line and the 'Dogs would quicklyanswer back by cutting through theFoxes defense like a knife throughwarm butter. Jaden Matthewsfinished off the drive with a 20-yard touchdown, his sixth of theyear. The PAT by Honaker tied thegame at 7 and the drive was 65yards that took less than a minuteoff the clock.

Howe held Caddo Mills to a punton their next possession whichgave Howe the ball at their own 22yard line. Howe took nearly threeminutes off of the clock andfinished off the 78-yard drive witha 16-yard touchdown bysophomore Mason Riggs. Thatgave the Bulldogs their first lead ofthe night at 13-7 after Honaker'sPAT kick sailed wide right.

The "Black Plague" dressed inwhite on Friday night forced aturnover when Cooper Akinspicked off a Michael Decker passout of the sky to give the 'Dogs theball at their own 47-yard line withonly 28 seconds left in the firstquarter. 53 yards later, Howe'sTyler Grisham took the ball over

from the five yard line, his seventhtouchdown of the year. Howe gotback on scoring track whenMatthews scored untouched for the2-point conversion. Howe led 21-7 with 10:47 remaining in thesecond quarter.

On Caddo Mills' next possession,Ty Harvey would intercept hissecond pass in as many weekswhich gave Howe the ball at theirown 34 yard line. Howe, who hadthree one-play drives a week agoadded another one when Matthewsscampered 66 yards for the score.Howe's 28-7 lead with 8:38 left inthe second quarter seemed as if thegame was nearing the "out ofreach" situation early on in thegame.

Caddo Mills was forced to puntagain on their next possessionwhich set up Howe's offense deepin the shadow of their ownendzone at the four yard line. Some nice runs got Howe awayfrom their own goal line, but theFoxes forced a Riggs fumblewhich gave them the ball at theHowe 34 yard line. Howe High School ranked in top4.7 percent in TEA ratings

The Texas Education Agency lastweek announced that more than 400campuses that achieved a MetStandard rating in the 2016 stateaccountability ratings also earnedall distinction designationsapplicable to their individualschool. Howe High School was oneof the 400 campuses to earn thehonor of the approximate 8,500 inTexas. Even more impressive isthat HHS was one of only 74 highschools in Texas to earn alldistinctions.

Distinction designations areawarded to campuses based onachievement in performanceindicators relative to a group of 40campuses of similar type, size, andstudent demographics. Dependingon campus grade levels and type, the number of potential distinctiondesignations can vary. Up to sevendistinction designations can beearned for

• Academic Achievement inEnglish Language Arts/Reading;• Academic Achievement inMathematics;• Academic Achievement inScience;• Academic Achievement inSocial Studies;• Top 25 Percent: StudentProgress;

• Top 25 Percent: ClosingPerformance Gaps; and• Postsecondary Readiness.

Howe Superintendent KevinWilson stated that Howe ISD isconsistently around fivedistinctions on an annual basis butis really proud of the sevendistinction accomplishment.

"It's a big deal." said Wilson. "Tobe in the top five percent is notbad."

Wilson went on to praise theeducators for the results of the testscores. "Obvioulsy this doesn'thappen by accident. A lot of hardwork goes in to it by our staff andour students."

Wilson says that even though thehigh school is being honored fortheir distinctions, it's a cumulativeprocess where the recognitionshould also be shared district-wide.

“Earning one or more campusdistinctions is noteworthy andshould be a source of pride in acommunity,” said Commissionerof Education Mike Morath.“Earning all possible distinctionsis a significant accomplishmentand should signal to parents thatthere is extraordinary work takingplace on that campus.”

Other surrounding schools thatreceived the distinction were BellsElementary, Denison High School,Mayes Elementary (Denison), andPottsboro High School.

later, Jarrett scored from 19 yardsout to cut Howe's lead in half to28-14.

Howe's offense was stalled out ontheir next possession as the 'Dogscouldn't convert a fourth and shortat the Caddo Mills 43 yard line.

