Now in our

2nd year

Well what a month we had in September!

Inside you can read all about the Garden and

Antiques shows held in the church hall - and the

details of all our meetings and future projects.

We’ve been described as the hardest working

pub group in the country - a nice accolade but if

you know us you’ll be well aware that we’re not

doing this for any praise!

We’re simply doing it to make Holywell Green an

even better place to live. It’s not always easy and

at times the tasks ahead can be daunting - but the

effort being put in by a small group of people is

just remarkable.

Over the last few weeks we’ve had to hold even

more meetings - we just don’t always have

enough time to get through everything at our

fortnightly get-togethers at the Duke of York.

So of course any help that you can offer would be

most welcome.

You’ll see in this issue that we have numerous

events in the pipeline - extending right through

until next summer!

But we never lose sight of the whole basis of this

campaign - the community ownership of the

Holywell Inn. A commercial venture run on a

society basis - all profit will go to funding com-

munity services and facilities that local people so

require.

The pub would be at the hub of this venture - but

we are patently aware how many local residents

want to see a tea-room/coffee shop facility - and

we welcome discussion on this point.

We’re always available to have a chat about any-

thing to do with the campaign - and these news-

letters are freely available from Bev in the shop

next to the Holywell every month to keep you up

to date with everything that’s happening.

And of course we constantly update our website

and Facebook pages.

This is a serious venture - requiring the utmost

dedication and effort. Please remember this is

forever - if we were to lose this pub then it’s

gone for good! We will do everything we can

to prevent that.

Mr Gale may think we’ll eventually give up -

he’s simply wrong!

So please read on . . .

The 2nd Annual Holywell Green Garden Produce Show

So once again out went the challenge - time for all the local

gardeners, jam makers, allotment owners to take part in the

annual garden produce show.

And on Saturday September 6th - on a day of pouring rain -

that’s exactly what happened in Holywell Green church hall!

There were over 60 competition entries - so our judge Andrew

Tyres from sponsors Armitage’s Garden centre really had his

work cut out!

The overall winner on the day was Alison Cowton (pictured

right receiving her trophy from group vice-chairman Chris Judd)

and this was a well deserved award for her fantastic efforts.

A full list of winners is available on our website and of course

we will be doing it all again next year!

The day raised a further £300 for the group and we would like

to say a special thank you to Emma Smith, Michael Holroyd and

Matthew Breton for all their help in making the day a success.

And of course we couldn’t do these type of events without the

assistance of Father Rodney from St Andrews in Stainland, who

is always happy to lend us his display tables.

We would also like to say thank you to our sponsors and all

the other local businesses that donated prizes etc.

Please remember to support them whenever you can!

Andrew Tyres & Jo Dales from Armitage’s

Garden Centre in Birchencliffe sponsored the

event.

We also thank Tesco Brighouse, Wilkinson’s Halifax, B&Q

Huddersfield, Morrison’s Elland and Sainsbury’s Halifax who all

donated prizes or vouchers.

The show was covered by both the Huddersfield Examiner

and Halifax Courier.

And finally we have our own ’quiet’ hero Graham Gent -

whom without his assistance the church hall events would

never take place. He even missed going to watch his beloved

Halifax Town to oversee everything on the day!

Thanks Graham!

But being the nice people

we are (well we think so!) -

we insisted that he didn't

do that on two consecutive

home games!

So we ‘chauffeured’ him

back and forth to the next

match and he was delighted

with the 5-0 win!

However back in the

church hall it was down to

business - and some serious

business at that!

For the second year in suc-

cession we welcomed TV

celebrity Tim Hogarth and

his assistant Steven back to

the church hall to assess

and value a whole host of

items.

This event once again com-

manded a huge attendance

with people turning up

more than an hour before

the actual official start time.

Tim was only supposed to

stay a couple of hours but

of course he was with us

for the whole afternoon.

A fascinating array of items

were placed before him and

Tim was (as usual) never

hurried in his conversations

with people about their

possessions.

The now famous Holywell

Tea Coffee and Cakes stand

did its usual roaring busi-

ness - and the whole after-

noon raised just short of a

staggering £600 for group

funds.

Originally the idea for this

came from Chris Judd and

it’s been a real winner for

us.

So once again this firm fa-

vourite will be back on the

agenda for next year!

Thanks Chris.

And speaking of events -

you will see on the back

page the things we have

lined up for next year!

But it doesn’t stop there.

Do you have any ideas for

something that may appeal

to the village?

Just let us know and we’ll

get on with planning it -

preferably with your help.

Don’t worry that your idea

might be a bit unusual -

that’s exactly what we’re

looking for!

We’re well aware that

Holywell Green has never

had anything like this before

- that’s why we’re deter-

mined to bring about

change in the village.

And we want ideas that

appeal to any section of the

community - seriously it

can be anything.

We’ll do everything we can

to bring your idea to real-

ity.

September has shown just

how much local people

have enjoyed coming along

to these shows.

We were thanked by two

ladies at the Antiques show

- just for giving them a

chance to sit together and

have a cup of tea, a cake

and a good old ‘natter’ -

something sadly lacking in

the village.

That’s what this is about -

creating a real community

feel and giving people from

all walks of life a chance to

have a little bit more social

interaction.

And of course it makes it

feel worthwhile for those of

us involved.

Looking into the future . . .

Working on the basis that these two must have

had enough Californian sunshine - we are in the

early stages of organising the first ever Summer

Jazz and Folk Festival to be held in this area!

Much loved by all involved with the Holywell cam-

paign Marc & Kenny are expected back next sum-

mer to be the main feature of this spectacular

event - which will be held on the beautiful lawns of

the Old Golf House in Outlane. The event is actu-

ally Marc’s idea.

Within hours of announcing this we’ve already had

offers of help from Steve Miller in Holland and Paul

Smith from the midlands. Brilliant singer songwriter

Liam Merrimann from Waterford has also agreed

to play.

We’ve got a great track record of putting on music

shows so watch this space for developments.

And with the help of Paul and Steve you just never

know who might be playing!

This will be a major event for us and as always if

you fancy getting involved - well you know what to

do.

And just watch out for Caz - as you know that Sax

can turn up anywhere!

We’re also putting plans together for the inaugural

Holywell on the Greens golf tournament.

To be held at Bradley Hall Golf Club in the spring this

will be an invitation team event with significant prizes -

including a car and luxury holiday - so once again keep

your eyes on the newsletters for further details.

The event will be followed by a Sportspersons dinner -

open to all - with top class entertainment and food.

And just to finish - we feel it only right to keep you up to date with some of the things happening

‘off-camera’.

As many of you know we’re attempting to secure funding to purchase the premises. We have

been allocated some grant funding to secure a formal valuation of the building - but despite nu-

merous attempts including a letter from our solicitors, and an offer of payment for his time , Mr

Gale absolutely refuses to allow access for such a valuation to take place.

Undeterred - we fight on but you can see what we’re up against!
