Stewards Fund provides funding for organizations in the human services field and is administered out of Raleigh, NC. The Stewards Fund provided a matching grant last fiscal year to The Healing Place of Wake County.
If you are unsure whether your end-of-year contribution is eligible for the match, please call 919 838-9800 and ask for either Lisa Rousseau or Terri Conyers.
Please help us meet our goal and “help people find their way back”.

a problem. Keytha had suffered liver damage and at age 20 she was diagnosed with advance stage alcoholism. By age 29 the doctors gave her ten years to live due to pancreatitis. That’s when Keytha felt her lifestyle had to change, and she came to The Healing Place. “I felt at home”, Keytha says when she arrived.
“I became hooked on recovery because I was able to understand for the first time about the physical and mental obsession”, Keytha says, “and now I am able to take care of my children, pay bills on time, consider others and practice honesty and willingness. My life is whole and complete again”.
Marvin’s and Keytha’s stories are testaments to what the program has to offer to anyone who feels they are ready to face their addictions. These are the men and women who are the first faces of hope that you will see when you enter our program, and they are living proof that you can overcome whatever obstacles are put in your way.

Getting to Know Marvin Bullock and Keytha Miller: We Witness Miracles Every Day
he miracles that Marvin Bullock and Keitha Miller, Detox Monitors at the Men’s and Women’s
Facilities, witness are too many to count because they are on a daily basis every time a client enters our program. And 9 times out of 10 they will start in Detox where Marvin and Keytha have the enormous responsibility of overseeing the welfare of an individual who is non-medically detoxing. This involves checking the individual’s blood pressure and temperature utilizing the CIWA-AR scale for detoxification off of alcohol and COWS for withdrawal from opiates and being very observant to any adverse effects to the process.
“It’s not easy to come off drugs and alcohol, but you can do it without having to administer any other drugs”, says Marvin. And our Detox Monitors are there to encourage the clients to stick it out and they are living proof. “The only ones that you cannot go “cold turkey” with are (drugs) in the benzodiazepine family, which are: xanax, valium and sedatives of any kind”.
Marvin started working for The Healing Place in May, 2002, and has been in recovery for over 8 years as an alumnus. What gave him the willpower to live? “Because the way I was living wasn’t worth it”, Marvin says and he sings the praises of how this “unique program has saved his life”. Marvin also attributes his success to the Recovery Dynamics© Curriculum that helped him better understand his addiction and he is able to apply those teachings to his life everyday.
Keytha Miller has been working for The Healing Place Women’s Detox facility since June, 2007, and has been in recovery for over 3 years. Keytha is the oldest of three children. Her father drank and was abusive to her mother, and when he died, Keytha started drinking more heavily. “I have a large family history of drinking”, Keytha says, “going way back to grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles”. She grew up thinking drinking was normal which in turn made it easy for her not to think that she had

The Chef’s Corner By Chef Rob, Director of Food Services
“Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year” traditional Germanic Wassailing song. c. 1548
Happy Holidays everyone, it’s Chef Rob and it’s time for my final edition of this year’s “Chef’s Corner”. I cannot believe it has been a year already! I have had such a wonderful and food inspiring year. I hope you all have enjoyed my recipes. I certainly have had fun creating them for you. I have one more to share with you before signing off until next year. This last recipe is for Wassail. Wassail is a hot, spiced punch often associated with Christmas. It is designed to celebrate the act of “toasting the gods for a bountiful harvest”. The term itself is a contraction of the Middle English phrase wæs hæil, meaning, “Be healthy”. It is particularly popular in Germanic countries. Since this is the perfect time for that wonderful tree fruit the apple, I thought it might be nice to do a drink that warms the soul and brings children and family together with the aroma of spices and crispy winter apples. Happy Holidays!

Neater egg slicing. If you plan on making deviled eggs
this holiday season, here is a great way to keep the eggs
from sticking to your chef’s knife. Spray both sides of your
knife blade with nonstick cooking spray. The eggs can now
be neatly sliced with no crumbling or sticking to the blade.
Respray the knife blade as needed.

In Memoriam
he Healing Place of Wake County staff, alumni and friends were saddened by the recent unexpected passing of two alumni.
Steve S., the 370th man to become a Silver Chip alumnus, passed away Thursday October 15th. Steve worked part-time for The Healing Place as a Detox monitor. A memorial service was held at The Healing Place Tuesday October 20th.
Rusty S., the 192nd man to become a Silver Chip alumnus, passed away Friday October 23rd. Rusty was a former employee of The Healing Place, having worked in administration and enterprise.
Though saddened by these losses, we find comfort in knowing that both men died sober, had restored relationships with their families, and touched the lives of countless others.

eing a volunteer and a sharefish just go hand in hand. You cannot be one without the other. And that’s where Oie Osterkamp’s story begins.
“I love everything about The Healing Place,” says advisory board member B
T
Oie Osterkamp. “Whenever I bring people here for a tour, they always leave shaking their heads about the amazing things that happen here”. Oie has been bringing people here for tours since 2003, when he discovered The Healing Place while exploring volunteer opportunities. His first experience at The Healing Place is chronicled in his book, Being a Sharefish in a Selfish World, where he devotes an entire chapter on how he came here to make a difference and realized The Healing Place had made a difference in him.

Respray the knife blade as needed.

he Healing Place of Wake County staff, alumni and friends were saddened by the recent unexpected passing of two alumni.

“I love everything about The Healing Place,” says advisory board member B

Oie Osterkamp. “Whenever I bring people here for a tour, they always leave shaking their heads about the amazing things that happen here”. Oie has been bringing people here for tours since 2003, when he discovered The Healing Place while exploring volunteer opportunities. His first experience at The Healing Place is chronicled in his book, Being a Sharefish in a Selfish World, where he devotes an entire chapter on how he came here to make a difference and realized The Healing Place had made a difference in him.

She grew up thinking drinking was normal which in turn made it easy for her not to think that she had

he Healing Place staff and clients were treated to a special guest in November-- well-known author Mitch Albom. Albom,
whose previous books include “for one more day”, “tuesdays with Morrie”, and “the five people you meet in heaven”, spoke to the audience about his latest project “have a little faith”. Robert and Carol Bilbro for making this event possible.

hile a turbulent economic year is drawing to a close, The Healing Place of Wake County has a strong incentive to
obtain new and increased gifts from individuals and organizations.
Please help us meet our goal and “help people find their way back”.

hese days you hear a lot about the ever growing importance
of conserving natural resources both at home and at work.