Jarrett would punch the endzonefor the third time, this one fromthe 34 yard line and all of asudden Howe's lead was cut to onescore at 28-20. Seth Seiboldintercepted the two-pointconversion after a bad snap on thePAT.

Caddo Mills had all of themomentum heading into theintermission trailing 28-20. Theyheld on to that momentum byforcing Howe to punt on the firstpossession of the second half. Butthe game changed for good whenmiscommunication from thesidelines to the backfield, alongwith pressure from Cameron Blesicaused a fumble that TannerHartsfield caused and recovered atthe Howe 36 yard line. TheBulldogs capitalized withGrisham's 3-yard score to stretchthe Howe lead to 35-20 with 5:54remaining in the third.

Caddo Mills put together animpressive 73-yard drive byfeeding their horse, Jarratt, whofinished off the scoring with a 3-yarder of his own. That closed thegap to 35-27 at the 2:09 mark inthe third.

Howe kept their foot on the gasand Riggs went 89 yards on thefirst play of the next drive tocompletely take any air out of theFoxes that might have been

lingering. The PAT gave Howe a 42-27 lead with 1:47 left in the third.

Howe's defense stopped Caddo Millson their next possession when Blesi,Mike Helpenstell and Zack Danielsall combined on a sack to turn theball over on downs and give Howethe ball at the Caddo Mills 40 yardline. Moments later, quarterbackBrandon Wall scored from the 30yard line to push Howe's lead to 49-27.

Caddo Mills punted on their nextpossession which set up Howe attheir own 42 yard line. DylanMoreau popped off a 52-yard run toput Howe in scoring position late inthe game. Facing a third down,Riggs found the endzone for the thirdtime, this one from the 6 yard line. The touchdown and PAT gave Howethe 56-27 final score as Caddo Millsturned the ball over on downs in theirfinal possession.

Howe has now rushed for over 500yards a staggering four times since2014. They reached the mark twiceagainst Tom Bean and in last year'splayoff game with Edgewood.

The Howe Enterprise mistakenlyposted on Facebook that the 578yards rushing was a school record. We apologize as Howe rushed for589 in 2014 versus Tom Bean.

Five counties unite to assistveterans in need

Dedication ceremony honors new North TexasVeterans Court

ROCKWALL, TX – September 21,2016 – The dedication ceremonyfor the first regional Veterans Courtin Texas was held Friday,September 16, at the RockwallCounty Courthouse. The NorthTexas Veterans Court is one of 26Veterans Courts in Texas and theonly one that represents more thanone county. Encompassing fivecounties – Collin, Rockwall,Kaufman, Grayson and Fannin– and presided by Texas StateDistrict Judge John Roach, thestate’s first regional Veterans Courtserves as a pilot program for thisunique model to assist men andwomen who have served in ourcountry’s military.

"We couldn't let a veteran, becauseof a geographic line, not have aVeterans Court," Judge John Roachsaid.

Veterans Courts work to divertveterans with service-connectedmental health or substance abusedisorders out of the traditional courtsystem and into highly supervisedlong-term treatment solutions andsupervision. Most Veterans Courtsare operated by county, if at all.Although state law allows the set-

up of Veterans Courts, it is does notmandate or fund them, making itdifficult for smaller towns. Theregional Veterans Court model ismost beneficial in rural areas.

The ceremony began with thePresentation of Colors presented bythe Rockwall Police Honor Guard.Senator Bob Hall, a veteranhimself, served as keynote speakerOther key attendees were ThomasPalladino, Texas VeteransCommission Executive Director;Joe Brown, Grayson CountyCriminal District Attorney; JimmyPetty, Grayson County VeteranServices Officer; Tim Hartley,Rockwall Defense Attorney; KendaCulpepper, Rockwall CountyCriminal District Attorney; GregWillis, Collin County CriminalDistrict Attorney; Kaufman CountyJudge Bobby Rich, and ArmyVeteran Colt Floyd.

