I N G R E D E R E U T P R O F I C I A S THE ACADEMIC YEAR BEGINS... Welcome to ‘The Hive’ - our brand new newsletter, which is appropriate considering last Monday’s ‘word of the day’ was ‘hive mind’! Just like a hive, at St Bees School we believe in working together as a team and encouraging our students to act as a community, share their knowledge and thoughts. This is exactly what we intend to replicate with our newsletter! It’s been an incredibly busy summer, not only hosting over 300 children on our fantastic STEAM Forest School programme, but also in preparing, painting, renovating and generally making sure the School is ready for the start of term. Our students dived straight in at the deep end and things soon heated up in the science labs as Year 7 carried out their first science experiment using a Bunsen burner. They developed and explained their own hypotheses, discovered boiling points and became true scientists in the making. The students are undertaking their first Global Awareness Programme (GAP) lessons of the term, working in teams across all year groups to debate and answer a challenging question. This week the question is “Smart appearance or smart clever? Which is more important for your future life?” The GAP process is designed to encourage the students to think outside the box, debate and work together in groups where views may differ. After researching and justifying their opinions and views the groups then present their findings to the rest of the class. Keep an eye out on social media for their views... To round off the week, staff were treated to the smells of freshly baked muffins yesterday (in an impressive array of flavours!) as our students started their practice baking sessions for our Macmillan Afternoon Tea on Friday 27th September! THE ACADEMIC YEAR BEGINS.. .Welcome to ‘The Hive’ - our brand new newsletter, which is appropriate considering last Monday’s ‘word of the day’ was ‘hive mind’! Just like a hive, at St Bees School we believe in working together as a team and encouraging our students to act as a community, share their knowledge and thoughts. It’s been an incredibly busy summer, not only hosting over 300 children on our fantastic STEAM Forest School

programme, but also in preparing, painting, renovating and generally making sure the School is ready for the start of term.

Our students dived straight in at the deep end and things soon heated up in the science labs as Year 7 carried out their first science experiment using a Bunsen burner. They developed and explained their own hypotheses, discovered boiling points and became true scientists in the making.

SPOTLIGHT ON... SCHOOL HOUSEOur recently refurbished

52-bed boarding house ‘School House’ was put to the test this summer as it was filled to the brim for the first time in four years. And what a roaring success! Home to students from all over the world, it won’t be long until this cultural melting pot will be full once more.

Students have a variety of different boarding options – they can be weekly, full or even flexi-boarders (the perfect chance to give it a go if you fancy it).

For those in full boarding, our weekend activities will provide an exciting change of environment and will take our students on all sorts of adventures!

We want our students to feel at home at School and our supportive environment allows this. Students are in single, double or triple rooms, with large common areas and kitchen facilities perfect for relaxing in the evenings.

Speaking with a former resident of School House, boarding life at St Bees School certainly seems to be full of mischief and activity. The stories shared consisted of hiding places with impromptu sporting events and tournaments amongst the more competitive boarders - sometimes in the boarding house! The stories gave a real sense of belonging, making ‘friends for life’ and an atmosphere very much like that of a family.

Our students in years 7, 8, 9 and 12

will soon get a taste of this during their requested ‘school sleepover’ in the boarding house - an opportunity they have asked for in order to bond with their classmates across all four year groups. The request came in the form of a letter to the Headmaster from all students, complete with a promise of best behaviour and offers to give up break time to help prepare the rooms! We have listened to their request and we are looking forward to welcoming them all to School House in October.

12,000 MILES TO BUY SCHOOL UNIFORMHave you read the incredible story of Steven’s Journey yet?

Steven Xie (attended St Bees School 2000 - 2004) took an epic 12,000 mile trip across the world in his own car (through China, Mongolia, Russia, Finland, Denmark) with his family to visit St Bees School just to buy some uniform! When we asked Steven what made him

want to take the trip, Steven replies “St Bees School has always been special to me”. His rationale for driving rather than flying? “To have an epic road trip with my kids”.

If you haven’t read this story, click the image on the right to read the blog or head to the link below: https://www.stbeesschool.co.uk/blog/

Quiz: There may be 52 beds in School House, but how many bedrooms are there?

Send your answers to [email protected] before Friday 6th September and the correct answers will receive their very own St Bees School bumble bee.?