During his speech, Palladinoreminded guests of a quote byTheodore Roosevelt that definesthe purpose of the North TexasVeterans Court: “A man who isgood enough to shed his blood forhis country is good enough to begiven a square deal afterwards.”

Faith by Debbie Wallis

“He who finds his life will loose it,and he who loses his life for My sakewill find it,” Matthew 10:39.

There’s an old country song that says“looking for love in all the wrongplaces,” and it’s a sad fact. Peoplelook to feel alive, in all the wrongplaces. Fulfillment cannot be foundin relationships, wealth, possessions,or success. You may think you’vereached your destiny when youclimb to the top of the corporateladder or when you have the man orthe woman of your dreams, or maybeyou won the lotto and was able tobuy everything you’ve had on yourwish list since you were 9 years old.But that will not bring everlastingfulfillment. You may be pouring allyour heart (mind, will and emotions)and all your strength into whateveryou think will create your happinessand fulfillment. You don’t have tobe like those who try to find their lifein the temporary things of thisworld. With the last breath you takeyou will leave everything you spentyour life acquiring behind. “Foreverything there is a season, a timefor every activity under the heaven.A time to be born and a time to die.A time to plant and a time to

www.evercleanhbsolutions.com

harvest,” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. Ifyour life is spent on gaining morethis world has to offer in the endyou will lack contentment, fulfillment, security, peace, andjoy. You will never gain whatyou’ve craved. Contentment isfound in Jesus. Don’t bedeceived into seeking life inanything that is temporary. “Forwhat will it profit a man if hegains the whole world and forfeitshis soul? Or what would a mangive in return for his soul?”Matthew 16:26.

If you expect unchanginghappiness in a changing worldyou will be greatlydisappointment. Seize theopportunity for every goodpurpose and work to glorify Godnot yourself. No one was sentinto the world to be idle. We areto be successful and blessed so wecan be a blessing to others. Youdon’t have to reach the end ofyour life with a soul that isempty. Jesus is the way, the truthand the life. To loose your lifefor Jesus’ sake simple means tomake knowing Him intimatelyyour priority in life. There is onlyone way to have an intimaterelationship with Jesus and that isto read His word with the intent tolisten, learn and obey. That isGod’s way of revealing Himselfto us through the power of Hisliving words. “So shall My wordbe which goes forth from Mymouth; It shall not return to Meempty, without accomplishingwhat I desire, and withoutsucceeding in the matter forwhich I sent it,” Isaiah 55:11.God’s word is alive and iscompared to rain in the versebefore! “The rain and snow comedown from the heavens and stay

on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer andbread for the hungry,” Isaiah 55:10.It’s through the Bible that God willreveal Himself to you and inhabityour thinking. It’s that realrelationship with God that will overflow into a joy that the world cannotunderstand. He becomes yourstrength and nothing can shake it.The fruit of your relationship withHim produces in every area of yourlife. “But the Holy Spirit producesthis kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

and self-control. There is no lawagainst these things!” Galatians5:22-23. No law can come againstthe fruit the spirit cultivates in youbecause it comes from the HolySpirit. As you set aside your self-interest, the life you will gain in itsplace glorifies God now and foreternity. That is the only way togain true fulfillment.

“In that day you will know that Iam in My Father, and you are inMe, and I am in you,” John 14:20.If you don’t have a Bible pleasecontact me [email protected] and I willprovide you with one.

Learn about antiques and collectibleswith Dr. Georgia Caraway

Reproductions abound today andare becoming better and better. Weshould all develop our senses(including that old standbycommon sense or “gut feel”) tosleuth out problems with antiques. If we learn to read what our piecesare telling us, we can soon knowwhere to look and how to interpretwhere, how, and approximatelywhen it was made; also whatrepairs or alterations have takenplace.

Look for age indicators: naturalwear on upper front edges ofstretchers on tables and chairs, sawcuts or plane marks on theunderside of table tops and drawersides and bottoms, off-centeredscrew heads, mushroom- orrosebud- headed nails and woodenpegs, wood shrinkage across thegrain, dovetails held togetherwithout glue, only one or twodovetails in a drawer, unevendovetails, soft edges where a handor foot may have rested, weararound drawer pulls, a smell like anattic on a rainy day, the bottoms ofall drawers will be the same colorexcept for the bottom one that hasbeen exposed to air, andhandplaned drawer bottoms willbulge in the middle.

Study books that define the typesof hardware used during differentperiods. Also different wood wasused during certain periods. For

instance, mahogany was notcommonly used in Americanfurniture until 1750; pine, poplar, and walnut were popular earlywoods with golden oak being apopular wood in the 1920s.

Look for alteration hints: holeswhere feet once stood, arms cut offchairs, rockers cut off feet orrockers added, plywood (it didn’tcome into use until 1900), colortone differences where new woodhasn’t been oxidized, top-heaviness (the feet have beenremoved or changed), holes indrawers of previous hardware, oldpaint under the seat and around thelegs, the smell of new wood, andwormholes that go straight in havebeen drilled (faked).

These are just a few of the waysthat antiques speak to us. If wewill just learn to listen.

Texas History Minute:

The 1950s and 1960s introducedAmericans to television and rivetedaudiences with tales of the frontier. One of the most noted actors of theera was Texan Fess Parker. Hebecame one of the most popularactors of the time, giving life tolegendary American figures such asDavy Crockett and Daniel Boone inhis portrayals.

Fess Elisha Parker, Jr., was born inFort Worth in 1924. At a youngage, his family moved to a farmoutside San Angelo where he grewup. His childhood was largelyuneventful, but this soon changed. When World War II erupted, heenlisted in the navy. He was tootall to become a pilot as he hadhoped, and he eventually served asa radio operator in the Marines. After his discharge from theservice, he enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene in1946 through the G. I. Bill. Hisinterest in acting developed, and heappeared in a number of studentplays. The next year, hetransferred to the University ofTexas where he majored in history. He earned a history degree fromUT in 1950 and transferred to theUniversity of Southern Californiain Los Angeles to study theaterhistory. He quickly found work asan actor, albeit a small role. Inwhat became his first film role, hehad an uncredited appearance in theclassic 1950 comedy Harvey as alimousine driver.

Parker appeared in various studentplays at USC while working on hisoutside acting career. He wouldultimately appear in 40 films andtelevision shows. He appeared inseveral westerns and televisionshows in the early 1950s. One

movie included a role in thescience-fiction film Them!(1954) about a race of mutated,Texas-sized ants.

In 1954, the Walt DisneyCompany offered him a filmcontract and signed him to playthe legendary Texas hero DavyCrockett in a series of one-hourtelevised features. He appearedin all seven episodes between1954 and 1956, forever makingParker and Crockett synonymouswith the coonskin cap. Just astelevision was capturing theimagination of Americanviewers, Fess Parker became ahero to countless children andfamilies across the nation.

In 1957, he appeared in anotherDisney classic, Old Yeller, portraying the father of a youngboy who found and befriended ayellow dog. Frustrated that theroles that Disney offered were allvariations on a theme, Parker leftin 1958 to find other roles. Hefound work in several movies, including westerns such as TheHangman (1959) and war moviessuch as Hell is for Heroes(1962). In 1962, he also starredin a short-lived series Mr. SmithGoes to Washington, a televisionversion of the classic 1939 film.

Shortly afterward, he won therole of another legendary frontierfigure, this time playing famedKentucky frontiersman DanielBoone. The show lasted for sixyears on NBC. After DanielBoone left the air in 1970, Parkerhad only two more screenappearances.

In spite of the many fans he hadafter his iconic roles playingDavy Crockett and DanielBoone, Parker grew frustratedwith the few parts he wasotherwise offered. After 1974,he largely retired from acting. He began a successful wineryoperation in California. Hiswines are known for having acoonskin cap on the labels, andhis family still operates thecompany today.

Parker died quietly at his homein California in 2010, leavingbehind his wife of 50 years, twochildren, and a generation offans.
